Considering purchase of an LCD monitor

I'm looking for LCD monitor recommendations, as my CRT is starting to get very blurry. Requirements:

1600x1200 minimum (widescreen okay as long as vertical resolution is 1200). Don't really care what size it is.
Budget: <500$
Used mostly for coding/some gaming/electronics CAD, although I might want to hook in a TV tuner into my desktop at some point, so I don't want to have colors looking washed out.


Suggestions anyone?

I don't know for sure, but I highly doubt you'll be able to find a widescreen with a vertical resolution of 1200 or more for anything less than astronomical.

There are plenty of monitors under $500 that have 1200 lines of resolution.

I would imagine there are a number of 24" LCDs with 1920x1200 resolution with <USD$500.

Well, I have a Quicksilver G4 Mac (using OSX 10.3.9) that has a Nvidia GeForce2 MX graphics card. I recently purchased a Samsung 204B LCD monitor It has both VGA and DVI inputs and offers the ability to rotate the screen from landscape to portrait mode.
I can use the DVI input and the rotate feature on my new Mac book (Intel 950 graphics card) (using OS X 10.4.3) but not on the older G4. What source should I consult to find out why my computer does not function with my new LCD monitor?

Ended up getting a 2408WFP for 542$ after tax; considered a Lenovo L220x but settled on the Dell after considering that the lack of 1:1 mapping on the Lenovo might be a problem for some purposes. Heard there were problems w/ lag with the Dell, but I don't think a single frame makes a difference since I'm not a hardcore gamer.

Got it. Very pleased w/ it after getting used to the large size and compensating for oversaturation with compiz; used to sticking my head right up to the monitor and squinting to see. Used compiz on Linux to desaturate everything slightly to compensate for wide-gamut. Portrait mode is nice but probably not going to be used much, since 1200 vertical pixels is plenty. Apparently very lucky that I got it when I did, since the price is back up to 689$ pre-tax.

Good for you. Seems I'm a bit late to the party, but I've had a 24" BenQ G2400 or something like that and it's been excellent. Only cost me 300 euros and these things are more expensive here than in the states.

Need DVI to ADC adapter to hook the screen to Quicksilver using DVI. I'm not sure if rotation is supported. If not, you could find a newer video cord but it may be expensive. You can use some PC AGP cards in a G4 I but the bios most be flashed for Mac (use google).

24" monitors are nice (we have several at work), but I rather like the 22". Its just about the right size and it matches with a 19" standard perfectly. I have my 22" widescreen side by side with a 19" standard and the vertical resolution is almost identical. Makes for a very nice dual screen setup.
