Windows rot?
Moderator: Edi
No Windows rot on my computer, then again I'm damn careful about what I install on it. I have a minimal amount of programs installed on it so it's pretty fast and stable. Win 98 loads up faster on my ancient Pentium 133 than Win2K Pro does on my school's maxed out Pentium 4's. Load speed of Java heavy pages is slower on computer though, but my Pentium 2 400 is evens it up and then some. Did I mention that my computers almost never crash? I've got the darn things tuned to a T!

You shouldn't have to be so fucking careful. Whatever happened to simply using a computer, rather than treating it like a puppy?aerius wrote:No Windows rot on my computer, then again I'm damn careful about what I install on it. The gift of Superman is the same in his universe as ours. It's not about his powers, his costume, his persona, it's about the using the gifts he has to help people. We all have gifts too, maybe we can't leap tall buildings in a single bound, but maybe we're good with math, maybe we're charming. We can use our gifts -whatever they are- to help people. We just need to make that choice. And Superman shows us that it's possible.

I use Win2K SP-IDon'tKnowOrCare and it hasn't given me any problem. Although it was fun watching the thing start connecting to the Internet the moment the Cat5 touched my ethernet card. I keep it pretty clean, although I haven't defragged in a while. Had to reinstall a few months ago from a spyware uninstall gone horribly wrong (Fuck you Xupiter! And your little WildTangent dog too!!!), but it's been great ever since. The asshat who installed xupiter and WT has since been kicked out of my home and beaten to a nanometer of his shitty life. That said, All Is Right In Valhalla!
<EDIT> System Specs: P2 400MHz with a 10GB Boot HDD and a 60GB MP3/Warez/Porn HDD (Hey at least I'm not shitting you! ), 192 MB RAM, CDRW Drive (for "backing up" my Win2K disk 40 times), GeForce2 MX (don't laugh, I get a steady 60FPS with it in Quake 3), with Cable Internet (for sucking MP3s/warez/porn off Kazaa fast enough to make your head spin, and getting those really l33t pings in Quake, just dont try both at once!!!).
<EDIT2> Forgot about my nice red Logitech Laser Maus (don't install the drivers, you won't need 'em) and fixing a motherfucking piece-of-shit typo! I h8 typos!

I do just use my computer, but at the same time I make sure that it's not clogged up with a bunch of shit that I'll never use. Keep it clean (except for the gigs of porn) and simple and it works pretty well.ReinnResauq wrote:You shouldn't have to be so fucking careful. ME user here. A friend of mine uses XP and experiences all sorts of crashes and memory problems.Tsyroc wrote:McNum wrote:I'm an ME user, too. Somehow I manage to keep it going... It's a tricky Windows to keep stable. However, IF you finally get it stable it's one of the better versions of Windows.
My ME box here gets a reformat once every 1.5 to 2 years. Did so wth every PC I had. Really helps stability.
I'm usine ME as well. I had a problem early on with it but since then I've kept up with the updates and have only had one minor problem that I was able to fix with system restore.
The original problem did something that knocked the resolution so far out of wack that a couple of icons took up most of my screen. Dell tried to tell me it was a virus. Funny, the same thing happened to two other people I know who had ME. Since it's been stable I like ME.
I hardly ever experience such problems.
That'd do it. There'd be no way for it to access much of your hardware then.Crazy_Vasey wrote:Yup I went from a VIA to a SiS chipset and it just wouldn't boot period. Didn't have a chance to do any driver fiddling before the changeover as the reason I had to change was because my old mobo was broken. Utter bastard it was. Lost quite a few files that were inside my documents and couldn't be accessed from other OSes.

Windows happened. My Linux install is as solid as a rock. For playing games and generally screwing around, I use Windows. And yes, I do have to periodically reinstall it because it's all fucked up. Linux, on the other hand ... let's just say that my server runs a version of Mandrake which is three releases behind the current one, it was installed on April 2001, and has never crashed. Ever. The only times it's ever been taken down are for hardware upgrades or physically unplugging and moving the box.ReinnResauq wrote:You shouldn't have to be so fucking careful. I try to keep my computer clean of the stuff I don't use...the problem is that every uninstall leaves a good 100 MB of stuff I don't need. If I can see that that's the problem, I have to go through the task of making sure one of those files isn't dreadfully important. With Windows, it only takes one file in the wrong place to cause the entire system to fail, even if that file is one from a game that was uninstalled two years ago and has no purpose now.aerius wrote:I do just use my computer, but at the same time I make sure that it's not clogged up with a bunch of shit that I'll never use. Another thing I'm sick of with Microsoft is beta testing its software. I don't want to do it. Microsoft consistantly releases buggy stuff and then rolls in money as the consumers, paying upwards of $200 for the privilege, fight with shit software and find all the bugs. What's worse, their second edition stuff doesn't fix all of them! [/i]

That sounds like a hardware problem. 98 was never that temperamental with me, nor even with the computers at the high school, where they get terribly abused. You might download a program called 'memtest' to see if your RAM is good. Or run some other diagnostics. Or check your temperatures; maybe your computer is overheating?ReinnResauq wrote:Days? Days on Windows 98? Hah, I get minutes, a couple of hours if I'm lucky. In fact, about every 6 hours or so, I get a total 'Oh Shit' crash where *every single program* running fails for no reason at all. In fact, 98 totally corrupts every year sometime around April or December. This is compounded with the fact that I have msn internet service, too, which makes things far worse.
And yes, it took a long time for people to find out about that bug because few had ever had an uptime with 98 of so many days (I want to say 63 but I don't think that's it).
I've got no Windows rot on my Win98 machine, but then again I'm also careful about what I put there, and I use Norton Systemworks on it and have deleted IE completely. After that and a periodical application of the Norton tools, it's pretty solid, but it should have been solid in the first place.

My Windows 98 hasn'tcrashed ever since I got rid of AIM and started using Opera and I've had the same machine for probably 4 years.

The only time I got my XP killed is when I had too many apps running, and the system ran out of memory, both virtual and physical. It simply stopped
On the other hand, I have already killed multiple Linux installations, too. Windows systems generally like me, but with Linux, it is mutual hatred

I use 98se for my main box. I have been able to keep it running for a week to two weeks straight before it crashes. And I shit you not on that.
As for the crash causing sysmptoms, just whatch what you install, clear out the cache and the registry once in a while. And install all the service packs. You can keep it running and stable, just takes a little time...

Quick way to nuke OSes
ROT13 encoded to protect the idiots
Jvaqbjf- sbezng p: /nhgbgrfg
Yvahk- ybtva nf ebbg, ez -es /
ZnpBFK- ebbg, ez -es / (V guvax, arire hfrq Znp)
Eh and I've killed linux several times too, by tinkering too much, like trying to run strip on system libraries to save space on a 1GB HD, rebooting improperly when using ext2fs, installing converted RPMs. Of course I use root frequently (bad idea) .

No I stripped all of the symbols, not only the debugging ones. These had debugging symbols since they were compiled with a blind ./configure;make;make install. (yes kinda dumb). It did'nt exactly nuke the system, but some there were some problems, like running make menuconfig for kernel recompile. I think you need the symbols for linking with libraries. Shrug. I'm a newb, don't really know.

Don't forget the wonderful tendency of Windows to have memory leaks. Even if you run an NT server for just file/print, eventually you'll run out of available memory and the stupid server willl crash. It sucks...

Or the tendency for anything older than Win2K to get said memory leaks in its system resources area (spot in RAM where the cute interface graphics are stored). Worse, you can stuff a gigabyte of the world's fastest DDR RAM into your computer, and fucking Windows won't increase the size (64KB) of the system resources. Windows and memory leaks in system resources may as well make their marriage official. If it don't get RAM leaks in the resources, it ain't Windows.
