I grabbed his name from your initial list of Soyuz astronauts. I'd sort of forgotten you'd also written a comprehensive program launch schedule...

If Grissom is flying though, that means that during this mission there will be three San Doradan citizens in space at the same time (one in the Soyuz capsule, two aboard the Silver Streak). That's gotta be a record. I wonder how Uslov feels about that ;).

CmdrWilkens wrote:I think the biggest thing is that it would be hard to ret-con anything related to the existing space programs. So even though the IRT was, IIRC, rather opposed to overflight provisions I don't think ret-conning in a shoot down or attempted shoot down would work. Outside of that I don't think there woudl be too much that I would automatically say would be off limits (and in fact I've rather tried to act as if the IRT is still there as for example the Caymans incident is partially about maintaining commercial ties to the IRT since direct comemrce would still be sketchy).
I wouldn't have anything like shootdowns or whatnot. Given the serious economic climate I could put in that IRT space development was pretty much put on hold in favor of other things (so while we may have a general expendable rocketry programme, anything reusable like DynaSoar was cancelled).

As for fusion weapons, Steve suggested that I, ahem "come back in with a bang."

Syria

Syria became a protectorate of the Byzantine Empire after the Second Great War. The Syrian Caliphate, despite having lost its Egyptian holdings, still commanded a vast land stretching from Damascus to Baghdad in Mesopotamia, to Cestiphon in Persia. Much of the land is in general desert, and most of the population is centered around the main cities of the country. With a population of 60 million, and GDP of 750 million (essentially, a Kingdom with Principality economy. Any objections, raise your hand), the country is considered Second World.

Unlike their Egyptian breathen who drifted into Japanistani orbit, the Syrians drifted into Byzantine orbit, and was the most Westernised of the two. With Byzantine aid, they grew a domestic industry as well as reformed their education system. Many of their brightest headed to Byzantium for further study. The economy has grown substantially since the end of the Great War, in part with Byzantine financial assistance, and annual tribute.

The current Sultan, Ṣalāḥ ad-Dīn Yūsuf ibn Ayyūb IV, is a progressive ruler, who has slowly steered his population towards secular rule over the last two decades. He has however, not forsaken his title of Caliph of the Islamic World and is a God-fearing man who has tried to show a good example to his subjects. He is regarded a personal friend of the Byzantine Emperor, and both rulers exchange visits yearly. The Sultanamet of Damascus was a gift of the last Byzantine Emperor, and financed with Byzantine Solidi to cement the friendship of the two empires and a final laying to rest of old grudges.

Currently, the Syrian military is about the size of the real world Iraq, with T-80UM2s and T-72B dominating the army, and the navy is composed of frigates and corvettes, and a few destroyers and submarines, while the Air Force flies MiG-29s and Su-27s. While not as advanced as first world navies, the Syrian military is strong enough to repel any invader, and to make them pay twice for every blood spilled.

At least us dirty commies are good for something. :D

Guys, I'm coming back to the game too. In a part-time, drive by posting sort of way. I still don't have time to play full time(At least not until February, and the end of my Simulator training.), but I'll at least try to get up to date and read all the new posts.

Could someone fill me in on what's been happening since I left? Any wars? How's the space thing doing? What's the situation like for the SNC? What's up with the Jihad against Zor?

Zor decided to go grind some natives to dust while doing his land grab. I'm just making sure he reaps what he sows...

And BTW Coiler, you have no long range aviation assets to go scout as far as Valeria, so how the hell do you track a ship all the way to Valeria when you have no idea on the ship path?

Well, nothing much really beyond the Space Race and some SNC projects which you should have noticed in your PMs...

My subs followed it.

BTW, are my frigates, corvettes, and stratellites ready? If not, when will they be?

So your subs instantly appear where necessary, in time to be able to start following a random ship, and then much later, are able to torpedo it? Bullshit.

My subs followed it.

While this has been dealt with in game I think its worth pointing out that:

1) The ocean is BIG
2) Your subs would, at best, have gotten notice that the ship left port half a day to a full day after it happened (considering the time delay for San Dorado to notify everyone, your intelligence services to confirm the data as accurate, higher command to convene and make the kill order and then transmit to the subs)
3) With an average speed of 15-20 kt you are looking at a search arc encompassing roughly 90 degrees wide originating in San Dorado extending north and west for roughly 400 nautical miles. In other words the ship could be anywhere within an are comrpising roughly 125,000 nm^2. For a rough comparison try to imagine searching the entire state of Montana for the ship and then remember that the search area gets larger with every passing hour.

Part of the reason why we haven't had a lot of sub kills on any ship is that you have to let them get in to position. When I had my subs sink Shep's super subs they had spent the better part of a year and a half building tracking data on them and they were shadowing them permanently. By comparison when he sunk my ships he still took several days (nearly a week) before he could get a sub into position to make a shot and that was only because I did a speed run (30+ kt sustained) which would have pinged detectors in every convergence zone out there.

In other words hunting shipping outside of well established commercial lines and without being part of a pre-conceived plan is damn difficult. Certainly a last minute decision to go after a ship of this bland a charcter should be nigh on impossible without aerial recon assets to fix an initial position.
