Ironically linear shooters like Doom were MORE fun than shit like FEAR; nobody sat around said 'the level in Doom is not a real building' or 'poor map design' because they were obviosuly very 'gamey' levels and stuff, so nobody asked WHY IS THAT DEMON LIVING IN A CLOSET THAT OPENS WHEN YOU WALK PAST.

Sadly, they remade Doom, and they made it shit, boring and short and not just SPACE INVADERS WITH ZOMBIES. And I see what you mean with regard to the Halo 'oh lol here are the REAL enemies' thing.

Short? Doom 3 was not short. It takes a fair amount of time to play through.

I finished it in a single sitting once I got around to getting past how appallingly bad it was. The trip to delta is what, more than half the game? Terrible. Compare to 30 levels of crazy shooting action in the original with more intersting bosses than lol cyberdemon.

But hey Doom3 is just Halflife with a reskin, we all know that, so let's not rehash old news. Uninspired, Doom-in-name-only, etc etc. :)

I'm pretty morbid. I've actually gotten to the point where I hope the game market experiences another 'crash of 83' so it can essentially restart. Given how quickly gaming has been on the rise for the past decade, and the sudden closure and buyout of many known studios i'm thinking it might be on the way. Holy shit i'm onto something...something Peak-y.

On FC1 - The monkey trigens I could stomach...just random monster brought about genetic fuckery...in a setting not entirely unlike Jurassic Park but with more than five people and lots of guns, nothing particularly special...then suddenly there's big hulking humanoids with rocket launchers attached to their arm who can take more damage than vehicles...in the head, which pretty much ruined everything.

I wouldn't be surprised if something like that would happen, although I think its unlikely. People learn the hard way, especially people in business.

Sorry, I didn't see UT2k4 in the list of games to give an opinion on... :banghead:

Though I'd have rated even the original UT engine over the Cry Engine, because a) it had a hell of a lot more wow-factor in it's time than Far Cry did and b) people could actually do stuff with it.

That isn't really directed at you; the UE2.0 engine gets absolutely no love (particularly compared to the pile of shit that is Source) even though it basically defined an entire generation of games AND was scalable and easy to develop for. We all remember how many mods decided to develop for CryEngine or Source and then faded away because it was too stupid, or even moved from UE2.0 to the 'better' engines and then never released anythign. How many non-mods have used Source again? Oh yeah that's right like zero. Whoops. :)

And yeah, I agree. I could never understand why people shat their drawers over Q3 when UT just blasted it in every conceivable way, from interface to gameplay to the engines power. UT2.0 engine was just fucking insane - and lets not forget that Epic gives us amazing free shit like U2 XMP and the like.

Yes, but I doubt that if you heard a light click at night, you would immediately think "Suppressed weapons! Attack!". It's more to make it sound less like a gunshot than keep you from hearing it. That's the reason suppressors are still used.

The second half of your post makes the first irrelevant. Anyway, the night never gets very dark and cover doesn't work, so a badguy just scanning the horizon generally spots you unless you're using terrain.

Yeah, now that I use IEDs I've found that I can really fuck up check-points without a problem. Sneaking in and around one is no problem (even before I had the camo suit) and setting IEDs on big propane tanks and their vehicles is great. And now I can get the fuck out of Dodge (but not too far out - only 30-40m, otherwise your explosives mysteriously disappear) before initiating and pick off whoever is left with the Dragunov.

Huh? Unless the voice acting is radically different in the PC version, every goddamn soldier in the game apart from your buddies/a handful of important NPCs are African. Actually, scratch that - every soldier is a fucking South African, to the point where you think the developers were taking the piss.

As for the rest....surely this thread is the perfect example of why gamers are impossible to please. Fuck, you're telling me that certain elements of the game break realism? Shit, next thing you know the game will have you driving over most of a country in ten minu - oh, wait. In the end Far Cry 2 had pretty ambitious aims and largely succeeded. The moral dimension to the story (and the multiple tips to Apocalypse Now) combined with the freedom of the maps make it awesome, IMO. It's not perfect, but what game is? Way better than corridor shooters like Halo 3.

Well, he's talking about the potential buddies. As for the mercs, there's various African languages for most, but I've heard one or two speaking Spanish and Italian.

For your reference, the difference between supersonic and subsonic rifle rounds used with a suppressor. More than just a click, either way.

This game would be as close to perfect as possible without many of the complaints levied here. All it would have taken is more beta testing, over a wider audience perhaps, and many of the minor stuff would cease to have been a problem. We have complained be cause awesome, intelligent, and entertaining games and ideas have not reached their potential, or have been outright ruined by developer haste or oversights here and there. What it boils down to is gamers are very easy to please when games are released in a stable, complete, and free of utterly retarded game mechanics state.

It's not necessarily the fault of the development. Publishers always want the beta testing phase shortened as much as possible. They are the ones signing the pay checks, their word is final.

Also, there is a difference between beta-testing and play-testing.

No, they're not. Far Cry 2 stands above several other games in quality but you will still find plenty of whiners over its forum. Most gamers are whiners, no matter what.

By the way, if you know how really would the game be better, you should go and try to make one. Then come back and talk about utterly retarded mechanics.

Far Cry 2 stands out in quality this year. It's not perfect, but I just don't see the "utterly retarded game mechanics" you talk about.

Super respawning checkpoints, crazy damage amounts, etc etc etc. All could have been alleviated with better planning, and would have made the game measurable better. I'm not claiming to be able to make a game, but the same line of thought applies to you. Am I wrong to demand a higher standard?

No, not with better planning, but with more playtesting to figure out that these are issues (frankly, I didn't notice them, even respawning checkpoints and I've rarely used stealth).

Really, development of anything is like that, particularly when it involves creativity. Publishers want their products out as soon as possible to make more money. Developers want to try out every idea and feature they have, polishing it till it shines. One party has power over the other and it isn't the developers that have that power.

Since I'm in the middle of the game, I've avoided reading the thread: can anyone tell me how to use the mortar? I can only seem to launch smoke shells.
