Ebook readers?

Post by His Divine Shadow »

I tend to read alot of ebooks, currently I use an old IBM laptop thats dying, the harddrive is going and it's finicky but it runs microsoft reader and works as a huge clumsy book.

I've been looking for a replacement but I am not sure what I should get, there seems to be dedicated Ebook readers out there with nifty new screen technology that draws no power except when chaning the page and it looks like real text on paper even. They are too expensive however for me.

I've been thinking maybe some old used PDA of some kind? I read mainly .lit files so that'd be a requirement for any such device. PDF files comes in second.

Any tips?

Any old PDA will do as long as it can run Windows Mobile. Ebooks require absolutely no resources whatsoever, and MS's reader is perfectly functional.

I can't point you at anything specifically, at the moment, but Pocket PC/Windows Mobile PDAs, or even smart phones running windows mobile, should suit your needs. You could probably find one cheap enough used or refurbished, I imagine.

Yeah, there are many older model PDAs/Pocket PCs that run Mobile. Amazon's Kindle is supposed to be pretty sweet too, but I have a PPC myself so I can have other functionality than just reading books. You should try checking out Ebay, there are a lot of PDAs there and you can get a feel for prices.

When my Handspring Visor died I went with a Palm LifeDrive. It came with Docs to Go Pro, which can read/write Word, Excel & PowerPoint, plays MP3s, videos, displays images, etc. etc. It also has an Acrobat translator.

If you like WinCE, you'll find a lot of new stuff. My PDA's old but works great. It has Palm OS, which I prefer.
