I've been trying to make a game post for the entire day, and the bloody customers keep interrupting me, so there's little chance I'll be able to accomplish that :D
Well, that means we have to move most of the flights to CSR or Comona. Or do we poke our thumb at them and see if they dare to fire off a missile at our rockets?
There's more to it than that: any mission longer than a few hours will have to avoid Japanistan. If the place was smaller, it could simply be timed to avoid the airspace, but Japanistan is motherfucking huge, which leaves exotic orbits like the Molniya type which requires a lot more delta-v (either to enter an exotic orbit or fly above the 10 000 kilometers claimed by Japanistan)

Come to think about it, how do we even deploy anything in geostationary orbit since they cover that bit?

Looks like we either deal with Japanistan or try gunboat diplomacy.

Uh, what? No they don't, they claimed airspace up to 10 000 kilometers. GEO is above 30 000 for Earth.

Well, this much is true. On the other hand, the MESS has it easier with their moon mission, since it leaves Earth orbit after two orbits or so, so they won't reach Japanistan. On the other hand, they're boned when it comes to multi-day LEO test flights as much as we are :D

So Japanistan went from semi-isolationist because of the Death of Shepistan to "oh shit" mode, complete with reactionary factions taking power to once more cause the rest of the world trouble.

Because Shroomania wanted to become part of the club and the CSR gets more land.

Way to go, CATO. :P

Maybe after the near civil war, Japanistan will want to reengage the world in a much more civilized and not-belligerent fashion. Becoming a rival of the IRT in selling cheap overpriced crap to everyone.

We'll all end up driving the MAIBATSU THUNDER!

EDIT:

Also guys I won't be available for the next two weeks. So please wrap things up for me. I've already talked to SiegeTank about how we'll ship the Warden back and how its crews have become fat and decadent and totally in love with Shroomania.

But I think this would be cooler.

EDIT:

Let's just say that they "changed lodgings" after a day or two. We were not expecting Coilerburger captives guests and did not have a room ready yet.

Or some will come back with horror stories of how the Shroomanians attempted to force them to overeat and sexually harrass them, riling anti-Shroomanian sentiment in Coilerburg and perhaps elsewhere. I'm getting visions of some of them returning and telling how they had to purge like vain supermodels to undo the effects of the Shroomanian attempts to make them overeat.

Also, wouldn't they have been returned by now? Repatriation should've been within a month.

BTW, one thing Japanistan could do in reaction to CATO is pulling out of the manned overflight agreement with FASTA countries, thus making test flights a royal pain.
I've been thinking about that. OTOH, it also (for the time being) provides Japanistan some tempting targets to choose from when the time is right for them to revoke flight privilidges.

It is also logical to assume that they are able to maintain a prescence at your launch facilities, allowing them valuable intelligence. You're literally inviting them to come in and poke around in your rockets & payloads before launches.

If folks don't mind me playing Japanistan, I may go into detail a bit about that...

Naw. If I play Japanistan, they'll be confrontational and assholish. They just won't be as random as before; doing wierd finger-poke-in-eye-for-the-hell-of-it kind of stuff.

There, a little more flavor for Japanistan. No major policy changes, just a reaction to recent events and increased patrolling as a result.

Something else to work with.

Although Skimmer junked his OrBat when he left, I distinctly remember that the Japanistani Navy was the weakest of the three branches, just having some deisel subs, frigates and destroyers, and a couple helo carriers. Even the Cascadian Navy was more potent.

They might have feasibly begun a naval expansion with their Velerian holdings, but I don't remember Skimmer posting much about such a thing and if it was begun they'd probably still be in the early building phase.

If that's the case, I'll revamp another OOB with a lot of frigates & other light ships, with a few old rustbuckets moulding in harbors. Between Velerian holdings, the sub menace (and wasn't there a pathogen attack on a Japanistani colony in East Veleria too?) the Navy will be getting a lot of attention.

I don't recall much of Skimmer's OOB, myself, I was going to repopulate it with a lot of 1960's and 1970's aircraft for the Air Force, mostly Dassault-Mirage designs with a few others thrown in, and a tiny handful of Rafale fighters mostly in a "boutique" unit to show off. The IJN navy represented in my post will have grand names like "carrier battle group" and "escort fleet" and stuff like that, but it'll really be cobbled-together leftovers with a tiny handful of recent, new ships given grandiose names.

The "carrier" will be a single "Hyuga" class, for example.

The IJAF had a lot of older MiG-type aircraft, some newer birds in much lesser numbers (MiG-31, FLANKER) along with the joint IRT-Japanistan high-endurance advanced interceptor.

I can do MiGs instead, if we want to remain as true to the original intent as possible. I was thinking of avoiding MiG designs, though, since those are sorta the default for CATO. My rationale for using older, 60's/70's-era French aircraft was because no one else was using them and they were from the same time period many of Skimmer's original MiGs were.

Nevermind that bloody navy, the thing that scares Byzantium more than anything was his huge army, which was why CATO places as many of 2 huge armies worth of troops, and that's why I set a 5-10 year plan to expand my army into something equal to 4 US Army III Corps worth. If you are going to make Japanistani belligerent again, I'd be forced to accelerate the expansion.

HA!

My Obsesive Saving of the OOB thread from when we all made our original ones Pays off:
Skimmer wrote:Country Profile of Imperial Japanistan

Current Formal Name: Co Property Sphere of the Chrysanthemum Throne.

Old Formal Name: Great Imperial Japanistan (before 1982)

Short Name: Japanistan

Term for Citizens: Japanistani

Capital: Super Mega New Tokyo

Geography
Size: Approximately 3,182,000 square kilometers (478,000km2 disputed)

Topography: Japanistan is a land of numerous large river valleys running roughly north to south through the country. The areas in-between and in particular the north and north west have extensive mountain ranges. An extensive and old drainage network of rivers and marshlands has produced numerous wide flat valleys floor. Dense forest cover outside of populated areas. Numerous small offshore islands, besides the disputed very large volcanic island New Sumatra.

Climate: Wet topical monsoon climate though with a relatively lengthy but modest eight month wet season. Four month dry season may see occasionally intensive downpours during its second half, which is intensely hot.

Society
Population: About 500 million (75 million disputed) in 2008; .91% annual growth rate in 2007. 27% urban mostly concentrated in special economic zones and technology cities. Super Mega Tokyo New-Old Tokyo metropolitan area population estimated at 37.6 million in 2007, the next ten largest cities vary between 16.7 million and 2.2 million in population. Overall density 157 people per square kilometer.

Languages: Japanistan Basic mandated for use in schools and government, all citizens required to be fluent by 1981, current estimate place the speaking population outside of New Sumatra at more then 99%. Approximately 45 significant minority languages linger in use. More then 500 languages still used on New Sumatra.

Ethnic and Regional Groups: Two main categories make up the Japanistan population, the mainland Japan-Kyrush-Chiangjap block (83 percent) and the New Sumatra groups (15 percent). Remaining groups consist of ethnic enclaves in the depths of the Japanistans mountainous regions, many of which are very old and yet now in the process of ‘Co Property’ forced urbanization which total 12 percent of the population.

Religion: Japanistans system and government and national order stem from twisted teachings of Buddhism warped into a fanatical worship of the god Emperor, and a strict code of obedience to the whims of his speakers. New Sumatra is home to a significant Christian and Islamic population. The official state doctrines of law and order, idol worship and population movement control have been likened to a religion.

Education: Government supports universal pre K through 18 age education in a multi sector public school system. All universities are free and save a handful foreign exchange institutions, also government run. Students are admitted based on merit and political requirements. Estimated 99.7% literacy rate in 2007. The Japanistani education system operates a number of military programs, including those for pilot training intended to select youth for service as young as age 14. Schools emphasis regimentation and obedience, while also demanding the highest standards. Troublemakers are ruthlessly weeded out and placed in special educational environments, training for a future of fanaticism.

Health: Modern hospitals in all cities and large urban areas, large web of relatively well equipped health clinics in rural areas. Reliable access to clean water has been a ‘national shock campaign’ goal for the last thirty year and has significantly reduced outbreaks of disease.

Economy
Salient Features: A complicated mixed economy with central planning. Restricted free enterprise is allowed both within and outside of the tech cities and special economic zones, but it is in these limited access zones that economic progress flourishes amid vast new modern complexes.
Agriculture: Population growth has eaten into food surpluses amid inefficient working of collectivized land and disruptions on New Sumatra. Major crops include rice, maize, rubber, sugarcane, tobacco (banned for local consumption) and cotton. More then 50% of all forest cover has been felled to clear land. Fisheries remain important for domestic and export consumption. In recent years Japanistan has been forced to import dairy and milk products to meet a surge in demand from an emergent middle class.

Industry: Large industrial economy for both heavy and light manufacturing supported by extensive mining and construction. Railway and canal building is especially intensive for the modern age, owing to restrictions on oil fueled motor vehicles. The main centers of high technology development have been in the cities and special economic zones. Exports comprise of a diverse range of products from tanks to baby bottles all of varying quality. Certain minerals are also exported, while others must be imported to sustain development. Cement usage exceeded 830 billion metric tons in 2007.

Energy Sources: Domestic energy resources include modest oil fields, very large coal deposits and several natural gas fields. Coal to oil conversion takes place under a military subsidized program. A series of hydroelectric projects now account for a significant fraction of the total grid load. Three nuclear plants provide a minor contribution. Extensive projects have brought electricity within reach of virtually the entire countryside. Installed electrical power exceeded 260 gigawatts in 2007, of which two thirds comes from coal fired thermal power stations. Investment in renewable and additional nuclear energy has blatantly begun under the ‘Gleaming Cherry Sun’ program.

Foreign Trade:

Transportation and Communications

Railways: Main lines 132,214km standard gauge, 48,190km narrow gauge excluding industrial lines. Railways are the corner stone of internal transportation and are being expanded with the goal of reaching virtually all settlements of significance. The system has extensive double tracking and electrification over approximately 40% of route miles. The railway system has assumed almost mythical importance to the population of the cities and even the countryside as the ‘binder of Imperial progress’ which has allowed Japanistan to climb out of poverty. Extensive tram lines for passengers and freight link branch out through the cities and into the hills away from mainlines.

Roads: National highway system designed primarily of military purposes, and with relatively few paved secondary roads. Total length of paved roads 739,000km. Personal motor cars and public buses number approximately 8.2 million alongside 13 million other commercial vehicles.

Inland waterways: Extensive irrigation and shipping canal network, linking a series of dams and lock complexes. Many rivers are navigable for ships of 3,000 tons to a significant distance inland, and water transport is a vital link in the transportation chain for cargo and passengers. Several combined hydropower-lock projects are now underway. Work on the Kra canal, being built by hand across the narrowest yet also ruggedness potion of the isthmuses has drawn international attention for working conditions, and has proceeded only sporadically.

Maritime Shipping: The duel ports of Super Mega New Tokyo-Old Tokyo with the new deepwater annex are preeminent, handling 35% of imports and 25% of exports. Four other ports are designated as deepwater facilities and now maintain a 15 meter channel. 11 ports in total are licensed to handle foreign cargoes, more then eighty others operate for coastal craft. Merchant fleet includes 782 major ships over 1000 GRT totaling 8.7 million GRT.

Civil Aviation: Domestic air service to about one hundred cities and towns throughout the country. International service from seven airports including two in the Super Mega Tokyo-Old Tokyo metropolitan area.

Telecommunications: 229 million mainlines in use, 175 million cellular telephones, 371 radio stations, 11 television stations, state controlled cable and internet access. All communications subject to restriction, monitoring and termination.

Government and Politics

The 1950s postwar periods was a time of unrest and rebellion in Japanistan. Defeated but not conquered a new civilian government had been installed, but proved weak and corrupt. At the height of unrest, much of it allegedly manufactured, the civilian government was toppled out of power by a coup, and within a year the self proclaimed military junta ‘National Sunshine Council’ had obtained the rubber stamp of the Diet on a new constitution.

Officially supreme and absolute power resides was restored to the Emperor, who rule was spread to the masses through the appointed National Sunshine Council, which in turn advises the new position of Chrysanthemum Fuehrer, an appointed head of the elected Diet and defacto speaker for the government. In practice virtually all decision making authority resides with the National Sunshine Council, but to question its words is to question the rule of the mortal yet still divine Emperor of the Chrysanthemum Throne and leader of the Co Property Sphere.

Following the 1972 invasion and annexation of New Sumatra, Imperial Japanistan announced a new economic policy designed to absorb and strength the new conquest. This policy increased economic planning, and squashed personal freedoms, while simultaneously allowing for increased economic freedoms. As part of this policy the prefectures of Japanistan and New Sumatra now formally belong to the Co Property Sphere of the Chrysanthemum Throne, a term little used, and are divided into Economic Action Zones. These zones included rural Development Zones mainly charged with improving basic living conditions and infrastructure, walled off Technology Cities which engage in the highest levels of research and development, and fenced Special Economic Areas which have high concentrations of factories, particularly those involving foreign production. Movement in and out of Action Zones may be restricted, and entry into Tech Cities, practical mirrors of foreign modern urban development, is a much sought after goal.

Judiciary System

Japanistans Criminal Punishment is based around trial by a panel of judges, but jury trials may be requested or even mandated on certain subjects. An extensive but largely unarmed police and surveillance force is maintained, supported by the paramilitary Special Armed Police and the Boarder Guards. Attention is paid to both real crime and political crimes, the later of which can range from actual subversion to listening to unapproved music. Punishment by imprisonment is limited to no more then 10 years in most cases, with a regime of forced labor and indoctrination being the preferred course of action. Corporal punishment and the death penalty are both also employed, as is forced conscription into special units, particularly of lawbreaking youths.

Army Force Structure Introduction

Imperial Japanistan Army Ground Forces are distributed among the ten administrative Military Districts, including the Special Capital Zone and the New Sumatra Special Security Region. The Ground Forces in each District constitute an “Area Army”, redesignated to a “Front” in wartime when faced with actual attack. Most mobile troops are concentrated into one of several groups of forces. A Corps in the Japanistani Army is a divisional sized joining of multiple brigades amounting to a division.

Category A units are of full active strength and modern equipment, Category B units are of full active strength and older equipment, Category C units are of reduced active strength, much older equipment and large reserve components, Category D units are reserve units of no more then 1-3% active strength cadres and much older equipment.

Not quite all attachments and support units shown (screw counting radio intercept battalions ect…), and ‘modern’ is relative to Japanistani standards, not the generally superior weapons of foreign powers.

Imperial Japanistan Air Force Structure Introduction

For Japanistan, always an air minded nation, the uneasy truce at the end of the second Great War was won by the self sacrifice of the Divine Wind Special Attack Force, and mustard gas bombs. Foremost among these volunteers for death in Tokko attacks were the aviators of the Army and Navy Air Forces. The modern Japanistan Air Force looks to this time as one never to be repeated and yet to be honored, and maintains the highest standards for pilot selection and quality. With a population of 500 million, it is well able to accept only 1 in 250 applicants to the training program.

Operational Imperial Japanistani Air Force aircraft are deployed in one of six numbered Air Armies, one of them dedicated to training, and with aircraft intermixed on numerous air fields. Japanistan has invested heavily on creating redundant, hardened air field facilities, and maintains an extensive integrated air defense system under the Air Force subordinate Strategic Air Defence Troops.

Navy Force Structure Introduction

Under the Terms of the 1955 Total War Preparedness Act the mission of the newly renamed Imperial Navy was no longer ocean dominance, but to protect the flank of the army and escort coastal commerce. While a while old capital ships, heavy cruisers and aircraft carriers were allowed to live on, new construction was limited to destroyers and submarines. Handfuls of old capital ships and cruisers remain, all with only token upgrades and which are kept laid up much of the year.

Ships are named by class and are real and afloat unless otherwise noted, Anchar and a Kara modified to have a full, rather then just aft S-300 battery are fictional but hardly out of line and inferior to AEGIS ships.

Imperial Japanistani Paramilitary and Militia Forces Introduction

Funded and organized outside the direct lines of military command and control are the paramilitary and militia forces. These forces have the mission of aiding the training and selection of youth for regular service, overseeing civil defence, assisting the military in local operations and generally providing for the proper moral guidance and national military spirit of the Japanistani Imperial subject

Imperial Militia

Japanistani Organized Militia training consists of a 3 week course normally taught on various weekends over two years, followed by one half day per year of drill until age 49. The organized militia has roll slots for 6.4 million members and is maintained at full strength, with slots normally being prized and passed down through families. The Active Militia consist mainly of some 400,000 personal trained to higher standards to act as wartime civil defence wardens, and who attend 2 days of training per year besides staging periodic drills in conjunction with other civil defence forces. The unorganized militia theoretically comprises of all Japanistani military manpower not under arms already, more then 300 million persons.

Imperial Youth Air Corps

Working with children from 14-24 the Youth Air Corps exists to avoid the mistakes of the last war and ensure the nation has a large supply of trained pilots in reserve, while also feeding the best it can find into active duty. The Air Corps has also been known to fly quasi military surveillance flights besides flight demonstrations, and unofficially to even train children as young as 15 in dive bombing tactics. Even more disturbingly the YAC has been observed flying its An-2 aircraft on crop dusting missions, but the real point of these flights is thought to be chemical warfare training. Several dozen detachments of the YAC are found in school districts across mainland Japanistan

25 x light twin prop transports
100 x light single prop An-2 transports
25 x advanced jet trainers
175 x jet trainers
450 x primary trainers

Young Sea Dragons

Often billed as a sort of ‘navy sports and school’ program, the Young Sea Dragons identifies naval command candidates for the Fukuryu and Fukuryu Reserve, and trains youth in various combat tactics. This including training with explosive motor boats and manned torpedoes. The children are also used to help maintain and upkeep Japanistans expansive but largely unmanned coast artillery arsenal, pulling out weeds, repainting barrels and even counting ammunition stocks. Some criticisms have emerged of the Young Sea Dragons following the drowning deaths of six boys in a single swimming exercise staged during a storm but the organization remains popular in a nation that beloved its once glorious ocean war fleet.

Special Armed Police/Boarder Guards

Working alongside the Army Kempeitai military police and the Tokeitai naval police the Special Armed Police are the primary national level law enforcement and repression tool of Japanistani government. The Special Armed Police have several branches, handling subversion, criminality and other tasks, and offices located throughout Japanistan. Forces range from large riot police regiments to hand picked assassins and individual detective enforcers. As the New Sumatran situation has becoming less conventional SAP presence on the island has been increased dramatically while Army deployments are scaled back. The Boarder Guards are a branch of the SAP but practically amount to a separate service. They guard the sea and land frontiers of Japanistan, and customs checkpoints.
Jointly the SAP and Boarder guards operate a variety of ISR aircraft, light transports, hydrofoils, helicopters and gunboats as large as 4,000 tons with a twin 130mm mount but no missiles heavier then MANPADS and tube fired heavy ATGMs

Yeah, Sea Skimmer actually calculated out a real defense budget and real spending so he ended up with an absolutely enormous army, dwarfing most others. The scary part is, given world GDP, we are in general undermilitarized.

Even if I did expand my army to what I think it should be, it still wouldn't even be remotely half. More like a quarter. Sure I have a bloody big navy compared to his, but he has a huge bomber force and submarine force to offset that, and my bomber force isn't even close to half his. Which was why I went full steam and built up a huge interceptor force and bomber force just to achieve some parity and trained them like bloody mad and been spending 10-15% of GDP just on military alone.

Jeez.. that sure really raised hairs. I really should have increased the army strength a bit more back then.

As we were setting this up, I used that budget stuff to justify my extremely high-tech and top-notch training & kit. But, yeah, I always figured I could expand the military by a considerable amount if I wanted to push it. But I've got such generous social programs! :D

I'd be willing to modify that a bit (not much, maybe just clarify equipment, change a few names, etc). I'd feel a bit leery of using Skimmer's stuff too much because it's kinda fucked up that he leaves the game and then we re-animate his corpse (as it were) to provide us with some plot points and a bogeyman.

That was why I was thinking about replacing established equipment with Cold War French stuff, cull some Navy equipment from places like Central & South America, and get a little more 'traditionally Japanese' with the socio-political outlook.

Given the current world politics, most confrontations would be carrie dout by agents and commandos more so than real combat forces. Japanistan would want to build up as much as possible but couldn't get too squirrelly right now because they want to avoid giving the MESS and CATO something to unite over.
Something about Libertarianism always bothered me. Then one day, I realized what it was:
Libertarian philosophy can be boiled down to the phrase, "Work Will Make You Free."

In Libertarianism, there is no Government, so the Bosses are free to exploit the Workers.
In Communism, there is no Government, so the Workers are free to exploit the Bosses.
So in Libertarianism, man exploits man, but in Communism, its the other way around!
