Fucking TV - component inputs dying.

Post by weemadando »

My TV is causing me issues with the component inputs getting hinky (needed to jiggle them to get all the colours to pick up properly a little while ago, now it's progressive to needing to use a wedge of folded paper to maintain the connections).

How bad an idea is it to try and pop the back off and resolder the connections myself on an HDTV? And yes, it's out of warranty.

Option 2 - does anyone know of a device that can reliably do a component => HDMI/VGA transfer as all the other plugs are still working just fine.

I would just re-solder the connections and call it good. They were most likely either weak or cold solder joints to begin with, and plugging shit in and out of the input was eventually enough to break the circuit. As for option 2, you would have to get a SCART chip to convert component to VGA since the signals are completely different, and I'm not aware of any analog pin-outs on HDMI so I wouldn't even consider that an option.

There are plenty of component-VGA converters out on the market, though IIRC only Viewsonic's will do HD resolutions. Gefen makes a component->HDMI convert as well, but it's ~US$300.
