I point out on my page that I disagree with the guy's alarmism, but it's still useful to do a quickie port-scan. Gibson's problem is that he thinks his site is worth much more than that.
I can say that after turning various services and ports on and off, GRC does accurately report whether a port is open, closed, or unresponsive. But I wouldn't follow his recommendations on Internet security; he is an alarmist and offers little in the way of solutions besides "get firewall software", which is a no-brainer.

All stealths here, and I'm using the Windows Xp built in Firewall option...which thank god, saved myself and my roomate from those ultra-fucked Windows Messenger pop-ups that were the death of at least 3 Diablo II characters for him...because they appear ontop of everything (you can't see them in D2, but you hear the noise...and eve if you don't click on the area it's in and click anywhere else, it still minimizes the game.)
After a little bit of research that I actually got from a warning FROM one of those pop-ups, I was able to stave them off.

Xerxes, this is off-topic, but have you ever read Psalms 137:9... Manson took the verse completely out of context...

About windows messenger:
Did you know you could disable it through it's preferences setting? And if you're talking about "messenger" which is a separate thing in 2k and up, you can disable that through services.
After everything I've done to XP's windows messenger, the only time it ever comes up now is when I run outlook express.

Well beyond the firewall and getting an all green results on the tests that should be enough at any rate, no?Darth Wong wrote:I can say that after turning various services and ports on and off, GRC does accurately report whether a port is open, closed, or unresponsive. All of the settings that antispy can do is acceseble in xp thro system manager and the policy editor.
Give it a try and see if you like it.
About Steve Gibson
Good site to start learning some about networking but he is not the messias that he thinks he is.
Also he treats security as a solution that can be fixed with a product.

ICMP have some dangerous flaws in it. (ping of death and a bunch of others)

I have read the passage, and I fail to see how it's out of context. Actually, considering the OT's other passages in regards to the killing of children, it doesn't surprise me, and doesn't seem far off from god's pollicies.StimNeuro wrote:Xerxes, this is off-topic, but have you ever read Psalms 137:9... Dude, you're going about the wrong way to solve that problem. What you do is login to an administrator account (if you're not using one already), and go into your Admin Tools. Double-click on services, scroll down to "Messenger". Double-click on that, hit the Stop button and set it to "disabled". Click the OK button.Lord_Xerxes wrote:All stealths here, and I'm using the Windows Xp built in Firewall option...which thank god, saved myself and my roomate from those ultra-fucked Windows Messenger pop-ups that were the death of at least 3 Diablo II characters for him...because they appear ontop of everything (you can't see them in D2, but you hear the noise...and eve if you don't click on the area it's in and click anywhere else, it still minimizes the game.)
Thats it.

Thanks for the help/advice. But just for safties sake, I'll keep the firewall up anyway. Probably better off that way.

The last firewall I want to use is a Microsoft one. However, if they would make cable/DSL routers like they make their input devices, it could be a different story.Lord_Xerxes wrote:Thanks for the help/advice.
