Medieval nomadic, with the population living as traveling herders. The center of the single super-continent is inhospitable, but the rest of the world isn't bad.andrewgpaul wrote:Attila was never described as a hellhole either (medieval world, IIRC).
Gudrun was the capital of the Helican sub-sector until a Chaos cult was uncovered infiltrating one of the noble houses. The Gudrunite 50th Rifles was the unit called on by Inquisitor Eisenhorn to aid in destroying the Necroteuch.
The Joruan regiments are recruited from multiple worlds - the officers from Joruan, which is considered a pleasant, civilized world. Joruan III provides the bulk of the manpower, and is a hot world with vast numbers of factories, producing the Joruan Dragoons' equipment.

You're thinking of Ryza IV, I believe. Most likely some other planet in the Ryza system is inhabited and tithes for the Guard.

Re: Famous IG regiments from nice worlds?
I don't know if they count as famous but the Volpone Blue Bloods appear (I believe) a few times in the Gaunts Ghosts stories, and they are all aristocrats and seem to be fairly civilised (even if this does translate into them being snobbish cocks). In Necropolis I think they were certainly supposed to be pretty well reknowned.

Re: Famous IG regiments from nice worlds?
I dunno the Bluebloods would count, consider they order an artillery attack against the Ghosts for no reason except that they did their jobs.
Re: Famous IG regiments from nice worlds?
Were there any descriptives about the world from which the Hydra Cordatus regiment in Storm of Iron? The Jourans, if I recall, didn't seem to have much complaints about the world they came from, and weren't gung-ho deathworld tough guy types.

It doesn't matter if the Bluebloods are nice guys, it matters if they come from a nice worldShadowtraveler wrote:I dunno the Bluebloods would count, consider they order an artillery attack against the Ghosts for no reason except that they did their jobs.
And as an aside, it was General Sturm who was the real dick there, though Major Gilbear had culpability, as he was present when Sturm gave the order to have the artillery attack. The rest of the Bluebloods may be snobs (Colonel Corday calls Major Rawne "scum" right after having a nice, friendly chat with him, after all), but they didn't do anything on that level.

Re: Famous IG regiments from nice worlds?
The officers of the Bluebloods are generally dicks, but then that can be true of a great many "officers" in 40K. The officers (Sturm in partitcular) ordered the arty barrage on the Ghosts. The Elites aren't much better (their storm troopers, basically.)
The rank and file don't seem to be a whole lot more dickish than other troops.. it seems to be a trait of heavy infantry as a rule (The jantine were also heavy infantry, an there was another heavy infantry in Ghostmaker who acted similar.) We see Blueblood rank and file in Dorden's short story, and they tend to interact with the Ghosts well. And to be honest, Gilbear is kinda likeable in Necropolis, at least towards the end.

Hydra Cordatus was a Forge World, invaded by the Iron Warriors during the 13th Black Crusade to capture geneseed stored there. Maybe nice other than that, but way too close to the Eye for comfort.Cykeisme wrote:Were there any descriptives about the world from which the Hydra Cordatus regiment in Storm of Iron?

The Jourans weren't actually from Hydra Cord, Dark.

Ah - I misread. I thought he was asking about a regiment from Hydra Cord, not about the Jourans. I mentioned the Jourans in an earlier post (although I misspelled it every time):Kuja wrote:The Jourans weren't actually from Hydra Cord, Dark.

Re: Famous IG regiments from nice worlds?
Errr, are any of these regiments from civilised, modern worlds actually famous in universe?
Its already obvious that a good number of the IG must come from such paradise planets, planets which are nice & settled, loyal to the empire and with just a tinge of Grimdark. First world planets so as to speak. But are any of these IG of note in the Imperium?

Many thanks! These darned computers always screw me up. I calculated my first death-toll using a hand-cranked adding machine (we actually calculated the average mortality in each city block individually). Ah, those were the days.

Re: Famous IG regiments from nice worlds?
There are degrees and it's pretty hard for a regiment or even a planet's Guard in general to be come Imperium famous. None save a few extreme like the Cadians are going to have a fraction of the name recognition that Space Marines would.PainRack wrote:Errr, are any of these regiments from civilised, modern worlds actually famous in universe?
The Valhallan's are definitely a widely know regiment. Heck, for them to be deployed near Tau territory indicates a very wide range of operations and they're known and respected (and feared). Valhalla is a civilized world, if adapated to a rather spectactularly cold climate.
The Harkoni are also well known. They're included as a regiment of note in the Guard Codex and turn up in fluff with some regularity. They're undoubtedly well enough known.
The Elysians are definitely of note. As Falkenhayn says, they've a very well respected regiment.
The Bluebloods and Patricians are both mentioned as being prestige units both in the Ghosts novels and the Sabbat Worlds Crusade, latter of which is written as if in universe. Both qualify for a reasonable degree of fame by that reckoning.
The Narmenian armoured regiments also have a fair bit of fame too. They aren't too prominent in the Ghost's novel's but the Sabbat Worlds Crusade mentions them as participating on the main fronts and in significant battles during the Sabbat Crusade. They certainly seem noteworthy, if not one the celebrity regiments.
The Gudrun Rifles and Jourans, not nearly so much. The former was a scratch assembled formation prepared for an impending Crusade and the latter was picked for a mission of slow suicide. Neither suggests a very noteworthy history.
