It's okay to call your opponent a terrorist and incite hatred as long as your intentions are patriotic! Facts you say? Who needs facts? In an interview with CNN's Dana Bash Monday, John McCain actually said the following with a straight face:
BASH: Now, whether or not, since I know you've heard this during your rallies, since you have been talking about Ayers -- and your running mate has, also -- we've heard people in the crowd screaming things like "Terrorist!," "Traitor!," when you talked about Senator Obama -- and worse. When you hear that do you...
MCCAIN: I've heard the same thing, unfortunately, at Senator Obama's rallies being said about me. There's always a fringe element that's in politics in America. The overwhelming majority of the people that come to my rallies are good and decent and patriotic Americans. And if they're worried about this country's future, that's correct.
But to somehow -- to somehow intimate that of the thousands of people -- 17,000 people were just with us in Virginia. And to somehow intimate that the overwhelming majority of those people, with rare exception, are somehow not good Americans or are motivated by anything but the most patriotic motives, is insulting. And I won't accept that insult.

Re: McCain: Obama Supporters are Mean! Waaahh
Read it again. He's saying he's got two types of supporters, a large swath of true patriots who are worried about the country's problems and a fringe he's not responsible for who are just as bad as Obama's supporters. If this rally was held in Edinburgh, one might go so far as to say that fringe weren't really Scotsmen. No True Scotsmen, anyway. It's okay to call your opponent a terrorist and incite hatred as long as your intentions are patriotic! Facts you say? Who needs facts?

Well I don't support Obama and to some supporters of the Chosen One that makes me either a racist or a Nazi. I admit whining that people are being mean to you in a political campaign is a bit childish and I wish both candidates would stop it and just go back to flinging mud at each other. And Bounty is right you can't really do much about the fringe supporters other than politely ask them to stop.

That you refer to Barack Obama as the Chosen One makes you sound like an idiot; whether you're a racist, I certainly can't tell from your post.chr335 wrote:Well I don't support Obama and to some supporters of the Chosen One that makes me either a racist or a Nazi. Opposing Obama doesn't make you a racist; supporting McCain doesn't make you a racist. Supporting McCain/opposing Obama because you believe Obama is a terrorist, or an Arab, or because (even if they won't admit it to themselves) he's black, is racist.

I think he's referring to the notion that Obama supporters look up to Obama the same way supporters of Jesus the messiah looked up to him (or even the notion that Obama himself may see himself as a messiah, in some way; remember when Obama gave his acceptance speech and it was pointed out that the Greek columns on his podium meant that he saw himself as some sort of god). Maybe he finds it creepy that many Obama supporters have such passion for their candidate of choice.Bounty wrote:Sorry, the Chosen One?

If so, it's not the first of his articles I've read in the Times lambasting Obama for his 'messianic' persona. I don't know any details of his biography, but from what I've read he has a decidedly rightist slant towards his writing.Bounty wrote:So he wasn't being ironic there?

Supporters such as whom? Can you name them? Quote them? Are they shouting slurs about McCain and Palin at Obama rallies, and going unrebuked until after a week of negative media attention and falling favorability ratings? Point 1: Has it ever occurred to you that a majority of talk radio shows are right-wing? (Limbaugh, O'Reilly, Michael Savage, etc.)chr335 wrote:Well I heard some caller on a radio show make the claim if you don't support Obama you are a racist or a Nazi.
Point 1 corollary: Has it ever occurred to you that the right likes to use plants in radio and television to instill a distorted view of their opposition candidate?
Point 2: Did it ever cross your mind that it might have been a Republican operative trying to cast Obama supporters in a bad light before their target audience, so as to ensure their loyalty?
I simply don't believe you. I've never even been called sexist for making fun of Palin in front of right-wingers.I have been personally called a racist by fools in the street for not supporting Obama.

Well hooray the fuck for you. Concession accepted on the rest of the post: McCain's lunatic supporters are shouting slurs and inciting violence on camera, in earshot of the candidates, at McCain and Palin rallies and, until Friday, got away with unrebuked. Meanwhile, you can provide no evidence of the same thing happening even once at an Obama rally, let alone evidence of speakers on the stage and the candidates themselves inciting the mob.I have been personally called a racist by fools in the street for not supporting Obama. I treat these people with the same contempt I treat those on the right that call attacks on Palin sexist

Re: McCain: Obama Supporters are Mean! Waaahh
Actually you could reject, or denounce, or reject and denounce, the statements made. When Obama's pastor made some controversial but probably correct statements about the intolerance in America, an intolerance we're seeing front and obvious in a lot of dialogue out there, Obama broke away from the guy in the strongest terms available. He denounced the types of violence that Ayers and his associates did back in the Vietnam era as well. When his crowd just got down and really boo'd McCain at his economic conference he calmed them down and got back on topic, and went out and called on everyone to back the hell off of family.chr335 wrote:And Bounty is right you can't really do much about the fringe supporters other than politely ask them to stop.
In no circumstance has this "Oh well, what can you do?" attitude applied to the left-wing crazies or Obama's crazyfolk. When Sarah goes to a Church with insane witch-hunting pastors people shrug it off and say "Well, she probably doesn't believe that." When she speaks to the Independance party, a noted right-wing crazy group with the intent to break off from America, you are met with thunderous apathy and the justification of "Well, that was Todd who was in that party." As if your Husband is less close to you than your Pastor when it comes to America denunciation? When the McCain rallyfolk spit out racist comments at newspeople and whip up the crowd with "Little Hussein" monkeys and "bomb him" and "off with his head" and other kinds of insanity, people just throw up their arms and say "What can you do except politely ask them to stop?"
You could turn around like the man you used to be and say "My friends, these kinds of attacks on a good man, a good American, are not only wrong but they're unpatriotic, hateful, and they're not what America needs at this time of crisis--and you disrespect the memory and honor of the fighting men and women of this country by hating an American for being different. Freedom, dignity and liberty are what our soldiers are fighting for right now, my friends--not intolerance." And so on and so forth. When a left-wing crazy shrills about racism, at least they aren't threatening violence, or attempting to deprive someone of their rights. The kinds of insanity the two extremes have are not equivalent, and the racist asswipes of this nation are quite populous. You can dislike Obama and like McCain and do it based on something reasonable, but no honest supporter of McCain should ever demean himself, his candidate or his country by saying there's nothing you can do but "ask politely" for someone to stop complaining that America is what it promised to be--a place of opportunity where maybe anyone could become President. You want to know where the traitors live? Find me anyone with a confederate flag, and we'll work our way outwards from there.

Also, do you always go around shouting your political affiliations to "fools in the street"?
Should any political party attempt to abolish social security, unemployment insurance, and eliminate labor laws and farm programs, you would not hear of that party again in our political history. There is a tiny splinter group, of course, that believes you can do these things... their number is negligible and they are stupid. --Dwight D. Eisenhower
