Dr. Who season three

Post by dragon »

Ok the library finally got season three and I watched it. Was some pretty good episodes.
Especially the very last part where the bow of the titanic runs into the Tardis and the look on the docotrs face was pricless.

While Season Three wasn't as strong as Season One, I actually prefered it overall to Seasons Two and Four. "Last of the Time Lords" petered out, but I really liked "Utopia", while "Human Nature" really was a breath of fresh air after the abominable Dalek two parter and slightly so-so episodes like "The Lazuras Experiment" and "42", and "Blink" was the primary reason why Moffat will go far as the next head writer.

Only saw the first few episodes of season 1, all of 2 and 3 but have not seen any of season 4 yet.

I didn't see all of Season 3 I think i missed a couple of episodes in the middle, Lazarous and 42, but what I did see was mainly entertaining. Utopia especially was a good reveal of the Master. I only wish Jaccobi had the role for a little longer.

On the other hand I was totally not impressed with the direction they took Martha Jones in. In the first episode she had some spunk but from their on in she had a inexplicable crush on the doctor that never went away.

I enjoyed season 3 more than season 2 as well, but I think it's likely due to the fact that season 2 had lowered the bar a fair bit. Still, the only NuWho season I can honestly say was good is the first one.

Season 2 didn't have Daleks in Manhattan or Last of the Time Lords - wasting 33% of your season on complete unmitigated shit is worse than S2's somewhat bland episodes. S3 certainly has some very good stuff, but it was a sign of things to come with it's massive swings from 'good' to 'fucking horrible' and back again.

S1 is the only season where while I was ripping from DVDs so I could stream to my 360, I couldn't think of a single episode to drop. I considered Boomtown but didn't, whereas S2 loses about 4 and S3 only HAS 4. :)

Rise of the Cybermen wasn't as bad as Daleks in Manhattan but I can't say I enjoyed either of them. I also thought that Girl in the Fireplace and School Reunion were overrated. On the other hand, Human Nature and Blink surpass anything from season 2.

(Appropriate that the two best stories in D10's run were the ones in which the Doctor barely appeared.)

Dude GitFP is like... the best or second-best episode of the new series! :) The cybie thing was pretty much a brainless lark, but it wasn't the massively stupid and offensive finale-invalidating pile of shit the Daleks n Manhattan turned out to be. When you break the S2 finale you can fuck off and die; and I note that even in the Christmas Special they're STILL DOING IT.

I'm a bit torn on Human Nature. It's good, it's got good themes, but bits of it are dodgey (much more so in the first part where it's more bland period drama) and the tone doesn't really 'fit' S3 with revenge etc. It's very good, but it's spotty. S3 is worth it just for Utopia and Blink. The buildup to the Master reveal in Utopia is fucking awesome, the highpoint of the show to date.

GitFP had some of the best moments in the new series but as an episode it was very disjointed. The Mme. Pompadour stuff clashed horribly with the clockwork robot stuff which dragged the episode down quite a bit.

I'd also dispute the claim that any NuWho season past the first one can be said to have any sort of theme. The writers may try to insert them but it always ended up as nothing more than window dressing.

I thought the themes tied it back up again; the framing story of the silly spaceship was there to create the jeopardy that allowed what's her name to experience the entireity of the Doctor Thrill Ride in a single episode, while allowing the other characters to reflect on this. This is also what 'worked' in School Reunion (which I don't particularly like) - something is introduced which the cast reacts to in a way that shows us things about them and shows them about their future or their lives. The silly gargoyle thing is just window-dressing.

When I referred to 'themes' up there I meant within Human Nature (ie, war is bad, early 20th Century Britain is a strange place, Martha loves the Doctor for No Reason, the Doctor is merciful but ultimately vengeful and people die for his pride etc) there were themes that were good, but that the pacing of the first part is just meh and bleh. It's not terrible by any means.

It was overall better than some of the sum of its parts. Season Two's "New Earth" is on hindsight RTD's most blah episode I can think of, although "Doomsday" certainly runs circles around "Last of the Time Lords" (I sort of liked it, but it fell apart when the Doctor turned into a gnome) and "Journey's End" (which I don't dislike as much many here do).

Hum question in the first season when he took rose to new earth he said it was in another galaxy, but when he took the female med student there he said it was only 50,000 ly away. Plus for 5 billion ad the city looks a little on the primative side :D

I hear technology is totally linear and always obvious? Hell, humanity was only indirectly responsibly for the Earth at that point.

Galaxies move. In the year 7 billion, Andromeda will be colliding with the Milky Way. This is somewhat before that, but it's safe to assume that it's one of the local group galaxies that's moved closer.

The Time Lords are over 4.5 billion years old as a technological, spacefaring species, and yet they still have many items of technology that are recognisable to us. Doctor Who's never been that big on the 'things in the future are unrecognisably advanced' meme.

Only a few decades seperated the two vists, so was just a slip on the writters part most likely.

As for technology- Where did Captain Harkness get all his advance tech such as his time ship and time watch, energy weapons and more such. I remember him mentioning something about time police and a year but don't rember the year.

Both visits were in the year five billion. When the galaxy in question could be within 50,000 Ly from the former location of Earth, no problem. There's 'galaxies' that are 200,000 light years away now, five billion years into the future...

The ship was built by a race called the Chula. They're clearly quite sophisticated, given what their nanites could do.

The gun came from the 51st century, and may have been based on time lord technology (given that the Doctor blew up the factory that made it and it wasn't simply produced again) or some other superior race's work, as did the vortex manipulator watch (The 51st century is obviously quite a sophisticated era for humans).
