Why couldn't they be transfered from one theater to another, or be detached as support to various critical battlegrounds? I don't see the big deal here.

Yeah, me neither. In fact, I think that makes sense what with Anakin being hailed as the "Hero with No Fear". He probably got that title from showing up when the going was tough on critical battlegrounds and kicking ass with the 501st in tow.

Just cause you're on patrol in one area doesn't mean you can't respond to an emergency out side of your patrol area. So in no way does that show that wild space = outer rim or vice versa.

So they patrolled the Outer Rim, if anything, not Wild Space.
Isn't the Outer Rim huge?

Yes especially since it's a belt around the mid-rim, expansion region, inner rim and core IIRC. It separates the more civilized and populated sectors of the galaxy from the regions of space to under-populated and resource poor to be of any real interest. Places such as the "Unknown Regions", "Wild Space" and others. Place's where small native civilizations and pirate kingdoms abound.

The 501st would have access to long range warships like Venators and Accamalators. They can strike targets and carry armies across the galaxy in matter of hours. So maybe the 501st were some kind of mobile force called in to deal with enemies wherever needed ?
I have to tell you something everything I wrote above is a lie.

Yeah, it would be nice to see some of that. The fact that Leia would specify that Obi-Wan 'served' Organa at some point seems to indicate Obi-Wan went beyond the call of duty for the senator.
