DocMoriartty wrote:Well every time the books had a description of Thrawn's art room I remember pretty well that the art was always the same type. When he looked at the Mon Cal art you the description was of several pieces of the same type of art. Every instance fell along those lines.
The scene to which you refer too, is when Thrawn was studying artwork personaly created by Ackbar, or collect by Bel. The others he had a whole plethora of work to draw from...

DocMoriarty seems to be saying that because he thinks Thrawn's fetish for alien art is stupid, Thrawn must be incompetent

I suppose he assumes that Thrawn gathers no military intel of any kind about his enemy, apart from these pieces of art?

And how does this change Thrawn's record of inspiring loyalty in his men and doing well with limited resources, the mark of a good leader and good officer?

Kirk may be a good leader of men, but the man has demonstrated glaring incompetence on more than one occasion. He tends to get himself into impossible situations through incompetence and then get himself out through quick thinking and sheer luck. Surviving your own grotesque fuck-up (ST2 is the finest example) is not much of a victory.

I think that one of Kirks strongest points was both his support team (Spock, Scotty, so forth) and the fact that he listened to them saved him on more than one time.

This might be off thread but if you read some of the Star Trek books (Like dreadnought) it paints Kirk in a much better light than the series and movies..I get confused if those are considered cannon or not...

Thanks

If Thrawn got ahold of ANY art from the various Trek races, they can kiss their sweet asses goodbye!

No, that is inconsequential. Thrawn has defeated unknown enemies before (ref: Visions of the Future; first contact with Palpy's personal army, and Thrawn trilogy; destroyed the home planet of an entire species 'The one time that studying a civilazations artwork and it lent me no insight to their psyche' or something along those lines.). The studying of the artwork just gives him a better or easier victory...

There's an old proverb...

"Get to know your enemy..."

...and Thrawn tried it in every possible way! Even by arts!!!

THrawn has ruthlessness at his advantage whereas Kirk would throw his body in the path of a speeding truck if it meant Spock wouldn't get an earache from all the explosions.

All but the cans are representitive of humans themselves. This shows the high value we put upon one another. Meaning that if you threaten to massacre a small colony if the government does not comply, they will crumple. Aliens with a different mindset would likely think differently.

And while different styles of art exist, they do so because on differences in time, technique, and artist isolation. When you have a culture with outstanding communication for thousands of years, they are going to be rather homoginized.

I must say that Thrawn has the whole physiciogical warfare thing in the bag. He could just freak out his enemies byoffering them better lives or using tatics that would freak Kirk out. He has, on several occassions, used this to his advantage. Also, I view Thrawn not in the standard Imperial view. He is almost humantarian sometimes. he doesn't always want to resort to BDZ unless totally nessecary. He is much more moderate in his treatment of lifeforms. However, his has been known to wipe out whole races without remorse, so it seems to be a touch and go thing.
