You know, I really don't want to become a cynical little shit, but things like this make it unreasonably hard for me... :banghead:
It was certainly an unfortunate situation, but it originally came about due to stupidity, not conspiracy. At the time these bureaucracies were merged, it was sincerely believed that large quantities of meat and dairy were really good for you, so it was not seen as a conflict of interest. The problem was that subsequent medical research discovered this to be untrue, but by then the organizations were already merged. Of course, once they were merged, you could say that they did consciously practice dishonesty in order to pursue their two disparate goals, but that problem was eventually rectified. The organizations were disassociated, and the food pyramid was redrawn to show a more reasonable proportion where meat and dairy were no longer shown as the bulk of recommended dietary intake.

Oh. Well that's a relief.

Why was it mentioned if the problem's been rectified, though? The way it was brought up led me to believe it was happening now...

Because the cultural momentum is still there and the old food pyramids still get printed on boxes.

Ah. That makes sense.

Is skim milk any better for you than the others? I tend to drink that if possible due to the lower fat content...
