[Vote] Post editing

Post by AdmiralKanos »

We now have the ability to change the post editing rules. Instead of having editing enabled in certain forums or for certain users, we can have editing enabled for everyone in every forum, but only for a set period of time, like five minutes. That way, people can't go back and alter their posts to improve their arguments, but they can correct things they notice immediately after posting.

Of course, the ability to edit in all forums would no longer be unique to Senators, although Senators would still have certain extra abilities, like ignoring flood limits, posting Flash, attaching files (assuming that feature works; I haven't tried it), etc.
For a time, I considered sparing your wretched little planet Cybertron.

I voted for ten minutes. It should cut down on ghetto editing and prevents much of people editting for debates and what not.

And adding files works, but a word to the wise. Be careful, they tend to vary...so the same img rules still apply

I would say 5 minutes is about perfect in that it shoudl allow anybody to edit any little screw ups either in formatting or in grammer (something I admittedly do quite often). The thing is if you don't notice it immediately then often as not you won't review the post until after folks begin responding to the thread...at which point we get into the argument against editing. So yeah I think 5 minutes would be just about right.

10 minutes should be a good window. If someone is going to dishonestly edit his or her post, it's most likely going to be over the course of a longer debate, after being called on it by a post made much later on.

Yeah, 5 or 10 minutes. That's my generic edit window, I assume other people take a look at their post immediately after making it and if they messed up quotes or whatnot, can correct it.

10 minutes for everyone else, retain unlimited for Senators. It really will help improve the quality of the board to restore editing as a function for everyone, and especially to let them think twice about what they're saying if they've been hasty, so let's give them ten minutes to regret what they've said in, pretty much.

10 for everyone, unlimited for Senators would work. I almost always spot a typo or grammatical error the instant I post, but there have been times when I've gone back later, though never in debates.

Everyone should be able to edit for 10 minutes, senators unlimited is fine by me but not strictly necessary. I know even when I preview a post I still make mistakes and only notice them afterwards, and well, people should also just have the ability to rethink what they said and retract it if they want. If we have proclaimed with people making insults, and then editing them or something… well I don’t think they would be a problem unless two people are in a face paced argument, and it can be dealt with as it comes. I’d also like to get back the ability to delete posts as long as ones post is last in a thread. I used do that sometimes when I notice a serious mistake, and want to take some time to fix it properly, maybe reword a whole paragraph, without having had people respond to the original already, or making multiple edits.

Something about Libertarianism always bothered me. Then one day, I realized what it was:
Libertarian philosophy can be boiled down to the phrase, "Work Will Make You Free."

In Libertarianism, there is no Government, so the Bosses are free to exploit the Workers.
In Communism, there is no Government, so the Workers are free to exploit the Bosses.
So in Libertarianism, man exploits man, but in Communism, its the other way around!

One of my other boards has 10 minute editing and it has worked very well. Greatly cut down on ghetto edits and formatting weirdness.

10 for everyone, unlimited for Senate seems good. The ghetto edits and formatting fuckups are annoying as all fuck and if people can fix those on their own right after they post, all that much better.

I prefer the shortest editing period as well. Any typo or small, but glaring, error is likely to be caught in the first couple of minutes. In a fast, furious argument, ten minutes is probably starting to creep up on just long enough to do more than correct typos and spelling.

I also like keeping the unlimited duration for Senators.

I'm okay with five minutes, but I would rather vote for "force people to read their previews BEFORE posting". Not being able to edit posts forces people to see examples of what they need to improve when they post, assuming they don't just not give a shit about the quality of their posts or put up a mildly annoying "ghetto edit" or "mod please fix me!" post.
Note: I'm semi-retired from the board, so if you need something, please be patient.

I think it should be five minutes, senators included. A lot of replies can be fired off in a 10-minute span of time when the board is active.

OK, I set it to ten minutes. I'm not sure if I can continue giving Senators unlimited edit time or not; this new permissions system is pretty complicated and there is no documentation for it yet.

BTW, let me know if there are any bugs with permissions. Any time I change permissions, there's always the possibility that something will go funny.

Saw that I can't edit really old posts anymore. Might be mildly inconvenient in the Fanfics forum, where authors have been able to edit their thread titles to reflect updates.
