Frac Ture

Post by Chardok »

Let's see, on a scale of 1-10 I give it a *yawwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwn*. First, there's the silly backstory. "How could it come to this? How could it not?" Really? How could it not? How could it not come to

"ZOMG THE POLAR ICECAPZ ARE MELTING SO AMERICA USES TERRAIN DEFORMATION TO PROTECT THE COASTS EXCEPT THE MISSISSIPPI RIVER DELTA AND THE COUNTRY GETS CUT IN HALF BY THE OCEAN AND HALF OF THE PEOPLE WANT TO BE MUTANTS AND HALF WANT TO BE ROBOTS SO THEY GO TO WAR RAR!"

It's the 3rd most ridiculous thing ever. So, you heard me, half of the country want to use genetic modification to cope with the changing weather/climate (They're called Pacificans now, BTW) and half want to use cybernetic enhancements. So the prez passes a law banning DNA modification and TEH EVOLMUTANT DUEDZ say "F* U, PREZ" and secede. Now war.

question 1: Why does that make the genetic dudes evil?
Question 2: Why are the cyber-dudes Good?

MESSAGE?! Maybe.

Oh, yeah, gameplay. Ever play any third person shooter ever made? Oh, okay, so you know exactly how this game plays. There's nothing revolutionary about terrain deformation, either. It doesn't really add a dynamic, doesn't intrinsically change the game for the better/worse it's just kinda...there. it's not really even fun to just mess around with it - EVER. I mean, TFU had horrible gameplay, but at least it was semi-fun to toss people around and off of ledges, and into pits and walls and crap. this is just...."Wow, I made a hill." "Wow, I made a hole." spiffy. Then there's the retarded weapons. HOW ABOUT A GRENADE LAUNCHER THAT TUNNELS UNDERGROUND SO YOU CANT SEE WHERE THE GRENADE IS AND YOU HAVE TO GUESS WHERE TO SPLODE IT AND IT HAS TO BE NO MORE THAN 3 INCHES FROM AN ENEMY BECAUSE OF THE PATHETIC KILL RADIUS!!!1!1

Awesome, right? Want more? Okay.

How about a machine gun that has a 30 round-per-minute rate of fire?!

Sorry, all-in-all a 4/10 humdrum dialogue, stupid story, and forgettable gameplay. ZOMG TERRAIN DEFORMATION makes up for nothing - just like I thought it would.

Damn you Stark - your hatred for everything is contagious.

Tech Demo!

It's not that the hate is contagious--it's that the everything is, and we hate it. This sounds like a gimmick game from front to back, and those are only as fun as their gimmick. Sadly, this gimmick has been around ever since those tank games where you tried to make the other guy fall off the screen by blasting holes in terrain. I can definately see the allure of a terrain deformation shooter, but it from what I've seen and heard, the deformation tools are just part of the way you get around and not really all that intergral to the overall gameplay. It's kinda like removing all the stairs from a game and creating a gun that lets you create stairs. Rippling the battlefield is kinda cool, but I can imagine it's coolness wears off fast. I would have rather them work on the cratering effect and let you have rockets and grenades that would dig out the terrain and fling rock debris all over--and then instead of platforming puzzles it would be terrain destruction puzzles. It'd also be nice if the stationary structures, like the buildings, were actually built out of deformable chunks, like the blocks and barrels and stuff, so you could tear them apart with your tools and weapons.

And what the hell happened to most of Canada? Isn't Canada at higher sea level than most of North America? I mean somehow the sea overwhelms the entire shield, floods out the most populous parts of the country and only Nova Scotia is left? Is Nova Scotia now a state?

Why don't the cyborgs and mutants just work together? Wouldn't genetically transmogrified cybermen be better than just mutants or cyborgs on their own? :?

Presumably that would be like pirates and ninjas working together. An offence unto the lawd.

The game has looked like hilariously lame shit ever since it was announced. Oh look, you can move the terrain mapping up and down using the "skew" function now built into the game as a weapon. While they're at it, why don't they make a game around the 'boolean' operator in 3DS Max or some shit?

I played the demo and sure enough it confirmed my beliefs. I thought it was pretty hilarious that the game's only real use for the terrain skewing was reaching ledges. Sorry, but single gimmick acts are always doomed to failure.
Best care anywhere.
