Anyone wonder what happened to those tanks?

Post by Themightytom »

(CNN) -- Somali Prime Minister Nur Hassan Hussein Sunday welcomed the arrival of seven NATO warships off the coast of his country to help in the battle against pirates in the region.

In a photo provided by the U.S. Navy, pirates leave Ukrainian merchant vessel MV Faina on October 8.

"We are so delighted with the arrival of those NATO ships into our waters and they have our full consent to fight against the pirates," the prime minister said at a news conference.

"NATO can carry out any acts including military actions in our waters against the pirates," he added.

Responding to a request from the United Nations, NATO defense ministers recently authorized the fleet of naval vessels to help protect U.N. World Food Program ships carrying relief supplies to Somalia.

The WFP ships had been protected by Canadian military vessels under a temporary arrangement that expired this week.

The NATO ships will also help "deter acts of piracy that continue to threaten the region," the alliance said.

It is part of an international effort to curb a spate of Somali pirate hijackings in the past year in the Gulf of Aden, which partially borders Somalia.

More than 60 ships have been attacked by Somali pirates in the Gulf of Aden this year alone, compared with about half that in 2007, according to a report released earlier this month by Chatham House, a London-based institute that analyzes international affairs.

The report found the $18 million to $30 million in ransoms already paid this year is helping to finance the war in Somalia. One of the groups reportedly receiving ransom money is Al-Shabaab, an Islamic militant group that is waging a bloody battle for control of Somalia. Al-Shabaab has been labeled a terrorist organization by the United States.

Pirates are still holding a Ukrainian ship carrying Soviet-made tanks, artillery shells, grenade launchers and small arms off Somalia's coast and are demanding a $20 million ransom. The MV Faina was seized in late September and is being monitored by nearby U.S. naval ships.

Last week, India sent a naval ship to escort Indian vessels traveling along the coast of Yemen and part of southern Oman.

Hassan said the pirates are an "absolute risk" to Somalia and the rest of the world.

I guess those tanks are still on the ship, so the pirates did not decide to start building an army :-p
Although they DO have the shells I guess (A question I was wondering about before.), as amunition is mentioned in this article

They could use the tanks shells as improvised IEDs, if they really wanted to. Or sell those shells to the Islamic Courts Union, who probably would like those things.
Turns out that a five way cross over between It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia, the Ali G Show, Fargo, Idiocracy and Veep is a lot less funny when you're actually living in it.

I doubt driving a tank is as easy as driving a truck. If your truck turns too tightly at too high a speed, it'll flip. If you do the same with a tank, its tracks will get thrown, and it'll become a paperweight until you repair the tracks; I doubt the pirates have the necessary training to do so. And even if the pirates can move the tanks off the ship without throwing tracks and making 50-ton paperweights, can they afford enough gas to get the tanks to anyplace worth attacking or defending?

Then there's the fact modern tanks have a starship's worth of electronics to help them survive the modern battlefield, e.g., the fire control system (so you can shoot accurately without first stopping the tank, at night and in poor weather), encrypted communications (you can avoid giving the enemy transmissions to intercept by relying on visual signals, runners, or phone lines strung between the tanks, but then you must deal with the obvious range and speed limitations), and even active protection systems. I doubt the pirates can learn how to operate these things by tinkering away, at least, not before getting each other killed, or before some Russian or NATO task force seizes the tanks.
Please do not make Americans fight giant monsters.

Those gun nuts do not understand the meaning of "overkill," and will simply use weapon after weapon of mass destruction (WMD) until the monster is dead, or until they run out of weapons.

They have more WMD than there are monsters for us to fight. (More insanity here.)

You could probably still use the tank as a piece of oldschool optical-fired field artillery even if you're not going to be doing much driving-and-shooting at the same time. I'm sure if they simply had no random money coming in they'd be able to find some purpose for the tanks.

If the pirates are smart they already removed anything of value they could secretly such as ammo and electronics. The tanks themselves are completely useless for reasons already given.
Maybe that's the reason for the ransom demand. They are just buying time to sneak off the stuff they have a chance of being able to use or sell.

They're being shadowed by several warships from several navies. I honestly doubt they've been able to sneak anything off.

Okay. I had thought they had a fair bit of time before the ships arrived, I guess they are completely screwed here.
