Dr. Peter Nguyen was the son of Tonkinese doctors who had moved to Cascadia seeking a more stable life and fairer social climate than the hypercapitalist Tonkin. He had gone into the family "business" as it was and was now an accomplished researcher at UOT's department researching the world's most deadly contagions.

The news was abuzz with news that Shepistan had just launched a biological agent attack on Astaria and the threat was sending the world into a fit of worry and anger. Just this morning Dr. Nguyen had received six calls from higher ups to hurry his own research on one of the believed agents in the attack, the deadly Shroombola.

Yesterday he had been years away from a cure or a vaccine. But when he woke up, he... knew. He didn't know what he knew, he just had a biochem sequence that had popped into his mind and filled him with an insatiable need to test it on the Shroombola.

So he did.

And now he was staring into the microscope in amazement as his sudden epiphany killed the Shroombola.

How?! was going through his mind. How in the HELL had he cured Shroombola overnight?

He double-checked his results. Triple-checked. He called in associates to make sure. They all agreed.

Dr. Nguyen had just cured Shroombola. And he didn't have the faintest idea how....

Nor did he know he was not the only researcher to get such ideas in these days. Across the world other researchers got similar epiphanies, epiphanies that would enable the curing and elimination of every single type of bacteria or virus that the Shepistanis had unleashed.




Somewhere Else


The cosmic trickster entity called Q sniggered to himself. He supposed he could have just had the bio agents fizzle (thus saving dozens, hundreds of lives), but the thought of frustrating that sociopath Sheppard by nullifying his entire biological agent stockpile instead appealed to him far more.

He composed a note and had it materialize on Sheppard's desk.

Two years. It took you two years to indulge in mass slaughter. How delightfully sociopathic of you. But seriously, you've already destroyed one world, I'm afraid I can't let you jeopardize another..

Over Astaria
Several Days Later

Millions were dying below as the flight of aircraft came overhead from myriad nation. In pre-arranged grid patterns the transports' sprayers went to work, distilling their cures into the air of Astaria. The World was still awed by the sudden finding of the agents that would retard these diseases, even the advanced forms cultivated by Shepistan's Bio-warfare people.

Though the death toll was high, well over a third of Astaria's population, the aerosol-form cure would at least save the rest.


Result:

By Act of Q, all of the Shepistani bio-agents have been neutralized. Astaria has been cleansed and is fully habitable. The Astarian death toll will be at roughly 35% of the pre-attack population.

OOC: Since there are no mods, I figured 'tis better to ask forgiveness than permission. Naturally it is up to the other players if this is permitted to stand.

Will be going to bed now. I'll wake up in the morning and see how the reactions have gone.

Roger Simon of the Astarian Bio-Sciences institute stared through the microscope at the agents writhing below.

"It's hopeless. The so called-cure that the world is spraying won't work."

"Won't work? What are you talking about?" asked his assistant.

Dr. Simon brought up two video images on his computer screen.

"On the left is the original Shepistani Shroombola agent released almost two weeks ago."

"On the right is a sample taken from a corpse recently. They look the same don't they? Now we apply the so called cure."

On the screen, the left hand agent slowly died, while the right hand agent continued writhing in evil movement.

"It's mutated beyond what the Shepistanis originally dropped on us. The so called cure is worthless."

Suddenly, at that moment, a low rumbling noise filled the tent. Running outside, they caught sight of dozens of contrails streaking through the sky.

40,000 feet over Astaria



The Shepistani JB-89 White Chrysmantheums cruised high above the Astarian continent; they had been loaded with alternate biological agents after the half-assed Astarian attack on Shepistan; and were sent out to finish the job that the SSANs had begun.

Below them, the landscape of Astaria stretched below -- on their RWR scopes, it was a black hole, with only a few intermittent fire control radars operating; two weeks of contagion had done a good job of collapsing their air defense network.

As the planes reached their target points, from each one, a mixture of 250 kilogram biological agent spreader bombs, and 250 kilogram vacuum bombs began to rain down onto the largest concentrations of Astarian survivors far below. These were loaded with alternate agents; such as Boutilinism, Cholera, Rabbit Fever, Q Fever, Rocky Mountain Fever, Equine Encephalomyelitis, Yellow Fever, and Psittacosis.

To add insult to injury, several KC-22s roared in at treetop level, spraying anthrax spores from the huge spreader tanks in their bellies; and no human being aboard; for they were piloted entirely by drone computers linked to the JB-89s.

Announcement from the Department of Public safety

Due to the callous attack on the Old Dominion the following measures are enacted for the temporary emergency:

(1)Martial Law is Declared. There will be a Dusk-til-dawn curfew.

(2)Public venues will be closed down for the immediate future, except for Vaccine stations as indicated. Rations will be delivered to households.

(3)The Territorial Army is ordered to muster to aid in the law enforcement for civil authorities. The CCC will aid in the disbursement of vital necessities to the population.

(4)A early morning VTC session was held between The Lord Fairfax, General Sheppard, and First Citizen Julius of Augustine. A voluntary quarantine of the continent of Shepland has been declared. Due to the lack of gravitas the East Shepistani government has had over the situation, the ODAAF and AAF will be enforcing a no-fly zone over the country. Already both the ODAAF and AAF have each shot down passenger airlines attempting to make their way to South Sea Islands.

(5)Persuent to the aerial blockage, a Sea Blockade will be established as well around East Shepistan.

(6)A shoot-on-sight order has been issued to all persons attempting illegal entry into the Old Dominion Proper from East Shepistan and the Kanawha Tribal region. Shepistan has issued a similar order in regards to it's Western neighbor.

(7)The Old Dominion has received a vaccine package from the originators of the attack. Samples of the vaccine have been delivered to Shepistan. Beyond the morality of it, it is not in the interest of the Old Dominion to have a rapidly deteriorating Shepistan on our border.

Due to the state of quarantine in the continent of Shepland and Astaria, all FUN and Shroomanian shipments of aid and other deliveries have been diverted to the FUN Force administered area of Sirnoth.

Aid shipments will be consolidated and shipments to the affected territories may be resumed at a later time.

To prevent contamination, any future aid deliveries to Shepland or Astaria will be done through high-altitude airdrops - if the local governments so approve or request said deliveries - until more conventional methods of delivery are deemed safe.

No vessel or aircraft or person shall be allowed to make port, land, or set foot on the territories of Shepland or Astaria.

All Shroomanian assets have been diverted to Sirnoth and will not proceed any further unless authorized.


Result
All our aid stuff got stuck in Sirnoth, no one is going to Asstaria. We don't have people there, unlike PeZookia, so we're not touching the place. It can rot, for all I care.

President Stanislav slowly walked around the massive Vladimir Kremlin. He enjoyed thinking that this nation, under his leadership, has been able to weather all the crises in this world so far... including the latest one.

- It's been a little over one month, Yuri, - he spoke to his companion, Yuri Andropovsky. The ominous PCIA Director and the prime executor of Stanislav's policies; his right hand man.

- Yeah. Reports are sparse. Foreign TV companies do not have anyone operating in either Shepistan or Astaria, - he laughed. - And rightly so, who'd be doing it? A suicidal maniac? Only by the proxy information leeching out of the Old Dominion we have discovered some clues.

- What are they?

- Essentially, both nations are finished off. Instead of pinpoint attacks, like we presumed earlier, they used massive dispersal of airborne biological agents... our estimates yield dispersal areas well in excess of half a million square kilometers in either nation.

- Fuck! - President Stanislav dropped his pipe that he so loved to smoke. - How could one be so fucking reckless?! No, repeat that again - you are saying they contaminated well over a million square kilometers together?! The fuck! That's as large as the territory of the Crimson Star Republic itself!

- Indeed, - Yuri's voice was calm. - As long as a proper quarantine is maintained, we should not suffer the consequences of this deadiest war in history of mankind. But I shudder every time I think about it... to be so reckless with the deadliest weapons of mass destruction!

- I feel this will serve as a reminder to the world, - Stanislav murmured. - A reminder of the cost of human life... and the ease with which it could be taken. Maybe the rest would not be so eager to use their huge stocks of weaponized strains on each other... just maybe. How's the OD?

- They are doing better than most. After all, they've been granted vaccines to some of the Target Priority One strains. But Target Priority Two strains remain a problem. There are cattle epidemies spreading from Shepistan, which seems to have lost civil order - the waves of machine-gunned refugees, increasingly more armed - some with Shepistani armed forces assistance even! - trying to break the border of the Old Dominion... those are signs that Shepistan, on the inside, is close to total destruction.

- Dieout in Shepistan and Astaria... but how's the Dominion itself?

- If the Old Dominion keeps killing anyone who attempts to break into their nation, they might just make it. They had in excess of 500,000 infections and 200,000 fatalities already, according to their health ministry stats. They were smart to close hospitals for the first several days, those struck with anthraxite strains and varieties died before they could use the Public Health System to spread the contagion. Brutal, but effective.

- Did we send them humanitarian aid?

- Yes; we dropped tons and tons of incendiaries... it's reqiured to burn the bodies and decontaminate rural areas. And food of course; with the epizootic spreading, they face the risk of slaughtering too much livestock to actually still be able to feed themselves.

The President sighed.

- And thus an era is over. I want to talk to Shroom once I'm done here, - he said. - I just can't believe I'll be speaking to young pioneers today... Millions of people just died this month... and I didn't give a damn.

- You did what's best for our nation, - quickly spoke Yuri.

- I know.

The crewmembers onboard the KC-22, one of only about sixty left in the Shepistani Air Force, yawned inside their NBC suits.

This was another boring milk-run in the war against Astaria. This far into the war; there were no surviving coherent military forces left in Astaria; it was all chaos down there. They were about to add to the chaos.

"Drop zone in sight."

"Alright, give them our presents."

From the rear cargo doors, a pallet full of 550 pound bombs containing a variety of persistent chemical weapons and biological agents rumbled out, falling into the air, where it would split apart to scatter it's deadly payload below.

The ten KC-22s taking part in this operation flew along Astaria, dropping their pallets of bombs onto key sites...

VICTORY!

Today, General Sheppard announced Victory over the Slavocrats of Astaria, remarking in a televised address that all organized resistance et al in Astaria has collapsed completely. The 30th of October henceforth will be the Day of the Great Victory, where Shepistan remembers the fearful losses it took in doing what no one in the world would do -- ridding it of the most repugnant regime to exist on this earth, one that legalized chattel slavery.

"Yes.", Kane said, "The risk to us is minimized."

The teletypewriter in the royal palace's communications center hooked up to a secure line began clattering out the proposed cease fire terms between Shepistan and Zoria. They were incredibly generous, offering a final peace treaty with a status quo ante-bellum.

The same text was also being received at 10 Shrooming Street in Shroomania.

The final calculated costs of the equipment had been revealed. The first two parts of this deal would cost over 3 billion pounds. It was a frankly staggering thought when compared to previous military expansions by the other parties. In fact the Blue Iron Party could be attributed to dragging the countries military into the modern world. The costs could be covered anyway. It would be easy to justify it anyway with the expansions of other nations as well as the death and disaster that had gone on between Shepistan and Astaria. Not that Ciaran would miss those nations. One was a slave state despite its internal changes before and one was a trigger happy bunch of madmen.

He picked up the pen and signed the paper finalizing the purchase 8 battalions of the MLRS and 12 CH 53'S from The Sovereign Duchy of Baerne at the cost of 1.4 billion. He was waiting for a reply from the Duchy of Langley but it was estimated that it would be around 1.7 billion with an offer of some panther helicopters thrown in. Ciaran was pleased. The cost of the other aircraft proposed was eagerly awaited by him and it would make the airforce far stronger. There was something else on his mind though, the fact that so much damage had been done by bioweapons disturbed him. A plan was needed, one that could face a threat and not let the country die out due to massive infections.
Later that day it was announced that were would be massive reforms to the police, ambulance, fire brigade and the army. A new bill was being proposed by Joyce that would give the nation more information on what needed to be done in case of an attack and would let the services deal with it more effectively.

Result: Cialan accepts the deal from the Sovereign Duchy of Baerne to buy military hardware and waits for the other deals to be finalized.

A bill made to be able to make the country more able to cope with biological weapon attacks.

Atmosphere at the Royal Palace was grim throughout the day. A curfew was in effect in PeZookia, and the air force was on constant patrol to prevent any unauthorized incursions from Shepland or Astaria.

"How many dead?", Paul asked his advisors during one of the mostly-silent briefings.

"It's hard to receive good sources. Current information relayed to us via the CSR indicates tens of millions."

"Jesus christ...the Nazis neede five years and they didn't even come close!", Paul said before biting his tongue

His advisors stared at their sovereign.

"Nazis, sire?"

"Never mind...", the King said quickly and changed the topic, "What of our liaisons and the hostages?"

"Stanislaw III Wielki is still a week away. So far, however, none of the people aboard are exhibiting any symptoms. They will spend an additional month anchored offshore. And we'll need to replace two helicopters we threw overboard to prevent contamination.", the Defence Minister answered, consulting his notes.

There was another period of brief silence.

"It's just not possible to enact positive change through diplomacy, is it? We were on the right track, and then...", the King started again. Seeing what this would lead to, the Prime Minister countered quickly.

"With all due respect, sire, but Astaria's sheer immorality would've sparked this conflict sooner or later."

"Astarian immorality and Shepistani belligerence, you mean. We finally get on the right track, our people pay for the opportunity with ruined lives and suffering, and then Shepistan comes in and...well..."

The King sighed. Breaking down right in front of his advisors would be a very bad idea at this point. He put on his glasses and cleared his throat.

"Karol, write this down. The third of August - the day when 'victory' against Astaria was declared by Shepistan - will henceforth be known as Memorial Day, a national holiday dedicated to innocent victims of war."

The advisors noted the measure, careful not to mention FUN's aid in the Astarian biological counterattack. At least 1/3rd of the total death toll was, in part, PeZookia's responsibility.

"In six weeks, martial law will cease.I want a study on the economic impact on my desk in three weeks."

The captain of the Permit sighed. While those in the new fast Gatos were ranging around the world with their Igo-26s in their 40" Tubes; sending biological death onto Astaria, those assigned to the Permit and Flasher classes had gotten the short end of the stick -- the long duration endurance patrol missions, which were the original design rationale of the class; they'd disappeared into the vast abyssal plains of the world's oceans at the same time the Gatos had set course for Astaria; to be the ultimate final-strike system of Shepistan if things all went pear shaped.

They'd left port slightly undercrewed, with the extra space stuffed with enough food to last for well over a year -- and the huge hulls that they'd used left a lot of space for crew amenities like exercise rooms or minature pools, for the long missions expected of the class. It was only with the newer boats that they'd branched out into multipurpose missions like killing carriers.

Results
Three Shepistani SSANs are cruising the dark abyss of the ocean, ultra silent; when signals from Shepistan cease; they shall hide for a year, and then surface and unleash DEATH on everyone. This was the original genesis of my SSANs; I just added on the other weapons systems later when I realized how useful they were.

Basically, at the end of SDN World 1, Skimmer and me sat around and did a post-mortem; and we both realized the need for a secure FINAL strike system.

A month after the Shepistani-Slaver Skirmish, both Shepistan and Astaria are left lifeless and ravaged by plague and diseased - consequence of the reckless use of bioweapons by both nations.

Silence is all that can be heard from the radio channels of Astaria. Silence, or the repetitive pre-recorded messages promising "The Answer to Infection."

In Shepistan, the remnant government has declared a phyrric victory while its populace make their exodus from contaminated zones, only to be shot to death by Old Dominion quarantine enforcers. Bodies are burned immediately after processing. The gasoline shortage makes the timely disposal of individual corpses difficult, so often they are stacked in piles - for aerial firebombing using incendiaries graciously provided by the Crimson Star Republic.

Old Dominion, the neighboring nation of Shepistan, has emerged relatively un-ravaged - hundreds of thousands dead and dying compared to the countless millions lost in Shepistan, and Astaria. Vaccines were sent by the FUN to the OD immediately after the biological exchange, and while some were shared with Shepistan, the Dominion chose to save its people first and foremost.

Alison killed the television, the Prime Minister took his medication and buried his head on his aide's shoulders.

"Lusy..." Shroom said with a quiet voice.

"There, there..." Alison patted his head. "It'll be okay, just swallow your medicine and you'll feel better."

"I wonder if they'll oust me. A vote of no-confidence, an impeachment..." the Prime Minister babbled on quietly to himself.

"They won't," Alison answered. "The civil defense measures you enacted, and all that military stuff, has made them feel safer. Helps that you didn't declare Martian Law either. And, in a way, I suppose, most of them are thankful for having both Astaria and Shepistan wiped off the face of the world."

"This wasn't what I wanted... I wanted to help those people in Astaria..."

"You did. The FUN Freedom Fontanelle was active for half a month before the first bio-attack. Some Astarians, freed slaves, managed to escape before their little island got utterly crapped up."

"Really?" the Prime Minister looked up with teary but hopeful eyes.

"Yes, a bunch of pretty girls... milkmaids, if I remember correctly. They've even sent you a gift, for saving their lives," Alison smiled and presented Shroom a tiny milk carton labeled 'Sweet Meadows'. "It's sweet of them."

"Quite," the Prime Minister said silently as he took a straw and punched it into the carton. He began sucking on it. "Mmm... pretty tasty."

"By the way, sir... President Stanislav wants to meet you sometime soon."

"Okay," Shroom said feebly.

These viruses must spread fast, and have other useful attributes such as increased hormone generation, mental instability, sterility etc." said the Strategos.

"Quite a tall order."

"The Emperor has given his blessing though. Get to it."

FASTA bulletin

Kittens!

Despite the war between Shepistan and Astaria, the Mercury 2c launch will proceed on schedule. August 4th was set as the launch date two weeks ago, and FASTA officials decided to greenlight the test.

In a stunning development, however, the biological payload has been changed at the last moment: instead of one adult dog, named Laika, the capsule will carry two kittens, Mercury and Joe - supposedly, the change was made after a last-minute request by President Stanislav himself.

The support system had to be redesigned somewhat to accomodate the kittens, but no problems are expected. The capsule will orbit the Earth for six days and land in the Atlantic, where it will be picked up by a Shroomanian recovery group.

The next two Mercury 2 flights will both carry adult chimpanzees, as a final test before the first manned launch.

Alan Shroompard was selected as the primary pilot for the Mercury 3 mission, with the PeZookian fighter pilot Maciej Zakoscielny as his backup.

The decision was made after an ardorous selection process from Class 2008 astronauts. Currently, the Mercury program has four manned flights scheduled, with additional two possible in case of a failure, before it is closed and replaced by the Soyuz program.

Launch escape system test on mock Soyuz capsule conducted at Comona Island

A critical system of the Soyuz capsule has passed its first test yesterday at Comona Island. A mock capsule was fitted with an improved, heavyweight Launch Escape Motor, which succesfully carried its payload clear of a test Atlas-Sputnik rocket.

The initial two-man Soyuz-A capsule is expected to make its first flight some time in 2012.

Next-generation R-7 rocket to undergo engine tests in Comrade Stanislav Rocket Factory

The proud workers at the Rocket Factory, recently renamed from Comrade Stanislav Missile Factory, CSR, will attend an engine test for the new and improved 8K78 rocket, FASTA name "Soyuz Booster".

The rocket will have an additional stage and a lenghtened core (2nd stage), and is projected to be able to insert 6000 kilograms into low earth orbit, and 1500 kilograms into earth geostationary orbit.

Engineers at the factory expect even more longevity from the rocket.

"We have done amazing work with the R-7, and it still has potential", the factory's director said to the Bulletin's reporter, "I expect that at its peak, an R-7 derivative rocket will be able to deliver as much as 15 tonnes to low earth orbit, which will make it an ideal light 'workhorse' booster for the next two decades at least."
