I've more often seen the strategy of conquering Alaska and sticking a factory there. If Japan can hold it long enough to start building there, it results in a method for them to start getting troops to mainland America without needing a navy. I've only really seen it successfully pulled off if America starts out in a heavy "Germany first" strategy to the point where they can't reposition their forces in time to take Alaska back.

I've also seen the strategy of putting a factory on French Indo-China and usuing that to take China and Russia from the East.

That's a really good one - mostly because the only powers in position to attack FIC are Britain and the US, and hopefully by Japan's turn an attack on FIC is an incredibly risky proposition for them.

Probably the best counter I've seen is Britain building a factory in Australia and stockpiling infantry for later use in an island-hopping campaign.
