Compare the death of Ton Phanan, in Iron Fist, which was one of the most heartwrenching moments of the EU for me, with the death of Lujayne Forge in Rogue Squadron. (This was a character who Stackpole actually tried to develop before having stormies kill her in her sleep.)

Bad example, Ton was a pretty major back up character throughout the first and 2nd book to his death, which stacks the comparison in favour of Allston. If you want a better comparison lets take Jesmin Ackbar's death in Wraith Squadron, like Lujayne its the first causality the squadron takes and unlike Phanan its an unforeshadowed sudden death.

Right. Forgot about Jesmin. My bad. Still It's an even better example, with Wedge trying to figure out how to write the letter of condolence and Kell dealing with his attempt to save her.
