Was in USA Today also. Seems interesting, since it provides a line of separation between the RCC and the ultra-hardline fundamentalists. I'm waiting for a Chick Tract to come out on this sometime in the next couple weeks, about how the Pope and JK Rowling are in collusion with the Devil  .

This should be a non issue, but I'm glad the Vatican is taking some steps towards enlightenment.

The fundies will object of course, but they never really did tolerate reading, learning, etc.

And they will approve anal sex! Oh wait a minute, they already do, as long as it's priests and little boys.

The Vatican has also stated that belief in evolution and the Catholic faith are not mutually exculsive. Too bad more of the believers in the faith don't know that.

Well ... this is better than nothing I guess. Granted, they define "bad" as "conflicting with Christian ideaology," but at least they're not making a fuss about the series. It gets kids to read, and that's always a good thing. Except if it's something like Mein Kampf I guess.

REUTERS-The Vatican In a related story, still no apology from the Vatican for the mass murder of 'those heathen sinners' or for fucking up the minds of hundreds of generations of western civilization.

What I can't believe is the fundamentalists who felt that Harry's calling his aunt a "bitch" was somehow WORSE than her attempts to strike him in the SAME NOVEL. It's okay to be physically abusive to your kids, but it's out of bounds to verbally abuse your relatives?

"We are asking pardon for the divisions among Christians, for the use of violence that some have committed in the service of truth, and for attitudes of mistrust and hostility assumed toward followers of other religions," said Pope John Paul II, dressed in the purple robes of Lent.

The phrase "violence in the service of truth" is an often-used reference to the treatment of heretics during the Inquisition, the Crusades, and forced conversions of native peoples.

Well, the Vatican did apologize for the Holocaust, of which the then current Pope was partly responsible for.

He's basically admitting that the use of violence did the Church a service. If it wasn't for the monstrous amounts of violence and forced conversions, the Church wouldn't be anywhere near as influential as it is today.

More of along the lines that the books do not promote the use of Wizardry and Witchcraft , and that they use the mythos of magic to tell a moral story of good vrs/over Evil. The practice of sorcery through collusion with the 'devil' is still out......

Don't forget that the Catholic clergy is formally educated. As a matter of fact, Catholic seminary is graduate level work.

This is another big difference between the Catholic church and the fundies. In a fundamentalist church, Joe Bob-high-school-drop-out can be ordained.

Fundamentalists may be idiots, but at least their ministers don't molest children.

Wrong. Would you like me to dig up a few stories on child molestation by fundy preachers? Just two years ago, a Baptist preacher was arrested right here in my town for child molestation.

Don't give me that "at least fundy preachers don't molest children" bullshit. It happens in the fundy churches too.

It's not exactly hard to conclude that priests molest little boys more often because they're more (read: totally) sexually repressed than the other denominations.

Then again, a lot of the fundie ministers probably beat their children, as well.

Actually, the Catholic demomination doesn't have a higher rate of pedophile preists. They did however actively cover for them, allowing them to commit more crimes. They also were arrested en masse making them much higher profile than one arrest where the church cooperated.

As a son of an ex-preacher, I can honestly say that celibacy is probably a better idea. Preachers often neglect and abuse their families in order to keep a good image in the eyes of the congregation. Not only that, but no child should be subjected to having a preacher father. It's abusive.

I guess being raised by a fundie family, preacher or not, is abusive as well.
