[Stargate] Alternative to going through the gate
Is there any indication that it is possible to ring-transport through the gate?
I was thinking of keeping the gate in a completely seperate and sealed chamber and then facilitate any travel through the gate purely by non-physical means of transportation. Yes, it would only work with remote sites that also have ring transporters present. I am aware of that.
Also, what is the possibility of sending multiple transports through the gate at the same time? Or does a ring transporter always seek out the nearest receiver without the user being able to designate alternatives?

Re: [Stargate] Alternative to going through the gate
Let me put it this way; We've never seen the Asguard use transporters in conjunction with a Stargate, just pre and post transit.
If they weren't doing it, odds are, it's not happening.

I've been asked why I still follow a few of the people I know on Facebook with 'interesting political habits and view points'.

Re: [Stargate] Alternative to going through the gate
Ring transporter tech is constantly described as using a matter stream so it would only work out through out going wormholes. So I can't see a reason why it shouldn't.
Still the need for a ring transporter platform on the other side would make it next to useless.

Ring transporter tech is also described as exchanging the stuff between the platforms IIRC.

Not so much described as, that's what it does. It does so in the film.Jawawithagun wrote:Ring transporter tech is also described as exchanging the stuff between the platforms IIRC.
However, that's probably a safety procedure.
As I recall, Morgan le Fay left something like that, though with obelisks, running through a pre-determinated network.

It's also featured in episodes with the Tok'Ra, (one of the evacuation episodes, probably 'Exodus') and in 'Prometheus Unbound' so its not just a film thing.NecronLord wrote:Not so much described as, that's what it does. Re: [Stargate] Alternative to going through the gate
Just thinking that with exchanging stuff it has matter streams going both ways. So that wouldn't work with it only working with outgoing wormholes. There will always be stuff sent into an incoming wormhole.

Presumably that's why Morgan used a Sodan style monolith transporter - it's one way only - rather than rings, where some fool might be sitting on the recieving rings.

Doesn't an iris offer better security than this with fewer headaches?
I had a Bill Maher quote here. But fuck him for his white privelegy "joke".

Re: [Stargate] Alternative to going through the gate
Exactly this happened at the end of season nine. Vala attempted to ring-transport out of her doomed cargo ship, but the matter stream got sucked through the Ori supergate and she appeared in a ring platform in the Ori galaxy. So yes ring transport matter streams can go through gates in principle, though it might be prevented by safety mechanisms under normal conditions.

Wasn't that also an incoming wormhole ?Starglider wrote:Exactly this happened at the end of season nine. I was actually going to post about that. But I could remember exactly what happened. (nitpick: It was part way through season 9 in actually fact, when Vala filled in for Carter for six episodes)Starglider wrote:Exactly this happened at the end of season nine. Surely that supergate didn't open due to the cargo ship being in the way of the loop?

I don't think it ever opened before being destroyed, but I think they said something about the explosion causing a feedback that sent Vala to the Ori galaxy or something later on.Crazedwraith wrote:I was actually going to post about that. If I had something interesting, profound or incredibly stupid to say, it would go here.
Re: [Stargate] Alternative to going through the gate
Suffice to say, under an unusual set of conditions, it is possible for a ring transport to travel through an incoming wormhole. Whether these conditions are necessary for this to happen has never been tested, nor do I think the SGC should try. Keeping a ring platform anywheres on base is a potential security risk, seeing as how hostile forces can bypass the iris, if it works.

I'm fairly sure that exactly this was done in S10E6 "200" when (in a hypothetical scenario) the base was destroyed. The characters were beamed through the gate onto an asgard spaceship (it was never revealed where the spaceship was, other than the planet seen through the window is not earth). Whilst the sequence didn't actually happen, it was part of canon and everything that happened was technically feasible for the SGC and asgard at the time.

Firstly, the characters were supposed to be beamed to the Daedelus in orbit over earth, not an Asgard ship. This is shown in the very next scene.TheMinister wrote:I'm fairly sure that exactly this was done in S10E6 "200" when (in a hypothetical scenario) the base was destroyed. Second, the gate was explicitly unusable in that scenario; it was overloading and could not be dialed.
Thirdly, it was a patently ridiculous fantasy sequence and was no more related to reality than the Ewok-furlings, the zombies or for that matter the fucking puppets.

Re: [Stargate] Alternative to going through the gate
Ooops, my mistake- on closer inspection that appeared to be two seperate sequences that had gotten mentally mashed together in my head (not sure where the bit on the asgard ship is from).
I did rather like the puppets though. And they were only fucking in team america....
