Since the top part of this article is being covered in the troopergate thread, I'm posting the second half.
McCain meanwhile took to the campaign trail in Iowa, for the first time after he had to step in at a town hall meeting in Minnesota Friday, when one woman said Obama was an "Arab" and a man said he was "scared" of the Democrat.
Critics say the seething anger seen at McCain rallies, with shouts of "treason" and "kill him" heard from some crowds, has been whipped up by campaign ads which have accused the Democrat of associating with terrorists.
"He's a decent family man (and) citizen that I just happen to have disagreements with on fundamental issues and that's what this campaign's all about," McCain said at the town-hall meeting in Lakeville, Minnesota.
McCain told the man who said he was "scared" to bring his new baby into an America ruled by Obama that the Democrat was a "decent person and a person that you do not have to be scared of as president of the United States."
McCain's comments drew boos from some of his supporters and appeared to directly undercut the thrust of his aggressive negative ad campaign which has question whether Obama has a character befitting a president.
The campaign has accused Obama of not telling the truth about what he insists is a passing acquaintance with William Ayers, a 1960s radical who is now a college professor.
Palin, who has been cast in the role of attack dog by the campaign, did not repeat her criticisms of Obama over Ayers during an appearance in Pennsylvania on Saturday.
Obama meanwhile acknowledged McCain's attempt to cool things down, but charged his rival with running a negative campaign to try to distract voters from the number one issue -- the tumbling US economy.
"Now, I want to acknowledge that Senator McCain tried to tone down the rhetoric yesterday in his town hall meeting and I appreciate his reminder that we can disagree while still being respectful of each other," Obama said.
"I have said it before and I'll say it again -- Senator McCain has served this country with honor and he deserves our thanks for that," Obama said, as McCain's name was greeted with boos at Obama's rallies in Philadelphia.
But McCain's spokesman Tucker Bounds immediately responded: "The tone of this election is not fueling voter outrage, it's that Americans are frustrated" at Obama's "plans to raise taxes during a down economy."
Just 24 days before the election, time appeared to be fast running out for McCain to change the trajectory of a campaign which has seemed to be slipping away ever since the onset of the worst financial crisis since the 1930s.
Obama led McCain 52 percent to 41 percent among registered voters nationwide, according to a new Newsweek survey, which a month ago had the race locked at 46 percent.
As many as 86 percent of voters said they were dissatisfied with the way things were going in the United States, and only 10 percent said they were satisfied -- a grim omen for Republicans.
Don't buy for a minute that McCain actually meant what he said at that rally. He himself probably knows better than to believe that Obama is a Manchurian candidate, but it certainly wouldn't hurt McCain's chances for that meme to spread. The only reason he posited otherwise today was to head off accusations that he was deliberately spreading it himself.

You may be right, but my point was that half of his own supporters would kick his ass for saying something decent instead of joining in with "kill the darky!"
These "people", are the very people who consider the moniker Hussein to be a God given title to all horrible terrorists. Even if McCain meant what he said, his campaign has painted Obama in a different light (I'd say a black one, but...). So he's not doing himself favours when he tries to defend someone he's going out of his way to discredit, or at least, the people who run his campaign trail are.
The yobbos in the crowds are just your average hicks who fear change.

Yes, that's why they say things like "he's an Arab" and "Kill Obama", because their scared of his desire to raise taxes. That's it, all right. Nevermind that the people we're talking about wouldn't even see a tax hike since they are likely poor and clearly stupid. No no, "he's a terrorist" directly translates to "I hate his economic plan". The correlation is undeniable.
How do these people come up with this stuff? The rhetoric is so beyond being compatible with what we saw; it's like saying I hate cake so I'm going to call an exterminator to kill bugs. The stupid, it burns indeed.

Said it once, saying it again.
McCain has, in his absolute stupidity, tapped into something repitilian. And he's so upset it's not dancing to his tune.

Considering how stupid they are, they wouldn't be capable of keeping their word. Not that they'd want to, the hypocrites.

Uh uh, Mr. Bounds, you do NOT get to get away with that bullshit. People aren't set off into paroxysms of murderous rage over a tax-increase plan, which you're lying about in the first place.

It's strange. He must have known - intuitively if not intellectually - that once it had been nurtured, bolstered and finally released, this kind of bigoted insanity would be impossible to control. At best, one may strive to direct it, to ride its back for a while, but to try to civilize it? Good luck putting that genie back into the bottle.

Well, McCain has been around long enough in the game that he knows that actually accusing your opponent of actually being a monster and raising a mob is not what you want to do. That even if you are going to say nasty things about your opponent politically, you don't openly try to claim that he's a terrorist and someone to be destroy, but rather he's a decent man that you really, really strongly disagree with.
Unfortunately, Palin and many Republicans haven't gotten that memo. It seems like alot of people in these crowds WANT to be a mob and go crusadin' for God and Country against the hated Liberals and their dark skinned lizard messiah. Whatever else you want to say about McCain, he's not really that class of Republican if we are to be honest. Unfortunately, he is the type that wants to win enough that he's letting the mob get out their torches and pitchforks and hasn't put a damper on the crazies like the ones who are shouting "Kill Obama!" at rallies. After all, the racist conservative psycho vote is still a vote.

Of course Obama is a Goa'uld. Do you think a mere human mortal could orchestrate an investigatory hatchet job on Sarah Palin several months before anyone outside of Alaska knew who the hell she even was? I'd think is glowing eyes and how he threatened to purge the lawless areas of Pakistan with or without Musharref's permission with legions of Jaffa would have been a dead giveaway.

Luckily, the meme is not spreading - only diehard, mouth breathing far right whackjobs believe that sort of shit, and they're unpersuadable - McCain and Palins negatives have been spiking lately and I think it has a lot to do with their absurd attacks. It's one thing to call John Kerry a French-looking flip flopper - it's a completely different thing to call Obama a socialist/terrorist/Islamofascist.

I can't belive that people would be "afraid" to live in America if Obama is the POTUS of the future. Are they afraid that if the Democrats take the White House then all their tax cuts will go the way of the dodo bird? What drives the voter these days to vote? I don't get it and this is just ridiculous.

Believe it. I just got an e-mail from a long-time friend, an otherwise quite intelligent person, which begins with being taught as a youth to respect flag and country, the law, and self-reliance, repeats just about every Rightard talking point against not only Obama but Bill Clinton (on —guess what— getting blowjobs from the office-girl) and wraps with the fear of living in the future "United Socialist States Of America".
I am, at this moment, debating with myself on whether to respond or not and, if the former, how to shape that response.

Firstly you are wrong - this stuff is directed all the time. Look at Secondly I really doubt he foresaw a backlash like this. This is the kind of stuff Palin is all about. You read the reports of how she got elected Mayor and governor. You've seen the videos of her screeching about god demanding war and gas lines and demons being cast you. Those reports, those church films, these rally films, they freak you all out. Not me. To me this is "Sunday morning in Va beach". This shit is the Dominionist line. It may come in varying degrees depending on what fundy church you go to, but dig deep enough and this is what it is all about. Fear. Fear so strong that it turns into anger. And these "leaders", the Pat Robertses and James Dobsons and Ken Hams and Jack Chicks, they use that fear to direct that anger. And Palin is one of them. McCain figured Palin could whip the Christians into a frezy and cruise into the White House on their backs. It's what Bush did. Here are the two major miscalculations: First, Bush isn't as extreme as Palin. The guy has more savy then she does. Second, Bush was number 1. Palin is number 2. Any ambition Bush had was already tapped out - no where higher to go. Not so for Palin. Even if they win she is second banana until McCain kicks off or steps down. So she does the Christian thing to do and essentially sticks a shiv in the old man's ribs. She's polling negative numbers now, but she's gaining massive support among her fellow nuts. No matter how this comes out, Palin wins here because her national profile and power base is increased. Nation is going to end this more divided, which hamstrings Obama's attempts at leading. Which sets her or another Dominionist up as a power broker to help unite the people and gets them something out of it.

How about if Obama becomes president its the will of the American people. Throw in lines like "well its freedom baby", and "if you don't like it you can move to another country". Examples to suggest are countries which ignore the results of election. How about Zimbabwe.
If he is as intelligent as you say he is, one would hope he understands satire and gets the parody of lines used by right wing tards.

Hey, I googled for that crazy lady with the hair who McCain took the mic from just out of interest, because I know a lot of people who said they thought she had dementia. Yeah... I didn't think so, and it turns out that she's a McCain campaign office staffer. Apparently she's distributing a letter with all this info on it, and has sent out over 400 from the Republican headquarters in Burnsville. It's pretty unreal. The transcript is a little messy, and I have no idea what this site is, but I watched the clip myself so I know they weren't faking it. It was on Camera.
The level of misinformation and disinformation and racism (you'll love the "his father was a muslim, so he's got some muslim in him, so he can't be trusted" section) here is staggering.
Gods, that's like screeching "kill the JOOS!" And to think that these are the people who could be running the country.
