Stephane Dion Plaigiarising? (blog)

Dion’s Plagiarism Uncovered?
October 6, 2008 by The Trusty Tory

We all know how much I love pointing out the blatant hypocrisy of the Liberal Party, especially when it comes to allegations lobbed at the Prime Minister.

Well, in continuing with Stephen Taylor’s onslaught, a loyal reader of mine, paulsstuff, has done some digging of his own.

It would appear as though over a quarter of Stephane Dion’s speech at the United Nations Climate Change Conference in 2005 was plagiarized directly from a 2004 speech given to the U.S. Senate committee chaired by none other than…..John McCain. That’s right, folks, Dion has ripped off Dr. Robert Corell, a a Senior Policy Fellow with the Atmospheric Policy Program of the American Meteorological Society, in order to look like a competent Minister of the Environment.

Take a look, from random points throughout Dion’s speech and the article.

Stephane Dion’s speech:

…Increasing global concentrations of carbon dioxide and other greenhouse gases due to human activities, primarily fossil fuel burning, are projected to contribute to additional arctic warming of about 4-7 degrees over the next hundred Years.

Increasing precipitation, shorter and warmer winters, and substantial decreases in snow cover and ice cover are among the projected changes that are very likely to persist for centuries.

Arctic vegetation zones are very likely to shift, causing wide-ranging impacts.

…Animals species’ diversity, ranges and distribution will change.

Reductions in sea ice will drastically shrink marine habitat for polar bears, ice-inhabiting seals, and some seabirds, pushing some species towards extinction.

…Melting of highly reflective arctic snow and ice reveals darker land and ocean surfaces, increasing absorption of the sun’s heat and further warming the planet.

Increases in glacial melt and river runoff add more freshwater to the ocean, raising global sea level and possibly slowing the ocean circulation that brings heat from the tropics to the poles, affecting global and regional climate.”

Now the speech delivered to the United States Senate, chaired by John McCain:

…Increasing global concentrations of carbon dioxide and other greenhouse gases due to human activities, primarily fossil fuel burning, are projected to contribute to additional arctic warming of about 4-7 degrees over the next hundred Years

…Increases in glacial melt and river runoff add more freshwater to the ocean, raising global sea level and possibly slowing the ocean circulation that brings heat from the tropics to the poles, affecting global and regional climate.”

…Melting of highly reflective arctic snow and ice reveals darker land and ocean surfaces, increasing absorption of the sun’s heat and further warming the planet.”

…Increasing precipitation, shorter and warmer winters, and substantial decreases in snow cover and ice cover are among the projected changes that are very likely to persist for centuries.

…Arctic vegetation zones are very likely to shift, causing wide-ranging impacts.

…Animals species’ diversity, ranges and distribution will change.

…Reductions in sea ice will drastically shrink marine habitat for polar bears, ice-inhabiting seals, and some seabirds, pushing some species towards extinction.

That’s all I could be bothered to hunt down, but there’s more in there.

So, as psychologists say, it’s normally the “accuser that’s the offender”. Does this mean that Stephane Dion will call for himself to be “expelled?”

Or was he simply an incompetent Minister, unable to write speeches for himself?

We’re waiting.

And I'm an idiot who spelled plagiarizing incorrectly, in the thread title no less. Someone please fix?

Only 25% is a lot better than Stephen Harpers speech that was a literal word for word copy of John Howard?

It looks to me like they're both reading from the same facts sheet; if they had more than a list of facts that were being read off it might be convincing. As it is it seems a bit of a stretch to be plagiarism of McCain, although maybe plagiarism of whatever scientific paper published the facts in question.

McCain only chaired the committee, the speech was delivered by an actual scientist sort:

A quick check on Wikipedia reveals Stephane Dion was born in Quebec, i.e., the part of Canada whose residents like to pretend they live in France instead of a Dominion of the British Empire.

Insert appropriate Francophobic joke here.
Please do not make Americans fight giant monsters.

Those gun nuts do not understand the meaning of "overkill," and will simply use weapon after weapon of mass destruction (WMD) until the monster is dead, or until they run out of weapons.

They have more WMD than there are monsters for us to fight. (More insanity here.)

Was there any point to this post other than to prove your total ignorance about Canada?

I dislike French-bashing in general, but I especially dislike it when it's directed at the francophone population of Canada. Yeah, there's a few old-timers who want to separate, but Alberta is full of those fuckers too. And in case you forgot, A: No part of Canada has ever seceded from Confederation, and B: Canada has the largest population of French people who have never surrendered to Germany.

Fuck you Sidewinder.

On topic: I think he's just repeating a sheet of facts, which isn't completely damning. Might need to dig a little harder there, buddy.

In my anger and haste, I fucked up. Alberta is not "full of" separatists, I meant to say that we have our share as well. Also, I was implying that we might have separatists in Quebec, but we've never had a province secede from Confederation, unlike our neighbours to the south.

Sorry for the Ghetto Edit.

Most of the separatists are Americans who moved north, or those who want to be Americans.

I'm just waiting for the oil to run out, when Alberta has no money, and the province runs out of water from the glaciers that are dissappearing.

Typical shit from a Torontonian. Fucking Easterners.

Honestly, I wonder about that. The majority of the separatist supporters are just retarded rednecks, but I wonder about the ringleaders of that circus. Something just makes me think, CIA Plant. The US has a history of interfering in countries with sizable oil reserves, and Alberta would be a pretty sweet catch for them.Huge oil reserves would make an independent Alberta a prime target in the future. Anyone who thinks the US would leave us alone because "they need us" (actual quote from a separatist supporter) is a fucking retard.

Albertans are just wannabe Texans.
With lost of Newfies thrown in for good measure.

How large is the separatist group out there, anyway?

It's strange, there aren't very many in the actual Western Block Party (which I mistook for a party promoter at first, whoops!). There are a lot of sympathizers among the more conservative members of the PC party here. Being the only party in power for so long has attracted a lot of Liberals to their banner, since that's the only way to get shit done here. So all these dudes are crying about "Red Tories" and saying this shit about separating. I think it's more common among the older crowd that was around when NEP was put in place by Trudeau, and feel that anything the Feds do is to our detriment (this is why Dion is gonna get raped in Alberta especially, even though the NDP might even pick up seats here). Mostly a bunch of farmers and related ignorant fools.

Despite the fact that I'm fairly liberal and voting that way this election, I'm kind of hoping that we get another minority conservative government just so that Dion will get thrown out on his ass and the conservatives start wondering if maybe Harper isn't going to get them anyone quickly. We really need a new batch of party leaders as the current crop have characteristics ranging from 'wooden' to 'lunatic' on the personality scale and 'despicable but hold your nose' and 'somewhat deluded and never getting in' on the electibility scale, we need some more interesting and exciting choices.

One thing you've got to give to Chretien, at least he had a 'personality', something I don't think any of the leaders really have right now.

Also, the Albertan Seperatists are all self-delusional nutcases who wish they were Texas. The rest of us wish they would go away and not take our province with them. Fortunately they are much, much rarer than the Quebecois Seperatists who are fortunately slowly dying away.

I'm going to have to second Acadamia Nut here, I really hope we end up with a minority Conservative gov't. Stephane Dion is not cut out to be a Prime Minister, despite what his mother may have told him. We really need a strong Liberal leader. We have the same situation at the provincial level here, and after March's election, which was almost a sweep for the PCs, Kevin Taft has to step down (finally! I hate that fucker). Hopefully Dion gets the boot, and we see someone intelligent replace him.

The question is, who? Michael Ignatieff is going to have to deal with his extended absence from Canada, and the fact he's a highly educated fellow. I mean, yeah, most politicians have some education, but this guy went on and on about it. Unfortunately, people don't like the guys in ivory towers. Anti-elitism isn't as strong in Canada as it is in the US, but nobody likes a show-off. I don't really know of any other potential replacements (I am more involved provincially).

What I don't get is why people hate Dion. He's a very intelligent guy who only comes across as weak because he CANNOT LIE to save his life. Harper does nothing but lie, yet people like him.

And this latest bullshit pulled by CTV for the Tories. The interviewer needs to retake elementary English again.

Dion needs better English or a better personality. Outside of Quebec, it's hard to understand the guy. Look at Harper: no personality, really, but he's got good English.
