I think another part of this -bigotry aside- is a desire among other minority groups not to stick one's neck out any further than necessary.

(Oddly enough, many Jews still participated in the 1960's Civil rights movement in the US)

Al Franken mentioned that his dad thought it was a Jewish to stand up for civil rights due to having taken the same shit, but worse. Anyone know how widespread the sentiment was?

Sorry about that, Solauren. We've had some attacks here in Salt Lake City, as well; some tongan guys (who apparently knew the victim) met up with a gay guy and his friend near the state capitol. After they found out that he was gay, they beat the shit out of him. And to think the fucking state legislature won't pass a "hate crimes" law because it might protect gays.

Actually, a hate bill was passed. It just doesn't include sexual orientation.

While Canada is definitely more tolerant of homosexuality than the US (based on polling about gay marriage), that just means the curve is shifted to the left. PS. I wouldn't be surprised if he works at one of the auto plants. Not just because a lot of people in Oshawa do, and not just because of the blue-collar stereotypes about auto plant workers, but also because of the fact that some of those plants are going to close, the entire domestic auto industry is in trouble, and a lot of those workers are stressed out and angry.

Just to comment on this as I do have some personal experience with Oshawa...You're absolutely right. It may be close to Toronto in location, but trust me, Oshawa is FAR from a gay-friendly town. I have sung at the only gay bar in town a few times over the last few years, and they told me in no uncertain terms that the reason the gay bar is outside the city limits and in a relatively isolated shopping mall complex is because it's still not ready for a downtown location.

As much as I love this country and am proud that more people on average are tolerant compared to statistical comparisons in places like the States, the reality is that the percentage that does NOT support you are just as hateful as they ever were. If there's 10 in a hundred or 2 in 1000, what does it matter? You can still have this very public and provocative situation when they decide to publically dislplay their bigotry. It's a lot less common as far as incidents are concerned, and that's a good thing, but until we reach 0%, it's still a problem.

Two of the three victims of the 1964 Mississippi Civil Rights slayings (the murders depicted in 'Mississippi Burning') were Jewish organizers; the third was a local black member of the Freedom Movement in Meridian.
