Famous IG regiments from nice worlds?
Ok. We know that a good number of Imperium worlds are actually quite civilised, nice planets, with perhaps some resistance from bandits or rebels against the local Imperial governor. Nothing biggie. We also know that due to the large numbers of Commissioners required, a goodly number of them also hailed from such civilised worlds who are naturally Emperor Fearing, loyal, well trained citizens...... Ditto to whether these guys are actually better than those from orphanages.
Yet, it appears that virtually every famous IG regiment comes from either a Deathworld, feral world,Hive, medieval, or even agriworld.
So, is there ANY famous IG regiments from such civilised worlds?

Well, Tanith was a pretty nice, decent, civilized world, and they produced the Ghosts.

Wouldn't all so-called civilized worlds fall into the latter three categories (plus forge worlds)? Serious question. It's my understanding that anything less is an immature colony.PainRack wrote:Yet, it appears that virtually every famous IG regiment comes from either a Deathworld, feral world,Hive, medieval, or even agriworld.

I remember reading that Macragge is fairly nice for a world, and it produces Imperial Guard Regiments. One of them was transiting in the 3rd book in the Ultramarine Omnibus.

Tanith came to mind for me as well...you don't get much more peaceful and non-hellworldly than a planet forming its first-ever IG regiment in its history. Shame about the orbital bombardment.

Well, doesn't Ultramar have "IG" of a sort? They wear blue too...

I think the Valhallans would count. Aside from being hellishly cold and with occasional Ork attacks, the place seems very decent and wholesome.
Certainly, the Valhallans seem to be a bunch of pretty sane people, if Cain's accounts are to be believed.

Re: Famous IG regiments from nice worlds?
Agriworlds tend to have miniscule populations. Small population -> small PDF -> even smaller Imperial Guard contribution.
Cadia would be 'nice', were it not right next to the Eye of Terra. Valhalla and Tallarn have extreme environments, but I think the population live pretty decent lives in their enclosed settlements. Attila was never described as a hellhole either (medieval world, IIRC).

Re: Famous IG regiments from nice worlds?
While there's very little background on the Harakoni:
"Harakon is a low gravity world with towering hives whose spires reach into the upper atmosphere. The Harakoni use grav-gliders to hunt Vapourwyrms in the mountain passes below, making them fearless of altitude and expert at judging air currents. These skills are put to good use by the Imperial Guard and many Warmasters owe their laurels to the courage of the Harakoni Warhawks."
Seems quite pleasant, by Imperial standards. Note the presumably civillian access to suspensor technologies. They're also equipped with carapace armour, which implies a high level of technology, and thus a higher standard of living.
The other drop trooper regiment, we know more about. The Elysian Drop Troops, beyond being some of the most competant guard, also come from a very civilised sounding planet. Elysians - again, they seem to have a lot of carapace armour and high tech equipment due to being a trade hub.

There's also Amberley's hovercar in one of the Ciaphas Cain novels. While she's an Inquisitor, it was a civilian model she was driving (albiet with some modifications).NecronLord wrote:Note the presumably civillian access to suspensor technologies.

The Vitrians supposedly hail from a beautiful and stable world/society, as I recall. "Vitrian glass" shows up time and again in Dan Abnett's work.

There are also the Gudrunite Rifles, Gudrun being quite nice to live on, save for the occasional Chaos problems; or the Agri-World from where they raised the regiment in 15 Hours, which might as well be in Middle America (and in fact IS, since 15 Hours is essentially a WWI/Vietnam novel)

There's the Vostroyan Firstborn, though I think they might come from a Forge World of sorts.

The planet which creates the only IG aircraft units also has drop troopers the "Skyborn".NecronLord wrote: The other drop trooper regiment, we know more about. The Jant Normandus, the home world of the Jantine Patricians, seems like a perfectly decent place.

Ryza's famous for its armored regiments, and its a Paradise World (thanks ST). The Hyrkans and Belladons are also from places that don't follow the "Hell World=Awesome troops" brainbug...
Many thanks! These darned computers always screw me up. I calculated my first death-toll using a hand-cranked adding machine (we actually calculated the average mortality in each city block individually). Ah, those were the days.

Note that this is also taking place on a planet where hovercars are a very common mode of transport, on a relatively backwater - if prosperous - planet.andrewgpaul wrote:There's also Amberley's hovercar in one of the Ciaphas Cain novels. Sorry about that...... My google Chinese programme has been kicking in at odd times, and I usually have to turn it off mid post and rewrite entire paragraphs. I would had loved to involve Tanith, if it wasn't for the fact that after her first tithe, she essentially blew up:D
As for the Elysian, isn't their homeworld supposed to be arid and life in the countryside hard?
And on the other topic, are any of the regiments famous in the IG? I only recognise the drop-troopers.

They do. If I'm remembering correctly, family members have a role in equiping those tithed to the Guard by donating labor to manufacture their equipment.Ford Prefect wrote:There's the Vostroyan Firstborn, though I think they might come from a Forge World of sorts.
Re: Famous IG regiments from nice worlds?
Not just Tyranids, Periremunda features loose threads from Perlia that get tied up as well. We get to see inter-Ordos conflict and the toys Amberly has at her disposal, ranging from power-armor and a heavily armed and armored but well disguised luxury aircar to a private starship and orbital bombardment.Peptuck wrote:Nope.
