Re: Clone Wars series (SPOILERS)
Good plot premise for the mission. They have to chase it down with a scraped-together task force because the majority of materiel is already dedicated to existing operations and theaters (similar to the attrition/stalemate scenario just prior to the Battle of Coruscant). An interesting "Sink the Bismarck!" feel.

Re: Clone Wars series (SPOILERS)
I would love to be able to get some good clear shots of those turret emplacements for scaling. But I doubt there is anything available with the stuff we need barring the model they used in making it.

Re: Clone Wars series (SPOILERS)
I'm grabbing some screengrabs of the turrets if I can. There are a few good shots, but they look to be VEnator duplicates.
Other few points of itnerest:
1 - the Malevolence had to turn to bring its ion weapon to bear on the Corvette wannabe in around 10-12 seconds. It looked to be making a 50-70 degree turn (hard for me to judge due to angels and such) but that'd be pretty quick for a ship of that size (close to what the Executor can do.)
2 - the Maleovlence was in Hyperdrive and had to plot a course around the "magic nebula" the Y-wings just plowed straight through.. while still in hyperspace. That shows that manuvering in hyperspace is possible.

While the '8, 12, 17' thing was clearly a joke, it actually looks like they were reasonable estimates.Connor MacLeod wrote:which would suggest the ship is nearly 8 km to 14-15 km long.

It's like the F-15E in a way. Take the base model, add different systems, conformal fuel tanks and extra weapons capacity and you can fill a whole new role with the same airframe.Saxtonite wrote: actually those are different types of Y-wings
http://starwars.wikia.com/wiki/BTL-B_Y-wing_starfighter
I see the B-Y's as long-range strike bombers, compared with the more light-attack role of the standard Y. They have more armor to handle attacks against well-defended targets, more room for fuel, and heavier armaments including a fairly effective ball-turret for self defense, and obviously heavier and longer main guns.
Now I wanna modify one of the Fine Molds model kits to one of these.

Re: Clone Wars series (SPOILERS)
Holy crap! For a kid's show this series is pretty bloody on a personal level, not just a fleeting glimpse of a faraway ship exploding, like Plo Koon's ship last week. We actually get to see people screaming in their cockpits just before their fighters blow up. And Matchstick's death was pretty jarring since he was established as a "named hero" character.
Re: Clone Wars series (SPOILERS)
It almost looked to me like someone ejected in that collision. Along with the Y-B's that were disabled by the ion weapon and were likely recovered, the only sure casualties were the 'Loosen up!' crew that crashed into the top of the Malevolence during their attack run.Old Plympto wrote:Holy crap! Re: Clone Wars series (SPOILERS)
That's why the buffoonish Battle Droids piss me off. I don't care what the in-universe explanation is, it's just ridiculous. One element of the show is handled with quite a bit of maturity and seriousness, then the other part, just... grr...Old Plympto wrote:Holy crap! I can tolerate Ahsoka, mildly irritating as she is, but those damn silly droids...
Btw gang, you can catch up with the first two episodes on Cartoon Network's site. Choose "video" at the bottom and then mouse over the slections to find the first 2 episodes. I assume the third will be up soon.
Incidentally, I loathe the Twilight's design. Yuck.
It's interesting that we never saw the upper turret on the Y-wings used in ANH. It seems like they would have been fairly useful in the trench run, perhaps controlled by the onboard astromech.Darwin wrote:It's like the F-15E in a way. ADDENDUM:
About the design for the Clone Wars' Y-Wing:
From here.”The vehicles stayed very much the same,” said Russel Chong. “The Clone Wars Y-wing was a really fun project, bringing it back fully faired. We back-engineered the Y-wing and turned it back into a bomber. I took the actual model of the Y-wing from the files at Lucasfilm, and I overlaid our new version. We revitalized the bubble turret that Colin Cantwell and Ralph McQuarrie had developed. All the body panels are very much the same as the original Y-wing. I did my best to give it the same styling and the same look as the original Y-wing.”
“Texture is the process color and texture to the 3-D model using 3-D paint programs and photoshop,” explained Tim Brock. “When we first started the project, Dave Filoni was pointing in the direction of Ralph McQuarrie, and we really wanted to pull from that 70s style of sci-fi illustration. We took one of Ralph’s paintings and projected it onto 3-D geometry. The eureka moment we had was when we took off specular highlights — the way light reflects off the surface on 3-D. By pulling it off completely, we were able to keep the integrity of the painted surface and have the characters really fit the painted background.”

possible considering how Anakin deals with losses to those he cares about (his mother and Padmé for example), he'd might brood about it if any of them didn't make it.

Am I the only one who found the multiple direct quotes of Star Wars movies to be a little grating and annoying?
It was decent spaceship porn if you didn't think about it too much. I guess I'm just glad that Anakin didn't jump out of his cockpit and destroy the ion cannon with his lightsabre.

Re: Clone Wars series (SPOILERS)
Now the real question is if they will surprise us and drop in a republic heavy like a Mandator or a Praetor to finish the malevolence off instead of the implied anakin rampage boarding operation.
I did get a screen cap that has a projected shadow of a ywing prominently displayed on the midstern ridgeline sidewall of the malevolence, I will post shortly.

I grabbed some nice and clear captures from the Malevolence commentary on the official site. Nice, clear shots of the model with some good closeups. I'll post them later.

I for one thought that a battle droid having "a bad feeling about this" was kinda too much.Anguirus wrote:Am I the only one who found the multiple direct quotes of Star Wars movies to be a little grating and annoying?
Other than that, I find the series to be surprisingly cool, with some minor annoyances like "Jedi in space (literally)".

Re: Clone Wars series (SPOILERS)
Just from that bit, I liked how it showed that ships that were destroyed actually taking damage and breaking apart, instead of just exploding in a nice clean fireball. And the Y-Wing that crashed into the ship was still more or less intact, which I thought was kind of cool...Darwin wrote:It almost looked to me like someone ejected in that collision. Although the medical station housing some 60,000? clones and being the only one seems kind of... off.

It's at the start of the war, it was meant to be secret and it's in the Outer Rim. I think there's others, but they're in more secure areas of the galaxy.

Re: Clone Wars series (SPOILERS)
Ender, I'd love to see those pics of the Mally. I have a couple of shots that might establish an upper-limit to her size; all I need is a decent length/width ratio.
Based on this shot ...
... I figure the ion cannon is slightly more than twice a Venator's height, or approximately 540m tall/wide.
Thus, based on this shot ...
... she's about 8-9 km long.
EDIT:
This is an interesting image:
Compare a Venstar's width to the ion cannon's "height." Since Maleovence is closer to the camera, this pic establishes a firm upper-limit for the ion cannon's diameter; i.e., ~760m.
Given that we know Maleovence is roughly 15 times longer than her ion cannon's diameter, the ship is less than 3.7 km wide/11.4 km long.

Yeah, there's a massive retcon-job slowly coming along at LFL.
Hell, they still haven't resolved SW:CW and LOE's depictions of the Battle of Coruscant.
I do like how Anakin's scar is in the show, putting this after Dreadnaughts of Rendili and Palpatine's home fleet appropriation act, meaning the Republic Navy has taken control of even the large Core Worlds home fleet ships this early in the war. Which makes sense, given the internal Rendili conflict would be better suited at the beginning of a war, when all had to choose sides, instead of towards the end.

They were as I recall using RimSoos and those medical frigates... I'm assuming that they were relying more on "mobile" facilities than stationary ones (at that point.) That would make that the only large, stationary facility they had (and quite probably the best equipped... designed to handle the nastiest cases.) Honestly continuity hasn't improved a whole alot since the pre-ICS days, despite all of Chee's efforts. Its simply too big and complicated a task for one poor man to handle, and there are too many projects, viewpoints, agendas, opinions to always unify it. Hell, you'll still see WEG material creeping into stuff DWR and Curtis s upposedly "retconned" and that in DK books (its happened.. the 120 km death star)Darth Fanboy wrote:If that's true then the guys running the holocron have some work and retconning to do.
