Jsut think of it this way: everything is abotu some sort of compromise:Ryan Thunder wrote:Yeah, I had a feeling there might be issues. I was thinking of weapon pods, not unlike Hellfire missile pods and what have you, with their own ammunition, though I suppose there would still be the same issue of ludicrous ammo expenditure.Fingolfin_Noldor wrote:You probably could. But why the fuck do you need 4 of these things, and exhaust ammunition at 4 times the rate? Not to mention, these things aren't good against killing tanks.
Extra guns need more ammo, more ammo means more weight which means the helo flies slower
-If you try and get the speed back up this requires a more powerful engine which reduces range, ceiling, and a host of other issues
- If it stays slow then you can be targeted moe succesully by local AirDef units
- If you try and make the guns or ammo lighter to avoid those tradeoffs then you have to spend some combination of time or money.
In other words just always keep in mind that anything you do must be traded off against time, money, or performance and I don't just mean with this project I mean with everything.

Bombing is fine. Just about any craft could do the job. But no craft carries large guns (The GAU-9 or the GSh-30-2 30mm cannon) for strafing. Note that bombs are mostly as useful as a direct hit.Ryan Thunder wrote:The Lightning-B is a Lightning that has been optimized for tactical bombing, at the expense of its regular air-superiority capability. The Lightning is pretty much an F-15, which makes the Lightning-B pretty much an F-15E.
Yes and no. While the F-15E can carry lots of ordinance, it can't take too many hits and far less than the Su-39. I remember reading somewhere that there was a Su-25 that took a hit from a AIM-9 and lived long enough to tell the tale and got repaired.Ah. So I don't have the capability at all, then. XD
Would my F-15E analogs be a good substitute, though?

I'd be concerned about how well these CAS and COIN aircraft and helicopter gunships would stand up against the heavy air defenses prevalent in the STGOD. I doubt they'd really be used except in beating down insurgents and in Veleria.

Assuming the army in question is competent enough to make sure their short and medium range SAMs are close by with IRST sensors, radar, electro-optics, yeah, I would imagine they could shoot down almost just about any aircraft.phongn wrote:I'd be concerned about how well these CAS and COIN aircraft and helicopter gunships would stand up against the heavy air defenses prevalent in the STGOD. Just about any true major player battle would have to being with extensive SEAD and BARCAP operations acting against each other. Nobody is dumb enough, I assume, to start bringing in ground troops while their opponent still has a completely integrated AirDef network operational. Obviously mobile and tactical SAMs would still be a factor but nobody is dumb enough to send ground troops in when they can't be supported from the air.phongn wrote:I'd be concerned about how well these CAS and COIN aircraft and helicopter gunships would stand up against the heavy air defenses prevalent in the STGOD. Your low-altitude craft can be swept from the skies by your opponent's CAP while you can't defend them since your ground forces carrying mobile SAMs will be subject to SEAD being carried out against them. Now there is a whole bunch of complexity behind that but for the quick surface glance that's the issue.Ryan Thunder wrote:Uhh...CmdrWilkens wrote:[...]Nobody is dumb enough, I assume, to start bringing in ground troops while their opponent still has a completely integrated AirDef network operational. You could just keep on using the RegulatedOmniBanknote (ROB) used by the MESS. Cool! I guess part of why San Dorado is totally awesome is the fact that its a trading hub, where they sell pornography and overpriced crap imported from Shroomania and elsewhere (like Byzantium, most recently). Plus, they also export stuff like lumber and other resources extracted from the rest of Frequesue, like dog meat. And they get a little something out of both deals!SiegeTank wrote:We don't; I myself have always labored under the assumption that San Dorado at least uses Shroomanian currency.Ryan Thunder wrote:Does the FTO have a common currency?
