Re: David Walliams for the 11th Doctor?
Walliams, mostly known from Little Britain, did a serious psychological thriller, Capturing Mary, for BBC-2 last year, so he could well have the acting chops for the role if he's handled properly in the scriptwriting —better chance of that happening with Steven Moffat taking over as producer.

I actually consider the casting of comedians in dramatic roles like this (especially like this - Who does have a lot of comedy long term, afterall) to be a good thing. It is generally harder to make someone laugh than to cry, so if you can do the first, then with a little work and effort and some good writing, requirements for everyone, you can do the latter.
Generally speaking, comedians cast in such roles tend to, from what I've seen, do better than those who have minimal experience working comedies and stand up.

Re: David Walliams for the 11th Doctor?
To be fair RTD has not consistantly fucked up with characterization and utilizing talanted actors well, with Bernard Cribbins as Wilfred being one of the divisive Season Four's triumphs amongst the overblown and repetitive silliness. While Little Britain has fixed my image of Walliams too much, he has played lesser known dramatic roles in the late 90s and early 00s, so I wouldn't mind him turning up in the show.Patrick Degan wrote:Walliams, mostly known from Little Britain, did a serious psychological thriller, Capturing Mary, for BBC-2 last year, so he could well have the acting chops for the role if he's handled properly in the scriptwriting —better chance of that happening with Steven Moffat taking over as producer.
My personal choice for an older Doctor is David Threlfall, since I'm starting to get bored of a youngish and hyperactive Doctor that we've had for almost four years.

Re: David Walliams for the 11th Doctor?
I hadn't really thought of it that way, and it does seem rather bizarre for the otherwise rather conservative Romana to do something as capricious as waste one to six of her regenerations in that manner. I've heard a couple of the novels have tried to explain this scene but without doing too spectacular a job of it.NecronLord wrote:The stupidity of that regeneration is not in that she could shape it (though there was none of the usual pyrotechnics and disorientation). It's that as far as we can tell, Romana threw away one of her lives for the sheer sake of being bored and raising a chuckle. It had already been established that time lords had a limited number of lives.Ryushikaze wrote:Granted, the way the regeneration was handled was probably a bit too humor oriented, along with the rest of the serial, but Time Lords having a say in their regeneration wasn't without precedent even then. Troughton's Doctor was offered a choice at the end of Troughton's run, though he rejected all of them. Presumably whatever let them shape his regeneration was at work in the Romana Regeneration.
Hell, as far as it's presented in the episode, she used up about six in taking on random different forms to adjust to taste.
It was Adams' first serial as script editor, and it shows. Fortunately, his later work in the series was immensely superior.
I guess the best explanation is that it's possible to change your appearance without wasting a regeneration if you have access to the proper machinery on Gallifrey, but I think even that raises some strange questions.

I wouldn't mind a more ruthless and heavy handed Doctor.

Heh, I dont see that happening.Enigma wrote:I wouldn't mind a more ruthless and heavy handed Doctor.
The original introduction of Tennant had the idea of him being 'ruthless and heavy handed' with the 'You only get one chance'.
Any more heavy handed than that would be pushing it to pushing the button to wipe out the Daleks like in Journey's End or Bad Wolf but the new series just hasnt got the balls to do it.
It is always someone else that does it and then he goes mental at them like in Journey's End or Rose has to come in and save the day because the Doctor is the 'hero' and the 'hero' cant do that stuff. Now, look to Torchwood on the otherhand...
The latest Christmas Special had him try the 'Last chance to stop being a murderous prick, no seriously stop or I will kill you, STOP... right YOU MADE ME DO THIS !!!'
This is what he did with the Sontarns until someone had to do it for him, which TOTALLY wasnt predictable but nevermind. The Doctor already toes a pretty fine moral line the way he operates and to be honest, if he started becoming ruthless and heavy handed the writers wont be able to pass off the stories and plots they have been doing so far.
At the very least, I would be expecting a ruthless Doctor to start carrying a fucking gun by now or actually start KILLING people A.K.A TSCC Cameron style in the bowling alley. WITHOUT having to be backed into a corner first so that the 'has no choice' cliche as a defense dosent work.
Re: David Walliams for the 11th Doctor?
But seriously, I actually like the idea of Robert Lindsay taking on the role. He has a very Doctorish feel about him, and he looks more open and friendly than Walliams.

I wouldn't mind Lindsay either, except for it being quite a challenge not see him him as a bumbling dentist.
I wonder if Alan Davies might still be in the running. I saw the Jonathan Creek special last night and he really does that mystery-hunting weirdo part quite well.

Re: David Walliams for the 11th Doctor?
By the looks of it, most of the press have been trying to predict what kind of actor RTD is likely to cast, either forgetting or not realising that it's actually Steven Moffat and Piers Wenger selecting the new Doctor. Unless it turns out to be Patterson Joseph (who looks like the runaway favourite at the moment), I have a feeling the new Doctor's identity will surprise quite a lot of people.

Re: David Walliams for the 11th Doctor?
I'm hoping that it isn't that Matt Smith fellow - vastly too young, in my opinion. The other possible contender is Ejiofor Chiwetel, AKA The Assassin/Agent Fellow From Serenity, though I imagine he's somewhat too 'Big Name' for the Beeb to be able to afford him for more than a year.

Chiwetel would be awesome if he could be afforded. Still, we shall soon see. I'm on a train ready for Huntingdon, so keep me posted on here. Streaming TV is a tad shit on the move.

I really could not be arsed... I'm finding out from here or BBC News, can't be doing with half an hour of teasing and non-news to spin out a 30 second announcement.Dartzap wrote:Me thinks its going to be half an hour of back slappery before we find out....

I'm quite saddened they've not gone for and older actor with some gravitas but its obvious they don't want to lose the 'I just tune in because David Tennant's so gorgeous' audience.

I'd sooner have settled for Fielding himself. Time will tell, of course, but... come on.Dartzap wrote:Aye, its Matt Smith, a poor man's Noel Fielding from the looks of him

Re: David Walliams for the 11th Doctor?
He doesn't look that bad in the pictures I suppose. Since I've never seen anything he's been in I will just have to wait and see. Although I am vaguely worried about the comments about him having a 'doctor-ness' about him. I hope he's not going to be a totally retread of Tennat's Doctor in style. That constant maniacness got rather grating after a while. The BBC Article wrote:
BBC NEWS
New Doctor actor is youngest ever
Matt Smith has been named as the actor who will take over from David Tennant in Doctor Who - making him the youngest actor to take on the role.
At 26, Smith is three years younger than Peter Davison when he signed up to play the fifth Doctor in 1981.
Smith will first appear on TV screens as the 11th Doctor in 2010.
He was cast over Christmas and will begin filming for the fifth series of Doctor Who in the summer. Tennant is filming four specials in 2009.
Smith was named as Tennant's replacement in Saturday's edition of Doctor Who Confidential on BBC One.
He said: "I've got this wonderful journey in front of me where I've got this six months to build this Time Lord - and that's such an exciting prospect."
Piers Wenger, head of drama at BBC Wales, said that as soon as he had seen Smith's audition he "knew he was the one".
"It was abundantly clear that he had that 'Doctor-ness' about him," he said. "You are either the Doctor or you are not."
Wenger said a broad range of people had been auditioned, but they had not set out to cast the youngest Doctor.
Smith's TV debut was in the 2006 adaptation of Philip Pullman's The Ruby in the Smoke, which starred former Doctor Who companion Billie Piper as Sally Lockhart.
He has also acted opposite Piper in the follow-up, The Shadow in the North, and in ITV2's Secret Diary of a Call Girl.
In 2007, he had a leading role in BBC Two's political drama Party Animals, in which he played a parliamentary researcher.
Smith's stage work has included stints with theatre companies such as the Royal Court and National Theatre. His West End debut was in Swimming With Sharks opposite Christian Slater.
He was born in Northampton in 1982 and studied drama and creative writing at the University of East Anglia.
Creative team
Tennant said in October that he would stand down from the show after filming four special episodes in 2009.
The star is due to begin shooting the first special this month, just weeks after surgery on his back forced him to pull out of a London run of Hamlet.
The last of these special episodes is expected to run in early 2010.
With a new creative team in place for the 2010 series led by executive producers Steven Moffat and Piers Wenger, the casting of the Doctor was the first job to be completed before scripts could be finalised.
Doctor Who began in 1963, and seven actors played the Doctor before the show was dropped in 1989.
After a TV movie in 1996 - starring Paul McGann - the TV series returned in 2005 with Christopher Eccleston in the lead role. Tennant took over the same year.

Well, looks like Patterson Joseph's gonna go down in history alongside Ken Campbell as "The guy everyone thought would be the Doctor, but turned out not to be."
I'm not really encouraged or discouraged by this casting, because frankly I'd never heard of the guy before today.

Shit, the guy's a mere three years older than me!
But Steven Moffat will be at the helm to accomodate him as well as RTD did with Christopher Ecclecakes, and while Matt does seem at least seven years too young for role he does have the chops, he did mightily impress me in a short scene from In Bruges where he played a youthful 1970s gangster who casually strolled into a police station and decapitated a corrupt police officer (which was sadly deleted from the final cut).

Meh. I'm personaly not feeling anything but apathy towards this guy. I've spent a while looking him up on the web, but I haven't really found anything to suggest how he'll do in the role. Still, here's hoping for the best.
At least Moffat will be head writer for the next season, so that's some good news there. With luck, he can help integrate this guy into the role.

Apathy here. Although the thought of Noel Fielding being the Doc instead is amusing me. Guess it all lies on Moffat now until we really see this guy acting.
