Battlefront III: Obi-Wan Kenobi goes Sith

Post by SAMAS »

If you didn't know, a company named Free Radical was working on the third game in the Battlefront series. Unfortunately, they died, and the project has been given over to another company.

But art released reveals that Free Radical was working on an interesting twist in the game: What if Obi-Wan Kenobi fell to the Dark Side?

Kotaku has the pictures.

It's an interesting idea, but one that should be firmly non-continuity, alternate universe. Unfortunately, they're notoriously permissive and probably would see nothing wrong with having Obi-Wan be a Sith for no real reason and somehow have him "get better" before ANH. It'd be quite typical of them.

I don't think Kenobi can fit in as a Sith- there are only 2, remember AND he hates them. Dark Jedi? Maybe- Sith? Never.

Lots of people use the term interchangeably - heck, even Darth Tyranus & Vaders apprentices are called "Sith".
And then there is the whole mess during the Old Republic...

But other than that, you are right.

And Obi-Wan as a Sith? Unimaginable.
Even as a Dark Jedi (or even a little darker) it does not really fit the character.

Ventress was called a Sith? When? In TCW, she's called an assassin. Dooku himself denies her the name when he meets her. She's also called a mere "Dark Jedi" in the RotS novel.

There are only two Dark Lords at any given time in the Banite/Ordinal Sith sect, but there can be minor Sith ("acolytes" is the term they typically use; if I recall correctly, Ventress was called so in The Essential Guide to the Force). There is no contradiction; the Sith Lords proper abide by the Rule of Two, but they have lower-level flunkies who are not fully part of the Order. This is also how Palpatine held his later large Dark Side menagerie.

Apart from that, yes, the idea of a Sithian Ben Kenobi is retarded. It would probably have been worse than the fiasco that was the Force Unleashed storyline.
"But there's no story past Episode VI, there's just no story. It's a certain story about Anakin Skywalker and once Anakin Skywalker dies, that's kind of the end of the story. There is no story about Luke Skywalker, I mean apart from the books."

The idea is interesting, but the follow throw is LAME.
I'm a Sith now, so I will randomly wrap leather around my arms and legs!! SHOES?! Who needs shoes!!

well, from the concept art this dark side version apparently killed krayt dragons and wampa's during his 'travels', so it could be presumed that the dark side version apparently did some traveling rather than stayed on tatooine, killing beasts and taking parts of them as trophies, hence the "randomly wrapped leather"

perhaps instead of the old hermit in the desert, he did the wandering hermit bit, which would keep one from having money for.. you know, clothes.

So he traveled to Hoth and Tattooine? LAME. Oh right... EU writers only think there are Krayt Dragons, Wampas, Banthas, womp rats, rancors and mynocks in the entire galaxy. And why the fuck would DS Kenobi even go to fucking Tattooine again?

Riiiigght. Because the Sith/Dark Jedi always have trouble acquiring wealth.

P.S. I know you aren't actually suggesting these ridiculous things. :P

Eh, I try not to look too deeply into stuff like "secret" or "alternate" characters. It's like the alternate ending in the Revenge of the Sith game where Anakin kills the Emperor: cute, maybe fun visually, but means jack when it comes to the big stuff. So... who knows, Dark Side Obi might have been all evil cause he was forced to kill Anakin, and becomes some weird wandering Dark Angel of Death type.

All I know, and care about, is that I think the design looked somewhat interesting. :)

Plus, I'm sad the game got canned. The ability to fly from space onto the planet and vice versa would have been fun.

When I try and imagine a fallen Kenobi, the best I can come up with is "gibbering lunatic". Literally a crazy old wizard who has wandered far off the reservation but still clings to his delusions of Knighthood. I can see him lose his sanity, but not his faith or fealty. I just cannot see him willfully embrace the dark side, let alone the Sith. As Tharnow said, it just doesn't fit the character.

its probably just a negative game consequence, but the lightside ending would be the canonical one.

Obi Wan would make a pretty good Sith actually, he has great reason to hate them, and hating them is the path to becoming them. They killed his master right in front of him, they took his apprentice, his friends etc. obi Wan, the "obedient one" never strayed from the jedi path, and what did it get him? No woman, no family, lots of dead friends. Whose to say after a few years in exile he wouldn't resent having to guard the son of the student who betrayed him and continues to hunt him. Whose to say he wouldn't twist his philosophy of rigid self discipline and obedience into a desire to control everything and everyone around him, and force THEM to be obedient?

Although, as old obiwan's "Special lightsber move" was to turn slowly around in a circle while looking at the floor, he might need to brush up on his dueling or something.

Free Radical died? Shit. I liked Timesplitters.

And that old Obi design wasn't that great. Being evil means you can't look afte your clothes or nails anymore? Still the long beard, bald head looks quite good. like some kind of evil monk or something.

Erm the game isn't "canned," it just got handed to the people who did the PSP battlefront game.

I'm pretty sure the footage of the ground-space transition is from the current version of the game

P.S. "shriveled wiry frame" and then the artist makes his forearms more massive than his head. Yeah. Really bad follow through.

I see some people coming up with really good explanations for Obi-Wan turning to the dark side... but you know the guys making this game are going to have a much worse idea if they choose to explain it at all.

The only way I can accept this is if it's in one of the non-canonical plays through the game. "You fucked up and now Obi-wan has gone darkside! Way to go, IDIOT!"

No, that tech is dying with Free Radical- for now, of course. They're going to use a cutscene instead, apparently.

The only way I could see it working in canon is if it's some sorta thing where he faces his darkside in some hole on tatooine. Sorta like luke did in the cave on dagobah, only he has to face up to some sort of projection of his guilt over anakin's fall and the Republic's demise.

And even then I doubt the game developers could pull it off well.

While at first glance I thought the idea was interesting, the more I have thought about it though, I absolutely can not accept it, even as a non-canon "oops".

Obi-Wan was the epitome of what every Jedi wanted to become. He was compassionate without attachment. He was powerful but in a defensive capacity. He was mindful of the future but kept himself grounded in the moment. He was wise, but not without realizing he could still learn. He was an excellent leader, while still being an excellent soldier.

His only draw back was that he was slightly arrogant. But seriously, if watching his Master die, watching his best friend and student turn to the dark side, slaughter Jedi and destroy the Jedi Order, forcing him to be an outcast hermit DID NOT turn him to the dark side... what exactly is going to.

No. This is a retarded idea all around.
