Galactic Civilizations 2 vanilla vs Dark Avatar expansion

Post by Sarevok »

I have Galactic Civilizations II : Gold Edition. All this time I had been blissfully playing Dark Avatar expansion thinking this is Galciv with a positive tweak here and there. Then I suddenly read about the changes to original game Dark Avatar made. Now I am not sure if Dark Avatar is better. Dark Avatar introduced asteroid mines with magic teleporters. Then it has the "Super ability" aspect which seems to be unbalancing. Plus the reduced number of planets available to colonize does not help either.

Can someone help make up my mind about which I should play ?
I have to tell you something everything I wrote above is a lie.

I don't know I liked the original having played it for over six months before I played DA.

Oh man, those stupid fucking asteroids! Could have had commerce warfare/freighters, but NAH teleporters! :D

I don't remember that much distinction between DL and DA, but TOA is way better than both (and lets you turn off the retarded super abilities, evens out the early games etc). I'm not sure how much of the later functionality was back-incorporated into DA, but I'd be surprised if the newsest versions don't let you turn off super abilities.

Weren't the super abilities sorta-balanced with the racial traits? I mean the Yor have the worst super ability but their racial traits are just ridiculous (they start with +20% production for everything, +30% soldiering, +100% loyalty, and a whole bunch of other stuff, BEFORE you factor in customization points-sure that makes up for their tech tree being... idiosyncratic, but still.)

TOA had unique faction tech trees, which was unbelievably awesome, though.

I haven't played in a while, but I'm pretty sure I could turn off the supers in DA when I played.
