Since I'm in the middle of the game, I've avoided reading the thread: can anyone tell me how to use the mortar? I can only seem to launch smoke shells.

Also, how many Jackal tapes are there?

hit the reload button to change from smoke to explosive. Really, it's only useful for playing with. It's too slow and too hard to aim.
