I rather view this as a good thing. To some extent it will give Moffat a clean slate. This Doctor has been mangled so much, it's difficult to know what his character is any more.

A new Doctor, a new producer, a new beginning. I like the sound of that.

The only way I'd want that bigoted neanderthal involved is if the Daleks actually exterminate the fucker for real. A simply odious suggestion.

I concur. I little less hyperactive running about would make for a nice change.

Who's Next? A BBC Article. Contenders include Pertwee, Nesbit, the extra guy from Voyage of the Damned RTD liked so much and James McAvoy.

James McAvoy? Would he really be in contention?

And from all the other suggestions, I'd like to see Pertwee.

Sean Pertwee is certainly an actor of range. I'm most familiar with him from the first season of Cadfael in which he played Hugh Berengar, the local sheriff who is Bro. Cadfael's (Derek Jacobi) best friend and confidante.

Depends on whether they can get and hold onto a cast to very long. They've gone through two Doctors and three Companions (and a promising semi-Companion) all in the course of four seasons. I think at least some of the problems with the show stem from that relatively high turn-over rate. It's brought out the worst soap-opera instincts in RTD and has put the show in the position of always breaking in a major cast member.

I'm optimistic about this, to a certain extent, but ever since Billie Piper left things have been getting markedly rougher. If this really is a clean slate, they need to make the most of it.

Maybe. But the BBC could never afford him.

The 27-year-old, who appeared in The History Boys and Gavin and Stacey, is the youngest contender believed to be under consideration.

In September, Doctor Who writer Russell Davies suggested Tovey should be Tennant's successor.
What the hell is with RTD pushing for younger Doctors? Hey maybe in a few years we can have Doctor Who attend high school classes and get into wacky hijinx when the Daleks start shooting up the cafeteria kitchen!

Maybe he likes pretty boys.

When John Nathan-Turner cast 35 year old Peter Davison as the Doctor, it made sense because it put the Time Lord at a disadvantage being that not many people would believe in so seemingly young a man holding the wisdom of eight centuries in his grasp. Davison was a good enough actor to pull that off and not too young so as to make it unbelievable. But casting a 27 year old is simply ridiculous. The Doctor is an authority figure in the series and you actually need an actor closer to that type to pull it off credibly. David Tennant was just at the very edge of the envelope, and made the Doctor's authority believable when he indulged the darker aspects of the character —other times, though, he was in danger of fading into the background, which is what you don't want with the Doctor. You sort of need a figure that will be, if not overwhelming (Tom Baker, Colin Baker, Christopher Eccleston), at least be imposing enough (William Hartnell, Patrick Troughton, Jon Pertwee, Peter Davison, Sylvester McCoy) just standing there.

The Doctor has to be the centre of the room or the series doesn't work.

Was this in doubt? David Tennant (and as a side effect his show) is ludicrously popular with girls, because he's so cute. I imagine a noticeable portion of the fanbase would be unimpressed by an older Doctor.

I thought originally the Doctor was supposed to get physically younger with each regeneration, ageing backward as it were.
Or did that get retconned out of existence?

You're thinking of the legend of Merlin. There has never been any consistency in the seeming ages of the Doctor's various selves.

Oh we're talking years back, around the time of the fifth Doctor, back when I used to subsribe to the official Dr Who magazine.

I don't ever remember that being mentioned in DWM. In any case, it got blown when Colin Baker got cast after Peter Davison, and then Sylvester McCoy after him.

It wasn't anything to do with the age of the actors, more to do with their apperance, Colin Baker was meant to look younger and be more impetuous than Peter Davisons Doctor.
But as you say that aspect evaporated once Sylvester McCoy was cast, I was just wondering whether there was an in universe reason for this volte face.
