Weird new radio station
Just flipping around the dial tonight and found a new radio station here. All they play is the Rolling Stones. Seriously. They're even tagging themselves as "The all new Stones 97.3" And so far, no commercials or DJs.
Must be new owners wanting to attract attention for a new format later on, probably FM sports radio or something. That, or some new weird format where a station makes it's playlists from entire artist catalogs, one at a time?
Anyone else (in the US) have a station like this on their airwaves?
(Actually, radio from anywhere would be interesting to know about, but knowing about any US stations would answer more of my questions, ya know?)

That'd never fly in New York...we're the number one radio market in the US as I recall. Fees and crap are probably a lot higher and any station that tried it would probably go bankrupt tout-suite.

And TV as well, I think. (Last time I was in NYC, some station had strippers on the air, doing their thing. That was strange, dancers on the radio.)Dalton wrote:That'd never fly in New York...we're the number one radio market in the US as I recall.
We get a lot of test market stuff here though, we're quite superior in our averageness Might be something like that. I guess it will be more obvious when they start playing commercials, the frequency is too high be a non-profit/college/religous station.Dalton wrote:...any station that tried it would probably go bankrupt tout-suite.
Its most likely a 'stunt' as they term it in radio. When our local 'alternative' station turned into a classic rock station they played "Its the End of the World" by R.E.M. for 24 hours straight........
In a day or so they will probably start into normal programming, classic rock by the sound of it.

I believe stations that play the same band over and over again are widespread: They're called hit music stations.
Some stations have days where they only play one band, usually as a promotion. When the Rolling Stones came to Pittsburgh, for example, one of the stations only played their music that day.

The mystery is solved, kind of.
from one of our local newspapers:

I wonder what next week's format will be?New station starts up the Stones
The Beatles are so, like, yesterday. But if you're a Rolling Stones fan, it turns out that you can always get what you want.
Especially if what you want is all Stones, all the time. The new radio station at 97.3 FM, which last week called itself "Beatles 97.3," morphed into "Stones 97.3" early Monday. It had played Fab Four tunes for a solid week.
The station apparently still hasn't decided what its permanent format will be. Last week officials said it could be a month before they know.
So, until then, the "stunting" will continue. If you happen to like what they're playing at the moment, this is good news: There are no commercials and no DJs.

Ugh. Pink Floyd is OK for a couple of listens, but Roger Waters is too much of a douchebag to warrant any long term enjoyment. IMO, anyway.Frank Hipper wrote:Be thankful if it's Pink Floyd!

I'm studying for the CPA exam. Have a nice summer, and if you're down just sit back and realize that Joe is off somewhere, doing much worse than you are.

Pink Floyd is not something to listen to constantly anyway. Not only is it overplayed (here, anyway) their music tends to start getting dull and tiring.

Well, who's been in the news a lot lately besides the Stones?
