New Star Wars MMO - Star Wars: The Old Republic

Post by DesertFly »

Apparently Galaxies didn't suck enough, and they didn't squeeze enough money out of single player installments of Kotor, since now we have The Old Republic. Of course you will be able to start as a Jedi, even though that was something that was hard to get to (and was made to seem so in the single player offerings), so we'll have a bunch of idiots running around waving lightsabers.

I guess I'm just bitter that they're going the lucrative, story-raping route of another MMO (BTW I'm really bitter about shit from Galaxies making it into Wookieepedia), instead of something where your deeds have import, and consequence.

Like it or not, and despite the fact that later on it fucking sucked, Galaxies was a goddamned genius example of game design. Only now instead of Satan Online Entertainment pissing all over the project, we have the masters at BioWare digging into it.

I can't say I'm nearly as fond of the setting, but I'm cautiously optimistic about what this will bring to the MMO and Star Wars RPG scenes.

Cautiously optimistic is my frigging credo when it comes to this game.

Lets Review
It's Bioware(fuck yeah!)
It's an MMO(Fuck no!)
It's Star Wars(Woohoo!)
It's Star Wars(Oh no!)
It's the Old Republic(Yay! Very little Canon to deal with conflicting)
Not quite old enough that Revan might show up(Or the Outcast, fucky fuck fuck)

Lets be honest here, it's an MMO which means griding, it might be disguised real well but your talking about leveling up, running quests and being unable to affect the world in any long term sense.

I didn't get a chance to try it early on, but when I played it later it was just painful.

From an in-universe standpoint this actually will be much better. No longer will it be "important figures from the Rebellion and Empire standing around on random planets waiting for people to come by and beg for work", and the more even parity between the opposing sides means that it won't seem as stupid as having people actively declaring their allegiance to an illegal organization. To be honest, despite my initial hate, I will probably at least give it a chance.

I've never liked Galaxies, but some of the design decisions did seem pretty clever to me back in the old days. One of the things I liked was how Jedi were handled, IE: You were never going to be one. That is unless you got REALLY lucky. Even if you did, you had to spend your life on the run and in hiding constantly avoiding player bounty hunters just like the movies. Then you know what happened?

People whined, as I heard. The Bounty Hunters weren't allowed to bounty hunt any-fucking-more. The Jedi eventually became a bullshit STARTING CLASS in a galaxy where they are supposed to be extinct or hiding. Above all, the game got STUPIDLY patronizing. "Hi i'm Han Solo and you're special! Come have a ride on the Aluminum Valcon!" All MMOs are patronizing, but Galaxies is so blatent it deserves special mention. Somewhere down the line, SOE -like it always does- completely gave up on the game, and issued the worthless NGE as a giant middle finger to the fans that actually enjoyed the game. I wasn't surprised though really, I had been an avid player of Planetside for a while, and SOE had done the same thing to PS a while ago.

End hijack. Also, I want a chopper, with reassurances it will take me straight to Cuba.
Best care anywhere.

I might just start praying to one or more gods if it would mean I could play the core game without having to interact with the cretins that play(ed) Galaxies, WoW, or other MMOs.

Losing the ability to directly affect the galaxy, as in KOTOR and KOTOR II, seems disappointing, but I'll wait and see what ends up being released.

Hell. No.

I played Galaxies from day 1 - even bought a new graphics card so my system could handle it - and was quickly dismayed to find out that it sucked. The most enjoyable thing I could do was stand around in a cantina and play an instrument - and the lag problems were so horrible that on the rare occassion where I tried to leave town, it took for-fucking-ever to do anything. A game's not much fun when you walk three steps, freeze for three minutes, and repeat.

I would pay money - something I do not do on a monthly basis for video games - to play a well-designed Star Wars MMO. Come to think, I would like to see Sony let the Tribes guys who did Planetside out of their cage and back into the wild, and let them take another stab at an MMOFPS with Star Wars' Old Republic as a background, under the direction of a company that actually gives a shit. I know PLanetside didn't hit where it was supposed to, but they should at least be encouraged to go back to the drawing board and try again, with good material to work with and a gun to their career's head.
Note: I'm semi-retired from the board, so if you need something, please be patient.

Interesting rumour that may or may not be true. But apparently SOE deliberately sabotaged Galaxies so that when they launched EQ2 it would have less competition.

I don't think I'd play a new SW MMO. Galaxies scarred me to the point where not only did I cancel my account and uninstall the game but I shattered the CD's and buried the shards in my garden, then paved over the soil just to make sure.

It's gonna take a pretty special game to drag me off Warhammer.

Well, at least incompetency is better than malevolence...I guess...
I still have my Galaxies stuff, but mostly because I like the art book and I hate to throw anything away.
