Meteor in Alberta?

Post by Broomstick »

I heard something in passing on the TV about a meteor in Alberta...? (I suppose if it's landed it's now a "meteroite") Did I imagine that or not?
A life is like a garden. Perfect moments can be had, but not preserved, except in memory. Leonard Nimoy.

Now I did a job. I got nothing but trouble since I did it, not to mention more than a few unkind words as regard to my character so let me make this abundantly clear. I do the job. And then I get paid.- Malcolm Reynolds, Captain of Serenity, which sums up my feelings regarding the lawsuit discussed here.

No, you weren't dreaming. The Bad Astronomer has something on it, with links to a couple of Canadian newspapers and CTV.

Make sure to check out the CTV link; some guy actually caught it on video, on his security camera.
"There are two novels that can change a bookish fourteen-year old's life: The Lord of the Rings and Atlas Shrugged. One is a childish fantasy that often engenders a lifelong obsession with its unbelievable heroes, leading to an emotionally stunted, socially crippled adulthood, unable to deal with the real world. The other, of course, involves orcs." - John Rogers

So when can we expect the first reports of alien parasites? :)

That police video is jaw-dropping.

No way, I saw a friend's update on Facebook stating he had seen a meteor, but thought nothing else of it. Reminds me of 2005, when there was a giant, slow-moving burning meteor looming over the Edmonton skyline on my 20th birthday. Incredibly eerie.

Goddamn that was beautiful. I only wish we had better footage of that.

What, nobody is concerned about me? Thanks guys.

Supposedly it landed to the south-east of Edmonton, so it would be fairly close to where I live.

Well, duh, you're posting about it. How badly could you be hurt? I admit that you could manage the feat with serious injuries to the majority of your body, but I doubt that posting on SDN would be among your highest priorities if that were the case.

As an order of magnitude calculation, the meteor had to be traveling at at least 11 km/sec (escape velocity from the Earth) before it hit the atmosphere due to Earth's gravity. Almost the entirety of that speed was probably burned off by air friction, meaning the meteor released energy of at least 60 MegaJoules/Kilogram.

I bet this has something to do with it:
Canadian Undead Incidents Rise - Amidst Cries of 'Cover-up'
Today's lead story: ZWN Field Reporter from Ottawa, Canada

The following report, wired to us today, not only shatters the long held belief that Canada is immune to the undead plague scourging the rest of the world, but also raises serious questions about the Government's role in the possible suppression of information.

Our reporter (Name withheld for safety reasons) was asleep in a modest apartment building in Ottawa, two days ago. "I was woken at about three in the morning to a commotion coming from upstairs. It sounded like fighting and non-stop screaming. At this point I jumped out of bed and got dressed. As I ran to my apartment door, I heard screams in our hallway and people running down the stairs. I wasn't sure what was going on so I looked through my eye hole and saw Mrs.(withheld) , the mother of the nice family who live upstairs running and shrieking down the stairs, all bloody, carrying their little boy in her arms."
This is the only known photo of the incident. Taken with our reporters cell phone moments before escaping.
Screams for help
What our reporter saw next was a horrific escalation of danger.
"Then I saw one of my other neighbors across the hall limp by, screaming and crying into a cell phone , "god help us, god help us!" When our reporter saw this reaction from his neighbor he was justifiably scared, and had second thoughts about opening the door. "because he's a big guy and an ex-soldier, so I figured if he's scared something's really wrong."

Glued to the chaos unraveling through the small key hole, he witnessed his neighbor collapse and fall down the stairwell. The little boys fall was cushioned by his mother's fall. Meanwhile, events continued to unfold through the relative safety of the key hole. The husband of the deceased neighbor "got up all jerkily and then slowly turned around and shuffled towards my door! He had a knife plunged right in his chest oozing this black stuff, his teeth and lips were all smashed out and he had blood all over himself. His eyes were the most horrifying things I Ever seen. He let out this god-awful moan and smashed himself against my door!"

Our reporter managed to escape via a second floor back window. However, he was able to witness the swift arrival of a SWAT team.

He was taken to hospital for standard quarantine and observation. Upon release,he discovered that the entire five floor apartment building had burned to the ground, despite there being no report of a fire during the whole incident.

He is in the process of accepting, through a lawyer, Government-issued compensation for his loss of dwelling.

The apartment building blazes throughout the night
Murder-suicide?
When ZWN tried to contact local authorities to confirm this report, we were informed that their had indeed been a fire at the apartment building, which sadly resulted in several losses of life. As for the deaths of our reporter's neighbors, Police declared them a 'Murder-suicide'.

Local citizens groups, spurred on by constant news coverage and internet blogging, are crying cover-up, and beginning to link this incident with several others throughout the city over a span of four months. In each case, the dwelling or other building where the occurrence happened was burned down by fire. No survivors were found............apart from our reporter. He says "I'm not sure why they let me go. Perhaps it was a mistake. Either way, I'm not hanging around to find out."

Why would Canada try to hide any incidents of necro-mortosis? We asked one expert. Phillip Backer, Professor of Social Studies and interactions, Canadian Institute of Science. "They would have a tremendous amount to lose if an outbreak of re-animation occurred. Not only from a medical concern, but also an economical one too. Look at the panic caused by the recent New Jersey incident. Those ripple effects are still being felt today. America thought it was immune, so too does Canada. Truth is, no where is completely safe. This is a plague for our century. This is our "black death""

Something about Libertarianism always bothered me. Then one day, I realized what it was:
Libertarian philosophy can be boiled down to the phrase, "Work Will Make You Free."

In Libertarianism, there is no Government, so the Bosses are free to exploit the Workers.
In Communism, there is no Government, so the Workers are free to exploit the Bosses.
So in Libertarianism, man exploits man, but in Communism, its the other way around!
