WoW installation question

WoW installation question
This might be an exceedingly stupid question, but I'm not very handy with computers.
I recently purchased World of Warcraft and its expansion, the Burning Crusade. Yesterday I succesfully installed WoW, but upon installing Burning Crusade I encountered a problem: the game informed me that it required a patch to operate, but it failed to retrieve that patch, citing an error of unknown origin. The game suggested re-installing it and so I did. Or at least tried. Now I can't install even the original WoW. At the very end of installation an error occurs, since the installation fails to change file names from .temp. Originally I thought that my COMODO firewall would be behind this, but after disabling it, the error continued to occur (and usually with different file names to boot). I'm trying to see if temporarily disabling SpyBot would do the trick, but I doubt it.
Has anyone else had this problem? And does anyone have any suggestions about it?

Re: WoW installation question
No, I haven't had that problem despite having to reinstall WoW several times over the past couple years. The only suggestion I have is the obvious dumb one - are you sure you're hooked up to the internet when it's trying to download the patch? Failure to ensure that is the only time I've had patch problems.

Re: WoW installation question
My suggestion would be to dig the WoW main site for all the links to directly download the patches themselves.

Re: WoW installation question
Yes, I think that my Internet connection was up back then; however, my connection's failed from time to time, so I'll try it out again after making sure the connection is up.
Currently, however, I can't download any patches, since I can't even finish the WoW installation. I sent E-mail to Blizzard's technical support and hope that they can give some insight as to how to fix this.

Re: WoW installation question
well my system seemed to be able to DL patch 2.4 just fine (I cancelled the DL as I didn't have 6+ hours to spare (it's 1.1 GB))

Re: WoW installation question
For some obscene reason, I can't download this patch through the usual bit torrent utility. My connection looks good, so I'm not sure what is going on.Azazal wrote:What will really make you mad, the get ready for Lich King patch should out on the 14th, so there will be a few more gigs for you, the latest but not yeah implemented portion of the patch was something like 900 megs

Re: WoW installation question
OK, my friend found something on the troubleshooter that might be helpful (not sure, though, I'll have to wait until I get back home).
1) I must ensure that I am logged in as administrator.
2) I should right-click on WoW's and TBC's setup.exe, go to Settings and ensure that both have "Run as Administrator".
3) I should reboot the computer after giving administrator priviledges to both setups.
4) I should go to Control Panel, File Settings and there Show > Show Hidden Files.
5) I should copy all CDs on the harddrive in order to speed up the installation if I have to try multiple times.
I hope that works (even though my computer skills are dismal). I'd hate to have bought the game and upgraded my account from trial to full account just to create a new account and buy a new set of game.

Re: WoW installation question
well if it's just a problem with the disks, you should be able to install it from a friends disks (a member in the guild I'm in share's his disks with his sister) and btw if you happen to end up on Draenor realm once you get in, I can give a hand if I'm not too busy (just send an in-game mail to either Sampol (alliance) or Bloodleaf (horde))Tiriol wrote:OK, my friend found something on the troubleshooter that might be helpful (not sure, though, I'll have to wait until I get back home).

Re: WoW installation question
Right now I don't know whether the disk is at fault, some faulty program (my firewall was a pain in the ass when I installed the trial version, so it wouldn't surprise me much) or if some already existing file from the previous installment stops the game from changing the .temp file names or something.Lord Revan wrote:well if it's just a problem with the disks, you should be able to install it from a friends disks (a member in the guild I'm in share's his disks with his sister) and btw if you happen to end up on Draenor realm once you get in, I can give a hand if I'm not too busy (just send an in-game mail to either Sampol (alliance) or Bloodleaf (horde))
I'll look up those names (so far I've played a Forsaken warlock in trial version, so it'd probably be Bloodleaf) once and if I get everything working. I dread the idea that the failed Burning Crusade installment would have something to do with this.

Re: WoW installation question
OK, I had to re-boot my computer and retrieve the settings from few days ago, but the game installed then. Furthermore, it WAS my firewall that had kept messing about with the patch updates: the bastard freezed the game whenever it tried to download new patches. Now I have all the patches, my account is updated and I can play (on Saturday - I have both school and work on Friday and I get home after midnight, bloody stupid work shift extension...).
Thank you all for your suggestions and help!
