EDIT: I just scaled up your avatar from 80x80 to 100x100 with Photoshop, and it doesn't look bad, as long as you change it away from Indexed Color before upping the scale.

Spanky, try adjusting the color palette between 64 and 128. 64 colors should be plenty for that pic to look good, but somewhere inbetween the two might yield more satisfying results for you.
Or try it as a non-interlaced jpeg. That's what I had to do to get away from too much gif pixelation.

GIF at 128 colours and no dither gives me 6.69K, and at 64 colours with diffusion gives me 5.49K.

I'm not too sure how much you know about this, but just in case.... can you adjust the compression ratios, inter/non-interlaced features when saving as a jpeg?
I'd almost swear it looks like it was that colour originally.
Kinda like that one piece of production artwork for TPM where Yoda had black robes.
The dark and light edge marks from the Burn tool kinda give it away, but that's just my Photoshop nit-pickiness flaring up.
Hmm, now I would have given him a pure black robe, lengthen his hair a bit, put him in a big muscle-car with flames in the background, swap his head with a grimmer-looking mugshot shot from TPM, put lightsources in his eyes, add a soft light color layer, some extra shadows and retexturized clothing using a second semi-transparent layer...
This topic got me thinking a bit, espically since I wanted to experiment with the optimizer in PSP 7. I was experimenting with getting a 100x100 in JPG, GIF, and PNG formats below the 6k limit.
This is the original I was working from, cropped and resized from the original image I quickly grabbed off the internet when I releized that I didn't have a decent version on my hard drive.
Format is PNG, 16.7 million colors. Original size would've been around 30k, but having it in PNG format puts it down to around 18k without really doing much to the image.
From what I can remember - the first one is in GIF89a format with 89 colors via Optimized Octree. I can't remember if it's interlaced or non-interlaced at the moment, but the byte difference is only about a dozen either way. The second is in JPEG format with a compression ratio of 6 (compared to the default 15), and has 6061 colors if you're really curious. The third is in PNG format with the colors reduced down to 143 with Optimized Octree.
