Fix the smilies!

Post by Darth Wong »

Has anyone noticed that some of the stock phpbb3 smilies have white pixels around the edges, which show up quite clearly in darker themes? If so, does anyone have the time to fix them?

If somebody can produce a fixed ZIP file of the smilies, I can upload them into the appropriate directory.

Do we have the old smilies somewhere? Because frankly, I think all the new ones suck.

EDIT: It looks like some of them have been restored already, unless I'm misremembering.

Not so much 'restored' as 'there from the start'. The following are the same as they were on oSDN, and were on nSDN immediately following the update: :D :) :( :o :?

To be honest, I'm not sure why these ones have not changed, where others have.

 :P  :| These are the four that changed. IIRC the last one "neutral", we didn't have before. They look retarded compared to the "classic" look smileys. It's like Einy got into them somehow.

The previous version of SDN had a neutral smiley but you had to go to the expanded smiley menu to see it.

The current version shows all of the smilies except for when you first hit quick reply.

Sure, those are the stock phpBB2 smileys. Any board still running the software, such as my old disused one, will have them. Give me a moment and I can put them in a zip file; unfortunately, I no longer have server space to stick them on for download.

We did have the neutral one before. I think whoever does this should add those awesome ones that show up in testing.

After reading some of the responses, I realized that the simplest solution was to dig up an old backup file from before the upgrade, and copy the old phpBB2 smilies on top of the lame new phpBB3 ones. Hit F5 to refresh your posting screen and see the improved (old) smilies again.

PS. As for adding new smilies, feel free to make suggestions.

Yeah, sure. Another retarded smiley for idiots to spam up their posts with, like that fucking cannon smiley. If you need a smiley to announce you're flaming someone, you're doing it wrong.

I fucking hate that cannon smiley, what possible role does it fulfil except spam? What would we lose by ditching it?

Some of these definitely have to make it in, including the teacher, the rage (replace the finger with this, maybe?), the suicide, and one of the dancing ones (I prefer the faster one).

Don't replace 'finger' with 'rage' (which I like to think of as the 'DAMN YOU!!!'); finger is actually used seriously sometimes (which bewilders me, but whatever), whereas 'DAMN YOU!!!' is meant to be a mock-rage.

(Unless you're trying to mock everyone who used 'finger' by replacing it with something more ridiculous, in which case rock on.)

These are the emoticons I would want to see added to the board:

Edit: Also, I'd like to second the hate on the cannon. It's seriously a really lame emoticon.

I, personally, object to smilies. Mind you, I am aware that there are people out there so entirely oblivious to sarcasm and irony that they need smilies so they don't die from brain aneurysms trying to figure out if so-and-so really meant what they posted. The board's selection of them is just fine as-is. I'll add my two cents to the cannon-smiley hate going on, though, and would suggest that those smilies that frequently turn up in Testing spam not be allowed to escape into the wild.

I don't think the dancing smileys are actually different, I just had two in my Bucket for whatever reason and accidentally posted both.

Is it possible to have a selection of smilies that are just avialable in Testing?

That way, we can keep the, shall we say, spamier smilies, but we don't have to worry about them in the more serious sections of the board.

I mean, Testing is pretty Spammy anyway....

You realize that any of those smilies are available in any forum right now, don't you? Hell, I've used "Image" multiple times throughout various forums. It's just slightly less convenient to go and post image tags.

EDIT: And honestly, if I had to pick only one smilie to add, I'd pick Image.

I detest that one.

A few I happen to like:

Image Good for the G&C forum.

Whether any of these get added is a different story. And if they do, I'm obviously going to have to remove the edges. But I have never seen the edges appear before even when posting on other forums. Hmm...

Really? It is one of the very few 'testing smileys' that I would consider suggesting adding to the board on any sort of 'permanent' basis, not that I actually know what it's supposed to be used for. The only other one I would suggest would be the TEACH smiley, because it's a lighthearted piece of punctuation for blocks of information. I actually like some of the others, but they aren't really appropriate outside of testing (admittedly, the "Image" smiley doesn't have much in the way of utility either).

A lot of the smilies suggested would be just silly, as they'd be put to almost no use. If you adore them so much, stick them on your Photobucket or Imageshack and use that. That's what I do, and it isn't terribly inconvenient. I just keep a list of the IMG links for them on a TXT file so I can grab them quickly and easily.

If smilies really bother some people so much, there is an option to turn them off, I believe. No reason to ruin our enjoyment of them just because you're an angry old man ;)

Well since this is a Star Wars Vs Star Trek board, maybe we could actually get some Star Wars and Star Trek smilies.
It seems to me, that outside of a hand full, (roll, lol, smile, fuck you, evil, bang head and twisted) most smilies are just a luxury any way. How much extra space would it take up if the board had 100 smilies? Can't be that much.
