Doctor Who Children In Need special

Post by Bounty »

Well, the sneak peek at the Christmas special was on just now...
Spoiler
The Doctor ends up in 1851, where he finds another Doctor - himself - played by David Morrisey, fighting some sort of... steampunk Cyberman.
Intriguing.

Spoiler
And good gods, the assistant was in Kerching! as I recall, utterly barking mad, she is. And should be more amusing than a certain Martha Jones.

Spoiler
Sp why doesn't Morrisey recognise Tennant, like Tennant recognised the Fifth Doctor last year?
This does not give me hope for Christmas.

Look at when the other bloke is handed his 'sonic' screwdriver. Pretty much answers that question.

My guess? He's either a conman, or a guy who stumbled onto the Doctor mythos (lord knows there's plenty of rumours about him flying around) and somehow convinced himself he's the real thing. Either that or one of those Doctor-in-a-watch doodads went missing.

Tennant recognised the fifth because he was a past life. If this one is genuine then he'll be a future incarnation

Hence the "IF". Two most likely options,
1. He's a phoney.
2. Someone's crossed to an alternate dimension again.

Why on Earth are we spoilerising our posts here? As if anyone coming into this thread isn't already privy to what we're talking about anyway, if not, they have nothing to add to the thread.

Personally, I'm a bit unsure about this whole thing. More Cybers is iffy depending on how they do it, much as I love steampunk and Cybermen, together may look a tad crap. The new Doc? Again, unsure. I was hoping someone like Alan Davies, but I guess we're stuck with more obscure people (My brother said he was in The Reaping, which I barely recall in any form, let alone the one British actor in it and I never saw Blackpool), which can work given Tennant.

Though as Stark said, the whole bombastic nature of this Doctor is dumb. It's like when MI6 go to all that trouble to give Bond a new legend, only for him to introduce himself as Bond, James Bond anyway. This Doctor, if he has any foes, is either very lucky (true), or has very retarded villains (also true I guess).

I could forego the lack of identifying each other, but the personality of the potential new incarnation might be too hilariously OTT even for NuWho.

He's a great actor - the only dud I remember him doing is Basic Instinct. He had oodles of screen presence in Blackpool, and he'll do genuine drama just as good as he'll do comedy. I'm not sure he can carry the role in a series, but for a one-off, he'd be one of my top picks.

Also, get yourself a copy of Blackpool, it's genius.

Them both saying alonse at the end tells me that their personalities are far too similar to each other when compared with other doctors. Combine that with them not recognising each other and I can't see how the new doctor is a regeneration of Tennant's doctor. Which leaves us with him being a fraud with a time machine.

Especially when people are spoilerising their own speculation, making the thread hard to read unless you view everything inside the spoiler tags. This just runs the risk of someone coming along with an actual spoiler, using the spoiler tag on it, only to have everyone click it thinking it is just another non-spoiler. Especially since the real spoiler is likely to be in reply to some of the hidden speculation.

There's another possibility of course - that it's a Children In Need spoof and the real new Doctor has yet to be announced :P .

The last two Children In Need specials weren't spoofs, so I doubt that. I don't think he's the new Doctor for keeps, but it's definitely supposed to be a teaser of the Christmas special proper.

I found these scans of the Radio Times;

Front Cover and Article

Courtesy of Cathode Ray Tube. Davies thinks Morrissey is a fantastic Doctor, and Morrissey himself would certainly love to come back and play him again. Meh. I still Want Pertwee as the Doctor.

Morrisey would play a terrific Doctor. He can do light comedy as good as he does drama, and he certainly knows how to project screen presence.

If he does, he needs better writing though, that whole "this is a job for a time lord!" stuff is facepalm worthy.
If I had something interesting, profound or incredibly stupid to say, it would go here.

Quick question, if Tennant is no longer the Doctor would that mean that they'll resume making more eps instead of a year long hiatus?

At risk of prolonging the necromancy, no; he's leaving once they've finished all the 'specials' in 2009.
