Now that I've started this madness, I must agree that 3e is better than 2e, IF (and that's a big freakin if) you have a good character generator. E-tools from Wizards is kind of bad. PCGen is decent and its Java.

I've played DnD since the early 80s and 3e is better imo then 2e. I find it very easy to create characters with the 3e system on paper

Wait until 3.5e comes out in July to buy the books. supposedly it's going to simplify some more things, like partial actions and such.

The point of creating a character with 15 strength rather than 14 is that he only needs one more point to reach te next modifier.

At least it's better than the old "If it's under 16 it doesn't affect anything" set of statistics.

You're kidding. I blow $20 a pop on the core books, and now I have to buy NEW $20 core books?

Sorry Cyril...

Luckily for me, to date, I have spent a grand total of US$ 0.60 on D&D.

And really. unless you're going to be the DM, you don't really need anything but the PHB.

The new rules changes are going to be put in the SRD, which means that (along with all of the rules for D&D and d20 Modern) they are available for free, online. The only reason to buy the books is ease of reference and looks.

Hell, you can get many d20 books in PDF format online (kazaa and the like). Sure, it's evil but...wait...It's just evil...never mind then.

Bah, I prefer the D6 engine using stuff that had actual in-game effects. This is just bad design lacking actual purpose. Didn't know about stats not having modifiers under 16, I'll have to look into that.

Oh, and D6 already took partial actions and free-actions into accout. Wonder how long It'll be before D20 starts using an armor system that takes damage to armor and partial cover into accout... :P

Any idea what the new update is supposed to "fix"?

A good collection of details are available at ENWorld. Basically, 3.5e will include changes to a few classes (bard, ranger, monk, paladin), the elimination of partial actions; restructuring of the DR mechanic, changes to spells (heal, haste, and harm in particular), and general modifications for clarity. New stuff will also be added, such as prestige classes. Nothing particularly game-breaking, except maybe the class modifications.
