Carbon Monoxide Poisoning

Post by Ted »

Our furnace is majorly fucked up right now.

It is turned off, yet it is on.

The CO detector is saying 90ppm.

How much is lethal?

Update: At 124ppm

Stop risking your life. Get off the net and call the fire department. Let them worry about it.

CO effects:

200 ppm: Slight symptoms (headache, discomfort) after several hours of exposure.

400 ppm: Headache and discomfort experienced within 2-3 hours of exposure.

1,000 -2000 ppm: Within 30 minutes, slight palpitations of the heart occur. Within 1.5 hours, there is a tendency to stagger. Within 2 hours, there is mental confusion, headache, and nausea.

2000-2500 ppm: Unconsciousness within 30 minutes.

>2500 ppm: Potential for collapse and death before warning symptoms are produced.

prolonged exposure to low levels of CO can be fatal.

Get the damn fire department on that fucking furnace NOW! When they're done ripping it out, shoot it a few times for trying to kill you.

Wong: if Ted doesn't resurface in the next short while could you refer his connection IP and other data to the emergency services? CO isn't something to be messed with and he's in deeper trouble than he seems to think.

I might have to. Ted, if you're reading this, get some fresh air and call somebody to work on your furnace.

He's been off the board since 22:10. It's now 22:27. Call 911.

I have Ted's address looked up thanks to the joys of online phone listings. Ted, get the hell out of your house before you keel over, that means NOW.

He's not on the board anymore. Give his address to Toronto Fire.

Give him a phone call. He doesn't appear to be logged in, which means he probably logged himself out rather than simply dropping to the floor. That's good, but I hope he's out of there. If you know his home address, that'd be a helluva lot faster than trying to work with his ISP to backtrack his IP address (it's dynamically assigned from their pool). Maybe you should call the police and tell them your concerns, and they can send a squad car over just to make sure everything is OK.

How long does it take for the sessions to time out? He last posted at 22:10 but he was still showing up in the active users list somewhere between five and ten minutes after that.

Gave him a ring and no one answered, which means they either got out or they're all passed out or dead.

Called him again to make sure, turns out he's fine and that it was some kind of false alarm. We now return to regular programming

The pessimist is either correct or pleasantly surprised.

If he's in a 124ppm CO environment he's not fine. Unless he's got some way of testing his CO meter and coming to the conclusion that it's haywire the least he should be doing is shutting off the gas to his furnace, opening a few windows to clear the air, and calling the HVAC repair folks to get the furnace fixed.

This brings up a rather intresting point, What use is a Monxided Detector if it does not give you a good easy to understand reading?

It's entirely possible someone in NASA said the same thing.

That was not a cheap attempt at a joke. Best to err on the side of caution when people's lives are at stake.... you can always laugh later if you were wrong.

Wow, never knew so many cared.

Anyways, yeah, my CO detector is fubar.

The repair dude came in, his couldn't detect any CO.

However, ours detected upto 145ppm.

Really weird.

Anyways, we're gonna get a new detector, and most likely a new furnace as well. Previously it DID go bad, gave off alot of CO, we stayed at grandparents, the piping was all fixed. But, we're gonna go new now.

The problem might develop only after a period of prolonged heavy use, such as that you find in winter.
