I got Hammered by a Virus

Post by Master of Cards »

I got hit hard by a virus and I have no idea what it is.

It redirects my googles to spam sites, stops all antivirus sites and programs from starting and might be a bot net because DALnet won't let me on. :finger:
It also wouldn't let me see pictures on some sites.

I have no idea where it came from. :banghead:

Any ideas? (Safe mode is out tried it)

You've got a virtumonde type virus. Nasty and the best way to get rid of it is to nuke your computer and start over.

Grab some anti-virus tools off an uninfected computer and load them up on a flash drive. Unplug your infected machine from the internet and boot it up into safe mode. Start running those tools.

Yes. Remove the HD, slave it to a second, uninfected machine and run a full scan on it with everything you can get your hands on.

Not that it is going to be much use to you. In the end, you're still more likely than not going to have to nuke the machine and start over since the infection is that bad. The only difference is that you will just have lost several hours of time for nothing.

Doing a backup of data and just reinstalling should be the quickest thing. As long as you have a separate Operating system and apps partition and have all relevant data on a different one, a reinstall should not be too hard or time consuming to do. That setup also allows you to make a clean install image of the OS partition, so if something happens again, just nuke and restore from image.

Does safe mode with command prompt or the recovery console work?

Do you have an install CD?
