He was great. The rhyme at the end was an civil rights song and he delivered it well.
For I dipt into the future, far as human eye could see,
Saw the Vision of the world, and all the wonder that would be;
Saw the heavens fill with commerce, argosies of magic sails,
Pilots of the purple twilight dropping down with costly bales;
Heard the heavens fill with shouting, and there rain'd a ghastly dew
From the nations' airy navies grappling in the central blue;
He was great. The rhyme at the end was an civil rights song and he delivered it well.
Firstly, no, it wasn't the lyrics from a song. It was a personal opinion of the state of affairs now that used similar phrasing. The song in question is Big Bill Broonzy's "Black, Brown and White Blues" and what he said was only similar in that some of the words that he used to rhyme there are used in the song as well. Most aren't, which means that it is likely less a reference then a coincidence due to easy rhyming. Secondly, even if it was a reference I fail to see how that in any way makes it acceptable. "Fuck the police" may be the lyrics to an NWA song, that doesn't make it any less offensive. Thirdly, note that he was speaking in the present tense, asking god to bring the listed state of affairs around. At a point and time where the continual theme has been new unity after the Bush years, moving forward and facing the difficulties upon us together, turning and saying "its the fault of the group with that skin color" is so far out of fucking line it defies description.
Fuck that guy.

Yeah I agree. It had no place in that benediction. And as a 'yellow', I'm quite mellow enough as it is thank you very much. That sort of thing belongs in the last decade, we're past that aren't we?
I think it's important to remember that this guy hasn't actually done any Presidenting yet.
Of course he can talk the talk, that much is expected of any competant politician, but don't let the fact that Obama's not a complete moron impare your sense of judgement. Judge your new President by his actions and hold him to task when he gets it wrong.
Appearantly China censured parts if Obama's speech. In related news they also preferred Bush as a president (which I find somewhat suprising looking at all the republitard fear-mongering against China I've seen the last few years).
I remember some feed saying something about how only four inaugurations in the past have had poems presented. My immediate thought: "Jesus I can see why..."
Shotgunned a beer with some friends just after noon when he was sworn in. That'll make a good story in years to come. Pastor Fuckface was a huge blight on the ceremony, and did anyone else find the poet a little grating and just killed the whole mood?

Missed a good chunk of the address and the rest of the ceremony thereafter because I, ironically, had a history class. But Warren definitely detracted from the whole affair.

Well, the Republicans also happens to be the ones foolish enough to give benefits to companies setting up their factories in China.
Then you have people like Nancy Pelosi, who believe that China should not get the chance to build up their economy on the basis of human rights. That is bound to annoy China to some extend.

2 Items: First. President Obama was, during the campaign, much less enthusiastic about free-trade than former-President Bush has been. Generally (though not always, see Pat Buchanan) Republicans talk about trade as a mutually beneficial exchange, also generally (though not always, see Robert Rubin) Democrats talk about trade as a jobs issue. President Obama talked about Trade like a traditional Democrat, and the Chinese may be expecting him to act like a Democrat, and slow or reverse some of the free trade steps that have been taken. Also I expect that President Obama's trade rep. and the Democratic congress are going to press the fixed vs floating currency exchange rate issue more firmly. All these thing together probably mean that the future trade relationship won't be opening up much, which means less Chinese economic growth, not pleasant from their perspective.
The second item: Republicans aren't one group; former-President Bush had followed the tune of the business-wing regarding China, and ignored or soft-pedaled the concerns of the more bellicose party members. Look at the Dubai ports deal; well in line with a pro-free enterprise stance, ignoring the thinly-veiled anti-Arab sentiment of much of his party. His pro-business view continually annoyed a large chunk of his base (it's arguable that his immigration stance was also the pro-business immigration stance). Former-President Bush's China policy was totally consistent with that, and the Chinese appreciated the trade relationship.
Oh, and like ray alluded to, Democrats are probably going to link any new discussions about trade with China to human right's concerns.

Which is funny, given that China still has tons people living below the poverty line. Saying China should respect human rights when stalling their economic growth is actually ensuring more people cannot climb out of the poverty line is rather weird in my opinion.
Let's give them more rights when their main concern is their living standards, great idea. We all know how that kind of logic work out for Russians.

I really think the Western media and America are far too obsessed with Obama's skin tone, hair, nose, and skull shape for my liking. I just want him to be a competent leader who makes a real attempt to get rid of the dead weight that has accumilated under GWB. Barack Obama's atypical race and cultural background is being used as a silly gimmick like John McCain once being a Navy pilot who got beaten up by the Viet Cong.

Gimmick? Have you been living under a rock the last 10 years or have you just not noticed that America still has some serious racism issues?

[Grammar Nazi hat]: "Censored" and "Censured" have substantially different meanings; when something or someone is censured with a U it is formally reprimanded by an authoritative body. Wiki example: "On January 24, 2008, Republican Douglas Bruce from Colorado Springs, Colorado was censured by the Colorado House of Representatives for kicking a newspaper photographer during a morning prayer session, and refusing to apologize."
Censorship with an O is what China did in the linked article. The more you know![/Grammar Nazi hat]

Be fair - he's in Britain and can only know about such US social problems second hand.
If Obama is a competent PotUS then the color issue will become irrelevant. This is comparable to the big deal made out of Kennedy being Catholic when elected - big deal at the time, a non-issue since.

True, I just take issue with it being dismissed as a gimmick.

I skip over it a lot, too, but when it's a question pertaining to US culture or politics I tend to check the location field.

The poem definitely was a moodkiller. I guess they needed to clear out the Mall as quickly as possible-- and it worked!
The closing prayer with the race baiting rhyme was, indeed, annoying.
Something about Libertarianism always bothered me. Then one day, I realized what it was:
Libertarian philosophy can be boiled down to the phrase, "Work Will Make You Free."
In Libertarianism, there is no Government, so the Bosses are free to exploit the Workers.
In Communism, there is no Government, so the Workers are free to exploit the Bosses.
So in Libertarianism, man exploits man, but in Communism, its the other way around! If all you want to do is have some harmless, mindless fun, go H3RE INST3ADZ0RZ!! Grrr! Fight my Brute, you pansy!
I was on the mall for the event. It was simply, utterly amazing to be there. I don't really know how to describe it besides absolutely incredible to hear and see all of the historic things that happened.

John Stewart made a big joke about it on The Daily Show saying "President Obama had a unique solution to getting 2 million people out of the Washington Mall", then show footage of this loon reading a poem to a retreating crowd.

You found the poem or the benediction offensive? The inaugural poem was just poorly delivered; it was the benediction that could be seen as race-baiting.
Okay, let me see if I understand this: an old lion of the Civil Rights movement quotes a Civil Rights era blues song in the benediction, and this is somehow race-baiting? "White will embrace the right"--that's what passes for grievously offensive nowadays? Because I'm white as the driven snow, and I didn't take the slightest offense at that part of the benediction--it was obviously a reference to the fact that institutional racism and white privilege still exist and constitute obstacles for racial minorities, and not a swipe at every white person in the world. I mean, if you want to take his words completely literally, he said "the right"--maybe he's actually praying for all white people to become Republicans.

The rhyming part of the benediction, that's what I meant - frankly, the poem made no impression on me at all. Sorry, my bad, wasn't quite clear there.
COULD be race-baiting? >snort< It was.
