Planet of the Apes Weekend!

Post by Elfdart »

I know it's almost over, but is anyone watching the Planet of the Apes marathon on Fox Movie Classics?

Not only are they showing all the movies, as well as the TV show in order, they also have features about the merchandising, which I remember quite well since I had a Cornelius doll (before they were called "action figures" :wanker: ). It's funny because George Lucas is usually credited (or blamed) for tie-ins, but Fox did it several years before.

I watched them all quite recently. Love the series.

They're actually planning on a remake of Conquest that may work as a prequel for Planet of the Apes.

As for Lucas, I thought it was more that the merchandising was huge for SW, as well as the deal he struck about it, which wasn't as true for POTA.

That's because Lucas created Star Wars and shopped it around to the studios. Planet of the Apes was created by several people (including the author of the book and Rod Serling) for Fox.

Oh, it was huge enough. POTA and its sequels (as well as M*A*S*H and Patton) are credited as the films that saved 20th Century Fox from bankruptcy, after the financial disaster of 1963's Cleopatra. And Fox owned the whole thing lock, stock, and barrel of monkeys.

The films. How much did the merchandising contribute to that?

I'm going to commit blasphemy. I've never seen the films (except the Burton remake, which I am assured is a travesty on the same level at the 1998 "Godzilla"). Are they really very good? I have been told that they are classics time and again, but that's about all I ever get. :P

Yeah, they're good, or at least the first one is. I've seen it a half a dozen times and the ending still haunts me.

The bit that sticks with me the most is when Taylor finds that they've lobotomised Landon.

I grew less interested with each sequel. Escape from the Planet of the Apes was a fun film, but the rest of the sequels weren't so hot.

I used to have some of the PotA Mego dolls when I was about 5-6 years old. I was always disappointed because Cornelius was too much of a wuss to take on General Ursa, so I had my Mego Spider-Man fight him instead. Or Mr. Spock zapped him with a phaser. Best of all, Action Jackson would really kick his ass. Mego: the original in cross-genre adventures!

I liked the first two movies, not so much the others. Escape was ok if not taken too seriously.
I especially liked how Beneath had the balls to kill *everybody*, first time I saw it I sat there wondering what the hell just happened.
If I had something interesting, profound or incredibly stupid to say, it would go here.

Oh man Megos are fucking so AWESOME...

And ED, man I don't need to watch 'em on TV. They are The Wench's favorite movies and we have them all in a sweet box set, which we watch every couple of months.

Also, does POTA have the best ending ever? I'm not just talking the reveal/twist, but the way they executed it; No music, no long drawn out scene, just some awesome over acting and a fade to black. That had to just knock people's socks off back in the day. :D
