Question regarding SW FTL after Clone Wars TV show...
OK I really want to ask the experts here, we saw in the animated clone wars show that a frigate did something that up 'till now was thought to be impossible. It jumped to hyperspace in the gravity well of a planet! That places it in a very similar way as to how Hyperspace from say Stargate works in that it was not seemingly affected by it. The question is does this override all previous Star Wars canon that stated this could not be done?
Re: Question regarding SW FTL after Clone Wars TV show...
In the same episode, a ship was also in danger of flying into the sun...in Hyperspace.

Yes that is another thing so far it was canon that ships could not really crash into objects in hyperspace as it is a different dimension but that they could be pulled out of hyperspace or the hyperdrive damaged by the gravitational shadow of a celestial body at least since New Hope. Frankly I'm confused...Thanas wrote:In the same episode, a ship was also in danger of flying into the sun...in Hyperspace.

You are right my bad, I hope somebody here has answers for this because it makes no sense to me at all that all the previous canon would be dropped after the airing of this particular Clone Wars episode...NecronLord wrote:...

As I understand it, the presence of a gravity well in the path of the ship trips a safety that drops a ship out of hyperspace so it can't or won't plow into the planetary body. So, leaving a gravity well is going in the opposite direction of the body, thus it could be argued that the nav computer or what ever computer in charge of the safety device that drops ships out when tripped, isn't worried about large planetary bodies in the ships aft.
So, yeah. Aim the nose at the ground and your safety device trips and won't allow you to drive through the planet. Aim at the stars and your safety device is unconcerned and off you go, to infinity and beyond.

As for 'headed to a star ohnoes', they were pretty beat up and the auto-off might not have been functioning. Plus, Han mentions it's possibly to pilot oneself into a star or black hole, for what worth his off the cuff statements have.

Re: Question regarding SW FTL after Clone Wars TV show...
The hyperdrive was clearly damaged, given they couldn't stop the jump from occurring. Perhaps the safety feature preventing jumps in a gravity well were damaged or deactivated. Of course that raises the question; if the safety can be deactivated, why not use that to escape interdictor ships? Unless jumping when deep inside a gravity well causes stress or damage to the hyperdrive.
On the star: Han says himself in ANH that going through a star in hyperspace would "end your trip real quick". We know that objects at sub-light speeds are dangerous hazards in hyperspace. That's the whole point of a nav-comp, to plot a safe course around obstacles.

And the main point of having hyperspace trade routes.
We also see a CR20 troop carrier take off from Muunilinst airspace and jumping right above the skyscrapers (Chapter 11, from 2004). Everyone seems to have forgotten that.
I've heard there's even a comic where they fly through a planet in hyperspace, but never seen it. From Jedi Council: Acts of War or something. Is this true?

Yep, but it wasn't through the planet, it was around it. And the pilote was Jedi.VT-16 wrote:I've heard there's even a comic where they fly through a planet in hyperspace, but never seen it. From Jedi Council: Acts of War or something. Is this true?

Re: Question regarding SW FTL after Clone Wars TV show...
This is old news. As Darth Wong points out on the Hyperdrive page, hyperjumps inside gravity wells (hell, inside atmosphere) have been demonstrated in Dark Empire. It is obviously not impossible, merely difficult and problematic, and/or dangerous.
"But there's no story past Episode VI, there's just no story. It's a certain story about Anakin Skywalker and once Anakin Skywalker dies, that's kind of the end of the story. There is no story about Luke Skywalker, I mean apart from the books."

As earlier as The Thrawn Trilogy, Luke jumped out of a gravity well. It blew out his engines and left him dead in space.

Re: Question regarding SW FTL after Clone Wars TV show...
It was in HTTE and Luke did not. He reverse-triggered his accelleration compensators to break a tractor beam lock long enough to physically move out of the area of effect of the Interdictor's gravity well (damaging his hyperdrive in the process). He did NOT jump out of the gravity well.Crazedwraith wrote:As earlier as The Thrawn Trilogy, Luke jumped out of a gravity well. It blew out his engines and left him dead in space.

Re: Question regarding SW FTL after Clone Wars TV show...
My take on this;
There's probably a chance based on the strength of the gravity well 'hit', and the power of the hyperdrive, that the field that lets a ship jump into hyperspace will collapse. This could be why Interdictor cruisers always work; they are at the minimum strength of gravity needed to pull a ship out of hyperspace.
The more powerful the gravity well, the more likely chance of being pulled out of hyperspace (i.e Stars, Black Holes).
That's why hyperjumps inside atmospheres are possible, just rare; there's a chance you'll get pulled right the hell back out, and will have wasted that fuel doing a hyperspace jump of all of 10 meters.
It's also possible that the chances of dropping out of hyperspace increase the longer you are in a gravity well, regardless of the well's it's power. A culmulative effect as it where. This would also effect hyperspace navitation.
For example, Anakin Skywalker leading his fighter squadron through a nebula instead of a straight hyperspace jump through it. (Clone Wars 3-D Cartoon)
This is supported by the Hyperspace Inertial Momentum Sustainers used by the Bakuran task force in the Corellian Crissis Trilogy. They hit the Centerpoint Interdiction field, and kept going for a considerable distance before the HIMS systems completely failed and the ships dropped out of hyperspace completely.
Which brings up another point from the novels; Apparently, hitting the gravity well / hyperspace mass shadow of a object can damage an active hyperdrive (and possibly the ship as well). Recall Talon Karrade discussing his discovery of the Katana fleet with Mara Jade. His description of the incident, coupled with the damage his ship recieved from hitting the shadow of a large comet, was what let Thrawn figure out who else knew about the Katana fleet.
This is probably why Anakin Skywalker, from the earlier example, didn't attempt a hyperspace jump through that nebula when trying to intercept the Malevenece. The odds were, over a jump that long through a nebula, ships would drop out of hyperspace (and not nessacarily near each other), and sustain damage, possibly preventing them from engaging the Malevenence.
It would also explain the lack of exploration beyond the Galaxy (+ it's satelite Galaxies). All it would take is a diffuse nebula/halo surrounding the galaxy to make that difficult. You hit the halo, and eventually, your ship gets dragged back into realspace, possibly dozens of lightyears from help and any way to re-enter hyperspace.
The Vong, with there self-sustaining, multi-generational vessels, probably didn't even notice the Halo, of if they did, it was a mild inconvience.

I've been asked why I still follow a few of the people I know on Facebook with 'interesting political habits and view points'.
It's so when they comment on or approve of something, I know what pages to block/what not to vote for.

Hmm... Interesting still was I the only one that noticed how similar a ship traveling in hyperspace in Clone Wars looks to a ship traveling in Hyperspace in SGverse? Even though the 2 are not related the similarities of how they look while en-route are startling!
Anyway thx for the feedback and the info at least I can rest easy that the canon from one of my favorite franchises has not been trampled to death...

Yeah....and it couldn't possibly be because the producers of Stargate pay homage to Star Wars, much as has happened in Stargate and other works too often to count.
