It's not like this is the first time the B12 deficiency caused by vegetarianism/veganism has been brought up, either. These people never learn...oh well, I just make sure to consume enough meat to make up for what they don't eat.

Doesn't suprise me either. Most vegans have a horrendously deficient diet and this is the result. It's too bad they can't be charged with child abuse or something.

I've heard other members of the Straight Dope MB say that many vegans who tell them stuff like "I've never felt more heathy in my life!" almost always look like they're nearly dead.

On campus at Purdue we get alot of these trendy vegans, mostly inspired by the Hindi student population which is considerable. They never investigate it far enough to learn how to engage in a healthy vegan lifestyle, which is difficult and damned expensive.....It last about as long as their body vitamin and mineral reserve, then they get sick and start falling asleep in class.....its mildly amusing, I just hope to be there when one steps in front of a bus so I can say I watched natural selection in action

Hindu inspired veganism/vegetarianism is downright dangerous; some of the hardcore types won't even eat/allow others to eat animal food even when their lives are endangered.

I used to live in a residence hall and worked in the Hall cafeteria, we would offer a vegetarian meal option for all thoes so inclined the thing was that it was often sitting next to the regular meal option such as Fried Chicken, Salisbury Steak ect ect....One night this Hindi dude comes through and scooped up some of this veggie meal shit(it usually looked like ass , I dont know how they choked that crap down) and goes of to eat. Ten mins later he comes tearing back into the serving line screaming like a banshee, apparently a piece of the meat option for that night had spilled into the veggie one and he had taken a bite of it. You should have seen it , he looked like some one had just raped his sister in public he was freaking so bad. It took our Hall manager and three of his friends to calm him down.......all the while raving how we were impure and disgusting and how he would sue for 'defiling' his body, I had to go in the back and laugh my ass off.....

As for this woman , she should be prosecuted for neglect and child abuse. She failed in her duty as a parent to protect her children from harm and in so doing caused damage that will likely haunt them for the rest of their lives, all to promote a twisted version of the human diet......

Agreed. Shouldn't the child have the right to choose it's own lifestyle?

Of course, if we're talking about a child so young that it doesn't know any more than what it's parent's tell it, that's a whole other issue.

The child should thus be allowed to eat what it like's best.

I literally cringe every time I hear those words because I know it means that we have to drive around the city for 2 hours looking for some restuarant that serves "friendly" burgers, which ironically look and taste exactly like hamburgers--which vegetarians object to eating because it's either A) gross or B) murder. If it's so gross, then why go out of your way to eat something exactly like it, asshole?

It's something I've always wondered myself. Why eat a no-meat food that looks just like meat?

I wish I could just take one of these vegis, rip a tooth out of his mouth. saw it in half and than take a tooth from a herbavore(sp) and do the same. Show him how the thickness of the enamel is so differant clearly shows that biologically we are not MADE to eat only vegitable matter. Our teeth can't take it.

I agree with most people who've posted, but I'm still a vegetarian! (I may decided to switch back if I ever have kids)

Mainly, it's important to have a balanced diet no matter what else you're eating, and a lot of vegans are idiots in that respect.

Crown, the Homo erectus meat theory is supported, but meat might not have been the only high-quality food we switched to. Humans are unique in that we process our food, and can obtain a lot of nutrients form vegetables unavailable to herbivores.
