Obama sign taken from Chesterfield minister's yard, replaced with Confederate flag

Chesterfield County police are investigating the theft of a large Barack Obama campaign sign from the front yard of a Baptist minister. Someone replaced the sign with a large Confederate flag.

The campaign sign for Obama, the first African-American nominee of a major political party, was pulled from its wooden post Friday night and a Confederate flag was tacked to the posts.

Chesterfield police spokeswoman Ann Reid confirmed today that police are investigating the sign's disappearance as a larceny. Reid said the sign was taken between 7 and 10:05 p.m. on Friday.

Police say they are asking anyone with information about the theft to call CrimeSolvers at 748-0660 or the non-emergency police number at 748-1251.

This same thing actually happened to a friend of mine (minus the confederate flag). One of her neighbors keeps stealing the Obama campaign signs from her yard. It's pissed her off enough that she's started pricing security cameras so she can catch the guy in the act. I don't know if she'll actually follow through before the election makes it moot, but jerks stealing campaign signs is happening all over the place. I'm sure it happens with every election, actually, although it seems to be more common this time.

Here in the Puget Sound region, it's McCain-Palin signs that get stolen or defiled. Republicans are nailing them high up on trees or putting them in places that are hard to reach to try and prevent this from happening. I don't know how effective a campaign sign is when it's 20 feet up in a tree

In between my apartment complex and my school, there is this family dentristry practice that appears as if it is run out of someone's residence. He(The dentist, I assume) put up this gigantic "JOHN AND SARAH FOR AMERICA!" banner with a seizure-inducing red/white/blue background. Somone spraypainted under it "Bush/Cheney III!" with black spray paint.

It's been left up, altered and all. Maybe he agrees with the graffiti.

I saw a picture which had a hand-written sign over an Obama sign, which said basically that every time someone stole the Obama sign, the Obama supporter would buy another one and effectively be donating again to the Obama campaign.

At my old school it seemed to be an election tradition for the politics students to steal the largest most impressive campaign signs they could find and then leave them in my politics teacher's room.

Whoa, back up for a second. You have to pay for a political sign? In other words, someone who is advertising for a political candidate on their lawn (or whatever) pays for the privilege?

It might just be a little white lie to deter theft. Or perhaps they are donating for the signs, who knows. When we went out putting up signs in our provincial elections, we sure as hell didn't have anyone paying for the privilige, but a lot of people were donating at the same time as getting their signs.

Some assclown in my neighbourhood stole the Obama sign out of our front yard. I'm going to put up a new one and if that gets lifted... Well, I've got a plan to deal with that.

Its a campaign sing...source of grief for organizers and very little else. I get that they make the owner of the sign happy but that's about all the good they do...period. As 538 pointed out in Obama's curb-stomping South Carolina win there were 1,000 sings in the entire freakin state. They are nice but its kinda like the yellow ribbon for supporting the troops...it makes the owner feel good but does precious little else.

You want hardcore partisan politics? During our recent federal election several supporters of the Liberal candidate in one riding had their houses spray painted and the brake lines to their cars cut.

I don't have a link, but I read a story where an Obama backer in a rural area was constantly having his sign run over in the early morning by someone who'd literally drive through his yard to do so.

My response would be to put a barrel full of concrete behind the sign.
Impacting several hundred pounds of solid concrete would have a way of discouraging the asshat from a repeat performance.

After he paid to have the front end of his car totally rebuilt, that is. :P

During the last election, there was a big brouhaha about a Republican campaign staffer slashing the tires of vans that the Democratic campaign was going to use to transport elderly voters to the polls in Milwaukee. I'm not surprised by these things.
"The 4th Earl of Hereford led the fight on the bridge, but he and his men were caught in the arrow fire. Then one of de Harclay's pikemen, concealed beneath the bridge, thrust upwards between the planks and skewered the Earl of Hereford through the anus, twisting the head of the iron pike into his intestines. His dying screams turned the advance into a panic."'

Indeed. Campaign signs are like bumper stickers. They're about pride, tribal colours, and territorialism, and I'd seriously doubt any single person has ever had his mind changed by one.

Tire slashing, you say?

How about thirty cars?

Link
Someone slashed the tires of at least 30 vehicles parked outside the Crown Coliseum on Sunday during a rally for Democratic presidential candidate Barack Obama, authorities said.

Sheriff’s deputies are investigating. The tires were cut while people were inside the Crown Coliseum listening to speeches, said Maj. E. Wright of the Cumberland County Sheriff’s Office.

Many of the damaged vehicles were parked on Wilkes Road. Representatives from Obama and Sen. John McCain’s campaigns said they were unaware of the acts.

Susan Lagana, the North Carolina communications director for Obama, said it was extremely disappointing and unfortunate that “people would have to experience something like that.”

Mario Diaz, communications director for McCain, did not respond to a call late Sunday.

Sarah Revis, who lives on Wilkes Road, said the slashed tires left several women, including a single mother and a toddler, stranded and upset. At least four tow trucks were sent to move the vehicles from the Crown, Revis said.

“This is an embarrassment to this city and to me as a citizen,” Revis said. “I’ve seen women out here crying and men cussing. This is a crying shame.”

Lynne Steenstra said she thought that the slashings were scare tactics designed to keep her and others from supporting Obama.

Even though it cost her roughly $120 to get her Dodge Caravan towed and fixed, Steenstra said the act would not intimidate her from voting.

“It hasn’t deterred us one bit,” Steenstra said. “It has only encouraged us more. I just hope whoever did this pays the price.”

True.

OTOH, as far as that goes they are useful in providing a sense of 'unity' among a candidate's backers who see the presence of signs and stickers as an affirmation.

My $60 total donation to the campaign bought me 2 'Obama 08' bumperstickers and 3 buttons, one of which I'm going to give to my best friend's (he's a Barr supporter) daughter who is voting Obama.

'Swag for Cash' is a useful in that it allows the campaign to make money off of a phenomenon that they'd otherwise be spending funds on.

I'd imagine, although I certainly don't have any proof for this, that if, say, every lawn had an Obama sign, a potential McCain voter in the area would be intimidated or despaired and not vote. Of course, that's not exactly a feasible scenario.

On the other hand, when I started seeing a lot of signs for the other party in my neighbourhood, I decided it was even more important for me to cast my vote. If the neighbourhood had been awash in my preferred party's signs, I might have figured that it's not really necessary.

Then again, I'm not particularly vulnerable to peer pressure. Someone who is highly motivated by peer pressure might react in the way you describe.

I found this to be quite interesting. Now, I don't condon in any way some of the crap that's been said at the McCain rallies, but at least it isn't becoming violent. People cry about the stupidest things. "Wah!! He called Obama a socialist so that means he a racist!" (http://voices.kansascity.com/node/2493). When it comes down to it, I think it's important to do some soul searching and really think about the absurdity of being injured by the words of another. You can call me any name one could possibly think of... does it effect my physical health? Does it effect me financially? Absolutely not. Could it effect me emotionally? I suppose it could. Would I ever let words effect me that way? Absolutely not. If I were, I'd consider myself to be a little bitch and a cry baby. That being said... yea, the McCain rallies tend to attract the riff raff that might likely say something "offensive".... who cares. At least they aren't doing this.

http://www.local6.com/politics/17784129/detail.html
Rog Coverely said several pellets pierced his Longwood home. Coverely showed several spiderwebbed-holes in the front windows of his home.

The Republican manager said he is convinced he was targeted because of new McCain signs he added around his home.

"All I can tell you is this, I have a very good relationship with my neighbors," Coverely said. "I mow my lawn. The only thing that has changed is I have two McCain signs in my front yard."

Coverely said he has taken about 300 calls concerning stolen or vandalized McCain signs in the area.

"It says this campaign is getting vicious," Coverely said.

Coverely said it appears Democrats are becoming more aggressive in the county.

"I wouldn't say slipping but I would say the Democrats have become far more aggressive in Seminole County because it is such a heavy Republican area," Coverely said.

Local 6 has learned that the attorney general's office is getting involved in area investigation and has asked to see police reports of sign vandalism and theft.

Meanwhile, McCain will be in Florida Thursday.

The Republican presidential nominee is speaking at Allstar Building Materials in Ormond Beach. Later he'll be in Sarasota for a "Joe the Plumber" bus tour rally at Robarts Arena.
