Smoking

Post by Shrykull »

Why do people do it? Just can't see why anyone would want to cause themselves 15 diseases including cancer, life is short don't make it shorter. And yes, I can honestly say I've never taken a drag of anything in my life, though I did once smell some car exhaust up close to see how it smelled. I wonder if there's anyone who smokes two cigarrettes at the same time, two between thier fingers- that they just can't get enough flavor with one. that would be funny in a dismal kind of way.

Smoking makes no sense to me. But then again, alot of things in life make no sense to me.
The most basic assumption about the world is that it does not contradict itself.

People smoke because it feels good. The only problem is that smoking is one of the many things that feel good that are harmful to your health.

The only drug that I use is Ritalin, which is prescribed for my ADHD. I've never smoked, abused a prescription drug, or taken any sort of illegal drug.

I've never smoked, there's nothing like seeing cigarettes slowly rob the health and eventually the life someone you love to keep you away from that stuff.

Don't smoke. Main reasons :

1) Don't have the money to.
2) My stamina/health is bad enough as it is.
3) Was never any pressure to, and it simply doesn't occur to me to start anyway.
4) I absolutely hate the smell of cigarette smoke. It seems that I have an extremely sensitive nose in this regard.

Don't really understand smokers. I've tried cicarettes once, they taste like crap, are addictive, are bloody expensive, ruin your health and in general I really don't see what is gained by smoking them.

Smoking does not inevitably lead to ill health, though the chances are pretty high. Still, those people who smoke are willing to take those risks for the momentary enjoyment derived from smoking. Short sighted, but then again, we are talking about people.

I don't smoke, because I don't even want to increase my health risks. Furthermore, as others have pointed out, it costs money to support the habit.

I am know to partake in the smoking of Wacky Backy. I am allergic to tobacco and am forced to smoke my weed through a pipe. I have a wee modified smirnoff vodka mini bottle for a pipe. Weed is a better drug than alcohol. I think booze should be banned and weed made legal. If you don't believe me just listen to some of Bill Hicks rants.

I don't put anything in my body that alters my perceptions. That's pretty much my rule of thumb.

As for smoking, I used to be fairly harsh to them, mainly because my parents sought to teach me the 'don't do drugs' lesson via insisting that addicts of any kind were weak-minded dolts. I don't begrudge them that.

I was fairly active a few years ago with the campaign to get Ottawa to be a no-smoking city, that is, not in any public building, restaurant, or bar. We succeeded. I can't say I'm dissappointed, regardless of how many people yell that it's their right to blow smoke onto my dinner.

I remember the direction that the other Smoking thread went in, and I'm hoping that this thread doesn't go there.

i smoke pot because it´s a load of fun.

i smoke the occasional cigarette when i´ve got a lot of work to do. it´s a good(well maybe a bad one but it works) excuse for taking a brake.

i smoke cigarettes when i´m out in a bar drinking. whenever i drink for some, smoking is a lot more fun than sober. i also like bars that are full of smoke. a bar without smoke is not a bar. a bar is a place where all the bad habbits come out.

i agree with probably everybody else that cigarettes are stupid. but i do stupid stuff once in a while.

Moderate drinking (one glass or less per day) has never been shown to be harmfull. I would agree that the same is true for weed. Although, if you could suggest a means by which an alcohol ban would actually work, I'd probably support it.

I adhere to this myself rather strongly. But for alcohol, I realized that moderate drinking doesn't alter my perceptions. My current average of two glasses per week probably causes more good than harm.

I voted for crack so that, like all polls, you could have 4% margin of error.

Seriously, though, smoking can relieve stress. Personally, I find it gross, but I'm not going to fault someone for doing it. I don't think it makes you a bad person, per se, because everyone is ultimately responsible for his own actions.

On the topic:

I've taken perhaps three puffs on a cigarette, which confirmed the horrible taste.

I've taken a number of puffs from a Cuban cigar, just to see what the hype is about. Definitely a better taste, but its still an easy decision not to smoke these either.

Been offered a lot, but have never tried weed. I doubt I ever will.

Never touch the stuff. The air is poluted enough as it is and I have enough health problems already.

People usually get started from peer pressure in High School or from imitating their parents. Then ~20-40 years later they usually curse the day they ever picked up the infernal things.

An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure.

Thank you for fucking up the poll and admitting it, dumbass.

Xerxes: since this is more of a poll and not a debate (particularly one about laws and tax, like that one was), I don't think there'll be any problems.

Never tried, never will. For those I love it pains for me to see them light up. For those I don't care for, I can only enjoy the irony that they spend extortinate amounts on sticks of diced plant that will eventually put them through a painful death unless they engage their brain.

Smoking is a total contradiction to living, I know smokers that go to kick-box aerobics every morning to get fit. To get fit! Then they fucking light up! I tried asking why they do this and they (two girls in my dorm) almost bit my head off.

Would you take a bath in clean soapy water and immediately after go and jump into a sewer? Because this is what they are doing essentially.

One day I was making copies. It was from a rather large book, so I had the cover open. The secretary exclaimed "Don't leave the cover open! You'll get cancer!"

Another co-worker and I both started laughing hysterically. At first she thought it was because she was wrong... then she realised the hypocrisy, as she was a heavy smoker...

The good news is that she eventually quit :)

I smoked pretty regularly last semester, but I am slowly cutting down. Mainly, I smoke at parties and when I'm drinking. Some nights, I'll just have a cigarette before I go to bed. Sometimes I'll have one after work, but I'm really trying to limit myself now to no more than two a day, and I want to go at least a couple days a week without smoking at all. I didn't smoke at all yesterday.

The big problem is that I enjoy it, and I don't want to quit, but I need to. I smoke clove cigarettes, which taste a whole lot better, have a lighter smoke and give a better high, but are probably worse for you. And you get a nice social buzz from smoking in a group and just chatting with other people. There's a whole lot more than just the physical addiction to nicotine. In my case, I'm not physically addicted; it's a slight psychological addiction, where there are certain situations where I want to smoke. If I'm not in those situations, I don't feel the urge for a cigarette.

You'd be surprised at how even the smallest action gives a smoker a psychological buzz, such as actually lighting the cigarette with a Zippo lighter, which is part of it for me.

Oh, and I smoke weed. In fact, I had some absolutely awesome shit Thursday night.

From a former smoker, there are many reasons why you pick up the habit:

Peer pressure
Wanting to be a grown up
The calming a buzzy effects of nicotine

And in the immortal words of Norm McDonald, "I started smoking because I thought I would look cool. And you know what? I did look cool  "

It all comes down to starting for your friends' sake, and then getting hooked in a horrible addiction, which is not only stupid but expensive and filthy as hell. Quitting tobacco is one of the hardest things I have ever done in my life.
