Weekend of Slime on FOX

Post by Stravo »

I may be in a little late on this but if anyone watched FOX this weekend there can be no doubt that FOX has become nothing more than the propaganda arm of the McCain campaign. Hour after hour on Obama and his friends. Before it was "Obama is a sleeper agent for the Muslims." with that thoroughly debunked it's now "Obama is a sleeper Communist" I mean, really, is that the best they can come up with? Oh it didn't end there though. There were even insinuations of race war. Oh yes. They replayed several clips of Rev. Wright when he was proclaiming that someone would be coming to right all the racial injustices. No comment. Just the clip.

And as far as I can tell Oberman seems to be the only one in the media who has pounced on this. No other media outlet that I watched even made remote references to this weekend. It was blatant, it was horrible, it was near criminal in the outright slander of insinuation going on in particular with Sean Hannity. We can bitch about the media all we want and Fox in particular but when no one stands up from their own ranks to point the finger of wrongdoing at their own then really what sort of respect should we give to the media. This weekend may have proven that Fox is an atrocity of a news network and has given up the ghost at the "Fair and Balanced" masquerade but the other media outlets are also muddied by remaining silent on this coverage.

I beg to differ. Certainly Fox News has been full of blatant partisanship, that hasn't been news for years. It's standards are partisan and it's reporting slipshod. There really isn't much more to say and it's absurd to suggest that people should drop the other issues to cover it. What would a bunch more outrage, particular of the typical preach to the choir style of cable news op-ed men, actually do? The reason only Keith Olberman said anything was he's pretty much the only one contractually obligated to be deeply offended.

Another factor is that Fox News is the ratings leader in cable news but it's average numbers are dwarfed ten times over for any one of the big three's nightly newscasts. Combined it's outnumbered twenty five times over. And that doesn't count the morning news programs which also get massive numbers.

Fox News really doesn't matter except for comedy value.

Greenwald notes:
For the third debate in a row, actual polling data last night (as well as uncommitted focus groups) revealed that most Americans believe that the Democratic candidate (Obama/Biden) won decisively. In stark contrast, this is what the poll of Fox News viewers found:

In the real world among Americans, Obama won the debate by 15-30 points, but in Fox News World, McCain won the debate by 86-12%. That’s what Fox News is and who their viewers are: a right-wing propaganda outlet with an almost entirely unpersuadable viewership.

That's really not too surprising. I was on the bus the other day listening to some old guy talking to the driver about the elections, and he was spouting all of McSame's talking points. I actually had to stifle laughing when he said he only watched Fox News. The guy in question was in his 50s-60s easily.
